Xia Ziyi recorded in *Qi Ji Fang* (Strange Disease Prescriptions): A woman, postpartum with blood stasis rushing upward, suddenly had both nipples protruding, thin as intestines, hanging below the lower abdomen, unbearable pain, life in imminent danger. This condition is named "Ru Xuan" (Breast Suspension). The treatment uses Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) and Danggui Radix (Danggui), one jin each. Half a jin is chopped into pieces, decocted strongly in a clay pot with water, taken frequently in unlimited amounts. Meanwhile, the remaining half jin plus one jin (totaling 1.5 jin) is cut into blocks, burned under the patient's table to generate smoke, which the patient inhales through mouth and nose. If not cured after using this dose, prepare another dose and repeat the method. Additionally, apply one seed of Ricinus Communis Fructus (Bimazi) to the vertex (Dinghui GV20 area); the nipples will naturally retract.
*Qi Bing Fang* records: A man's nipples suddenly swelled, resembling a woman's breasts, extremely painful upon touch. After years of medical treatment with no effect, this is due to toxic qi of the Yangming channel knotting between the breasts. It is not a sore toxin but a phlegm toxin. If it were a sore toxin persisting for long, it would inevitably ulcerate externally; since it has swollen for years without change, how can it not be a phlegm toxin? The therapeutic method should eliminate phlegm and unblock stasis. Decocting and taking Huasheng Tongzhi Tang (Miracle Sage Decoction to Unblock Stagnation) will lead to self-cure. This formula is wonderful because Jinyinhua Flos (Jinyinhua) and Pugongying Herba (Pugongying) enter the Yangming channel directly; assisted by ingredients that clear phlegm and unblock stagnation; Fuzii Radix Preparata (Fuzi) acts as a guiding herb, striking straight in, breaking all hardness. Why worry about the failure to dissipate phlegm knots? Some doubt the use of Fuzi, which is greatly hot, while all pains are attributed to fire, seemingly making it unusable. Little do they know that only Fuzi can penetrate the most solid interior. Moreover, with the sour-cool properties of Zhizi Fructus (Zhizi) and Baishao Radix Alba (Baishao), even its great heat is neutralized to prevent cracking/drying effects.
It also records: Someone suddenly developed sores outside the epigastrium, bowl-sized, splitting into several openings, capable of emitting human-like cries/shouts. This is caused by depression and discomfort allowing malevolent influences to possess. Use Sheng Gancao Radix (Sheng Gancao) three liang, Renshen Radix (Renshen) five qian, Bai Fan (Alumen), Fushen Poria Cum Radix (Fushen), and Jinyinhua Flos (Jinyinhua) each three qian. Decoct in water and take. The shouting stops immediately; two more doses bring cure. Gancao detoxifies; Renshen and Fushen calm the mind; Bai Fan stops the noise; Jinyinhua clears heat-fire, hence efficacy is achieved easily.
*Guai Zheng Fang* records: Someone suddenly became hunchbacked in chest and back, neck gradually shortening. Inquiry revealed it was caused by eating land turtles. Wash the affected area with decoction of Perilla Frutescens Folium (Zisu), then apply Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum Urina (Gui Niao/Guineafowl urine or Turtle urine depending on interpretation, here literal translation used) to cure.
[Shen Yuan's Note]: This condition is what ancients called "Gui Xiong" (Turtle Chest) and "Gui Bei" (Turtle Back). Ancient formulas treated it via the Lung, attributing it to prolonged pathogenic invasion and wheezing. Also, wet nurses often consuming pungent-hot foods leave toxins to the infant, affecting the Lung, causing Lung distension, thus high and full chest/diaphragm like a turtle. Above the chest/diaphragm is the domain of the Lung; the Lung governs skin and hair. If wind-pathogens invade the back and lodge in the spinal bones, the back becomes high and stooped. Alternatively, infants sitting too early can cause this, often resulting in chronic disease. Examining ancient methods, only Baihe Dan (Lily Bulb Pill), Zhike Fangfeng Wan (Aurantii Fructus and Saposhnikoviae Root Pill), and moxibustion on Feishu BL13 and Geshu BL17 acupoints exist, with no other treatments. If the aforementioned symptoms are due to eating land turtles, it is toxin affecting the Lung, causing Lung distension and hunchback. Zisu resolves various fish poisons and unblocks Lung qi; Gui Niao softens cartilage. However, rapid treatment is necessary; if delayed, bone joints harden and cannot be restored.
*Xuan Shi Zhi* records: During the Tianbao era, Li Sheng from Longxi, a commoner selected as Assistant Administrator of Guizhou, upon assuming office, suffered from febrile disease for over ten days. He felt unbearable breast pain. Upon inspection, it was elevated like an abscess. He summoned a doctor to check his pulse. The doctor said: The zang-fu organs have no other suffering; there is an object in the chest attacking the breast with a beak, causing pain and abscess formation, incurable. Over ten days later, the condition worsened. One morning the abscess ruptured, and a pheasant burst out from the left breast and flew away, never to be seen again. That evening, Li Sheng died.
Zhu Danxi treated Wang Zhongyan of Dongyang, who constantly felt a stuffy obstruction in the throat and diaphragm. Every meal required bending forward to pass food down from the diaphragm, accompanied by blockage and slight pain, reducing appetite, with no other discomfort. Zhu observed his pulse: right side very choppy (Se) and Guan position very deep (Chen); left side harmonious. Zhu said: Filthy blood resides at the entrance of the stomach cavity; Qi stagnates transforming into Phlegm. This must be caused by diet; tell me clearly, though you may not realize it yourself. Zhu added: What did you eat excessively last winter? He replied: I drank two or three cups of chopped wine every morning to drive away cold qi. Zhu prescribed a formula: half a cup of Jiucui Juice (Leek Juice) to be sipped slowly, three times a day. After consuming two jin of leeks, he recovered.
