Treats deficiency of the primordial organ's qi, nocturnal emissions during dreams involving sexual intercourse, and loss of essence.
Yangqishi (Quartzite), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Ruxiang (Olibanum, ground), Qingyan (Halitum, each 1 fen), Bailonggu (Os Draconis, 1 liang; use dense ones, crush them, place in a silk bag, and steam with soybeans for two dou). Huanggoushen (Canis Testis, 2 liang).
Grind the above into fine powder, mix with flour paste boiled in wine to make pills the size of soap seeds. Take two pills per dose, swallowed with warm wine on an empty stomach. Avoid sexual activity.
Treats deficiency and exhaustion of kidney qi, coldness and fatigue in the lower yuan, flaming up of heart fire, thirst with desire to drink water. Or when kidney water fails to control [heart fire], leading to vomiting of phlegm and saliva without coughing, pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions, frequent urination at night, slow and weak chi pulse, dark complexion, as well as deficiency labor and insufficiency, thirst with desire to drink water, heavy and painful waist, difficult urination, ascending attack of Hongxiangjiao (Gouty Arthritis/Foot Qi), excessive urination, women's zhuanbao (cystoptosis/difficulty in urination due to bladder compression), and obstruction of urination; all are treated by this formula. Long-term use strengthens the primordial yang, benefits essence and marrow, and invigorates blood. The spleen dislikes dampness, and the kidney dislikes dryness. Substances such as Liuhuang (Sulfur), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Zhongru (Margarita), and Dansha (Cinnabaris) are all rigid agents. Using them to assist yang and tonify the kidney utilizes what the kidney dislikes. In ancient times, formulas for tonifying the kidney mostly used herbs that nourish kidney yin. Therefore, Zhang Zhongjing's Bawei Yuan (Eight-Ingredient Pill), also known as Zhengbu Shen Jing (Correctly Tonifying the Kidney Meridian), uses Fuzi as an assistant herb to support the spleen's primordial qi.
Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 8 liang), Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus, pitted), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, each 4 liang), BaiFuling (Poria, peeled), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, each 3 liang).
Grind the above into fine powder, mix with refined honey to make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 50 to 70 pills per dose, before meals on an empty stomach, swallowed with warm wine or salted water. Women should swallow with light vinegar water. For yang deficiency and impotence, follow the full prescription dosage. In summer, reduce Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Fuzi by half. In spring and autumn, reduce by one-third. If phlegm is resolved and essence leaks, completely remove Guizhi and Fuzi, and take only Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia). For blood deficiency and yin decline, Shudihuang is the sovereign herb. For seminal emission, Shanzhuyu is the sovereign herb. For variable urine volume, red or yellow urine, Baifuling is the sovereign herb. For dribbling urination, Zexie is the sovereign herb. For heart deficiency and heat in the intestines, accumulation of heart fire, and insufficient heart qi, Mudanpi is the sovereign herb. For dry and rough skin, Ganshanyao (Dried Dioscoreae Rhizoma) is the sovereign herb. Regarding the aforementioned "sovereign" herbs, their dosage refers to that of Shudihuang; if Ganshijadihuang (Raw Rehmanniae Radix) is used as the sovereign, the dosage is the same. One might ask: Taking Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) for a long time can lead to becoming an immortal. Why do some elderly people experience abdominal pain after taking it, while young people develop sores? Or why frequent urination, constipation, blurred vision, or seminal emission? This is because the preparation of Bawei Wan has lost its proper method; it is not the fault of the formula. Currently, market-available Rehmannia is soaked and steamed with Lüfan (Green Vitriol) and Douchi (Fermented Soybeans) to facilitate drying. Since Rehmannia is naturally cool, and vitriol is cold, this causes abdominal pain in the elderly. Fuzi often weighs three to four qian; this is Loulan Cizi (a type of Aconite lateral root), which is extremely hot and toxic, causing sores in the young. Frequent urination occurs because Zexie is raw; urinary retention occurs because Shanzhuyu pits are not removed. The preparation methods for the eight ingredients are listed below.
Dihuang (Raw: remove soil. Those floating in water are Tianhuang (Heaven Yellow), those in the middle are Renhuang (Human Yellow), and those sinking are Dihuang (Earth Yellow). First, steam the Dihuang for a long time. Crush Tianhuang and Renhuang to extract juice, pour the steamed Dihuang into the juice, let it cool, and repeat this process three times. Sun-dry, then soak in wine overnight, steam, and sun-dry again).
Shanyao (Scrape off skin with a bamboo knife, wipe clean with a cloth, slice, and sun-dry).
Fuling (Grind into powder, process by water flotation, skim off fibrous membranes, sun-dry, 2 liang).
Heifuzi (Black Prepared Aconite: tight and solid, weighing 7 qian. Crack open in hot charcoal fire, remove skin and navel).
Mudanpi (Remove heart and coarse bark, soak in wine overnight).
Grind the above into powder. Do not allow contact with copper vessels. With such preparation and combination, who would doubt that one may become immortal upon long-term use! When using for a long time, remove Fuzi and replace it with carefully selected Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus).
