Immediately after the bite, draw a character "Ma" (Horse) on the ground at the site while chanting the sequence of the twelve Earthly Branches: Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai. Each stroke corresponds to one character; start with "Zi" at the first stroke and end with the dot of "Hai" at the final stroke. Then, pick up the soil from beneath that dot and apply it to the affected area for immediate relief. Alternatively, smoke the wound with the fumes from burning straw paper; or mash a single clove of garlic and apply it to the bite; or fumigate with the smoke from burned hair.
Gently untie the constricting rope without cutting it, and do not let the patient lie supine. Straighten the head, slowly flex the limbs, and press firmly against the anus to prevent the escape of Qi. One person pulls the hair to straighten the head, while two others blow air into both ears using reed tubes and continuously massage the chest. Even if respiration has ceased for a long time, frequent blowing and massage can restore life.
If there is slight warmth in the chest, quickly remove wet clothing and wrap the body, avoiding proximity to fire. Use a cloth bag filled with hot-stirred stove ash to rub and massage the heart region. If the ash cools, replace it with fresh hot ash. Once the eyes open, administer warm wine and ginger soup.
Blow a small amount of powdered Gleditsia sinensis (Tamarisk Bean) into the nasal cavity to induce awakening.
Build a charcoal fire and frequently pour aged vinegar onto the flames so the patient inhales the fumes to regain consciousness; alternatively, instill juice of Allium tuberosum (Chinese Chive) into the nose.
Strictly prohibit cold water from touching the body. Coil a grass rope around the umbilicus and have three or four persons urinate into the navel, or alternatively, pour hot water over the umbilicus. After waking, do not drink cold water.
Take one or two grubs (Sericesthis sp.) from a manure pile (also found on old thatched roofs), hold them by their dorsal side to extract yellow fluid, and smear this fluid onto the wound. When numbness is felt and sweat appears on the body, recovery occurs. In critical conditions, drip the yellow fluid into hot wine and ingest it; inducing sweat brings immediate effect.
Remove the black outer shell of the soap nut (Sapindus mukorossi), bake the kernel until cooked, and grind it into powder. Take 2.5 grams per dose, swallowed with plain boiled water on an empty stomach, without interruption.
Olive (Canarium album), Reed rhizome (Imperata cylindrica), and fecal water are all effective. Or, ingest a bowl of sesame oil; vomiting leads to recovery.
Administer tofu whey.
Collect half a cup of condensation water dripping from the pot lid and ingest it to induce awakening.
Chew one cun of length of Glycyrrhiza uralensis root prepared with honey (Prepared Licorice Root) and swallow the juice before eating or drinking. If poisoning by insects causes vomiting, use 120 grams of Prepared Licorice Root, 120 grams of Ginger, and six bowls of water, decoct to obtain two bowls of liquid, and take three times daily.
