A fourteen-year-old girl had a growth on her soft wrist area, the size of a soybean, half embedded in the flesh, red-purple in color, with severe pain; various medicines were ineffective. A practitioner used four taels of Mercury (Hydrargyrum), rubbed it with a sheet of white paper until softened, and applied the mercury powder to the lesion. The growth fell off naturally after three days, resulting in a cure. (From *Li Lou Guai Zheng Fang*)
My note: Chen Cangqi stated, "For sores and scabies, people often apply Mercury (Hydrargyrum). Its nature is slippery and heavy, penetrating directly into the flesh; one must be cautious. It should not be used for head sores, as fear exists that it may enter the sinews and collaterals, inevitably causing laxity and atrophy of the bones and sinews, which would be incurable by any medicine. Arsenic (Realgar/Orpiment) should also not be used lightly. I record this here to warn people. Unless absolutely necessary, do not use it rashly."
In recent years, there have been epidemic outbreaks of macular eruptions, starting from the head and face and spreading over the body. Within moments, they cover the entire body, resembling burns. The sores contain white pus; upon rupture, new ones appear immediately. Without treatment, death occurs within a few days. After recovery, scars remain for a year before fading. This is caused by malignant toxic qi. It is said that during the reign of Emperor Yuan of Jin, this disease spread from the northwest, named "Barbarian Sore" (Lu Chuang). Decocted Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) with honey should be consumed frequently. Additionally, boil Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) in water, soak cotton in the decoction, and wipe/wash the lesions. (From Ge Hong's *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang*)
Another prescription:
Take good quality honey, massage it evenly over the sores, and frequently wipe the area with Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) decocted in honey.
Within moments, the whole body becomes covered with pustules containing white fluid; this is malignant toxic vapor. In the fourth year of Yonghui during the reign of Emperor Gaozong of Tang, this sore spread eastward from the Western Regions to the interior of China. Boiling Malva leaves and consuming them with garlic can stop the progression. (From Wang Tao's *Wai Tai Mi Yao* of the Tang Dynasty)
If the growth resembles a Chinese pear fruit, exuding fluid and containing stones, pressing it reveals a hardness like a fingernail, and blisters regenerate. If the muscle tissue is exhausted, it becomes incurable. Use five taels each of Sanleng (Sparganii Rhizoma) and Ezhu (Curcumae Rhizoma), ground into powder. Divide into three doses, taken continuously with wine mixed in, until cured. (From Wei Shi's *De Xiao Fang*)
Suddenly, a nodule grows within the flesh, the size of a bean or millet, or like a plum or peach, colored red, black, white, or green. This nodule has a core, and the core has roots; if it corresponds to the heart region, it can rot the sinews and bones. If the toxin enters the zang-fu organs, it causes death. Drinking juice from Avens root (Kui Gen) can mitigate its heat toxicity. (From Yao Sengtan's *Ji Yan Fang*)
According to the *Ben Cao* under the entry for Rumex (Suanmo): "It is suitable to moxa-burn over one hundred cones. Place thin slices of Rumex (Suanmo) leaves around the periphery to prevent further growth. Then, internally administer Avens root (Kui Gen) juice."
