Treats various types of malaria in the Lingnan region.
Cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂), Realgar (Xionghuang, 雄黄) (each 1 liang, ground into fine powder, processed by water flotation until dry), Acorus tatarinowii root (Guibai, 鬼臼) (0.5 liang, ground into powder), Asafoetida (Awei, 阿魏) (1 fen, soaked in wine and ground again until uniform). Mix with Asafoetida paste to form pills the size of a chicken egg. Store ten pills in a crimson silk bag. Frequently holding them in hand and sniffing prevents miasma from invading the body. When encountering patients with miasma disease, chew and swallow three pills with morning well water; five doses will result in recovery.
Treats nausea caused by miasma, pain in the four limbs, vomiting of sour fluid, loss of appetite, alternating chills and high fever, and thirst after an attack occurs. The regions of Liangguang and Fujian are prone to mountain mist and smoke, as well as toxic vapors accumulated from snakes and insects. Between the seventh and eighth lunar months, when the yellow grass blooms, this illness erupts severely, known as "Yellow芒 Malaria" (Huangmang Zhan) or "Yellow Thatch Malaria" (Huangmao Zhan). Generally, people contract this disease due to irregular eating habits, physical weakness, exposure to smoke and fog, or wading through streams and ravines. It is referred to as "Black Leg Malaria" (Heijiao Zhan), "Toad Malaria" (Hamazhan), or "Mute Malaria" (Yazhan), among other names. All these conditions are treated with the following prescription:
Young leaves of Chinese Toon (Xiangchun, 香椿) (3 liang, soaked in wine and stir-fried), Soil from the south-facing wall (Nanbitu, 南壁土) (from the sun-exposed side), Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草) (roasted), Winter-preserved Tea (Lacha, 腊茶) (each 1 liang).
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Take 4 qian per dose, mixed with wine. For chronic cases, add Kansui Root (Gansui, 甘遂) and Bupleurum Root (Chaihu, 柴胡) (each 0.5 liang). Take on an empty stomach and before bedtime.
Treats mountain mist malaria. The miasma in the southern mountain ranges causes chills and fever to occur at irregular intervals, leading to sallow complexion, swelling, and fullness, as well as numbness and weakness in the four limbs.
Pangolin Scales (Linglijia, 鲮鲤甲) (roasted, 5 pieces), Softshell Turtle Shell (Biejia, 鳖甲) (remove the skirt-like edges, roast with vinegar until yellow), Cuttlefish Bone (Wuzei, 乌贼) (remove the hard shell), Prepared Aconite Root (Fuzi, 附子) (processed until cracked, remove skin and umbilical scar).
Finely chop the ingredients. Soak in 2.5 sheng of wine overnight. Take a small amount slightly before the onset of malaria. Do not interrupt the medication course. Additionally, apply wine to the body. After taking the medicine for a considerable period, food may be consumed.
Treats alternating chills and heat, symptoms that appear and disappear intermittently, and malaria phlegm stagnation causing irregular attacks and remissions that persist without cure.
Dichroa Root (Changshan, 常山) (3 liang), Softshell Turtle Shell (Biejia, 鳖甲) (roasted), Cimicifuga Rhizome (Shengma, 升麻), Cuttlefish Bone (Wuzei, 乌zei) (remove the hard shell), Prepared Aconite Root (Fuzi, 附子) (each 1 liang).
Chop all ingredients. Place in a silk bag and soak in 6 sheng of wine. Warm slightly near fire, turning occasionally, overnight. Take one he-bi (approx. 20ml) per dose. Multiple doses can be taken during an attack. Avoid pork, raw green onions, raw vegetables, and amaranth.