A woman, after weeping for her son, developed a palpable mass in the chest like a cup. Appetite decreased, complexion pale yellow and dark/black, extreme fatigue. Pulse was wiry, fine, deficient, and choppy. Evening chills and fever indicated critical condition. Treatment combined tonification and purgation. Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) was modified according to seasons and alternated with Dongyuan Piqi Wan (Dongyuan Mass Pill). Decoction taken before meals, pills after meals. After one month, chills/fever subsided, appetite slightly improved, continuing previous meds. Two months later, sudden night chills/fever until dawn, mass seemed lost. By evening, lower halves of hands and feet swelled, lasting several days. Suddenly night swelling vanished, dawn mass reappeared but smaller. Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) with Baizhu Rhizoma (Baizhu), Jiegeng Radix (Jiegeng), Zhishi Immature Bitter Orange Fructus (Zhishi) administered for half a month, resulting in stability.
Zihe Zheng treated a woman. As a maiden, she had cold accumulation in the epigastrium like an inverted basin, sounding like water when pressed, feeling icy cold to warm hands. Married fifteen years without pregnancy, husband desired divorce. Zihe said: No need. If you use my medicine, illness removed, pregnancy obtained. She agreed. Pulse deep and slow, Chi position surging and strong—this is not a sign of infertility. First, use Sansheng San (Three Holy Powder) to vomit one dou of phlegm; epigastrium became flat and soft. Then took Baizhu Tiaozhong Tang (Baizhu Regulate Middle Decoction), Wuling San (Five-Ling Powder), followed by Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) to harmonize. Within two months, Qi and Blood harmonized; within several months, pregnancy occurred.
Cheng Wenbin treated a pregnant woman, seven months gestation, chest/diaphragm fullness/stuffiness and asthma. Suddenly vomited an object, inch-long, resembling small intestine. Family panicked, suspecting rotten fetus. Cheng diagnosed Cun Kou pulse surging and slippery. Knowing Qi/Blood deficiency and fetal Qi reversing upward, with pre-existing damp-heat in middle jiao generating phlegm, identified vomited matter as phlegm knot. Disease named "Zi Xuan" (Fetal Suspension). Used Zisu Yin (Perilla Infusion) with Huangqin Cortex (Huangqin), Huanglian Rhizoma (Huanglian), Beimu Bulbus (Beimu). Ten doses resulted in cure.
In Yonghui era, monk Weize suffered from dysphagia unable to eat. Instructed disciples: After my death, open my chest/throat to see what is inside. Strangled himself. Disciples obeyed, found an object resembling a two-headed fish, covered in fleshy scales. Placed in bowl, jumping incessantly. Tested with various flavors, all dissolved instantly. A monk placed Dianthus Indigofera Leaf (Dian Lan/Indigo) in bowl; worm circled bowl and dissolved into water in moments. This was actually insect mass (Chong Jia), not dysphagia. Hence later people wrongly used indigo for dysphagia.
Formerly, someone died of abdominal mass (Jia Ji), leaving instructions to open abdomen. Found dry, hard stone-like lump with five-color patterns. People thought it was foreign object, stole it to whittle knife handle. Later, using knife to cut Sanleng Rhizoma (Sparganium), handle turned to water. Realized this substance cures abdominal masses.
Physician Kang Zu suffered from heart fistula for over ten years, multiple holes on chest, continuous blood flow, untreatable by doctors. Advice: Too many holes cause damage; closing them risks diversion; keep one or two as best strategy. Resulted in physical/spiritual exhaustion. Also suffered back pain, stooping when walking, abstaining from alcohol; avoided chicken/fish/crab/clams. Han Ziwen, Prefect of Wenzhou, pitied him, consulted *Sheng Hui Fang* regarding back pain categories (cold/heat), let him choose. Kang Zu said: Old, emaciated, dare not assume heat; treat as cold. Used formula containing Lurong Antler (Deer Horn). After ten days, pain reduced, energy improved. Month later, back straightened, no more pain calls, heart fistula healed. Doctors puzzled. Nine years later, Kang Zu, after term as Vice Prefect of Zhenjiang visited Han Ziwen, energetic, eating freely, health improving daily. Wu Bi, Han's clerk, used same prescription, cured in ten days. Formula: Lurong (hair removed, fried in butter till light yellow), Fuzii Radix Preparata (processed, skin/navel removed), each two liang; Yanhua Salt (Salt Flower) three fen. Powdered, pilled with Jujube Flesh (Za Rou) into thirty pills. One pill daily, empty stomach with wine.
During Tiansheng era, old woman in Minister of Works Zhongsu Gong's house suffered fistula for ten years. Doctor passed, said curable. Took live Eel (Shanyu), inserted five-seven bamboo pins, threw eel on ground, coiled around plate, pinned it, covered wound for long time. Removed, found dozens of white needle-like worms. Put eel in cup, wriggling like thread. Covered again, got more. Repeated 5-6 times. Doctor said: Worms not fully gone, but small ones. Apply common herbs. Used Binglang Areca Seed (Binglang), Huanglian Rhizoma (Huanglian) powdered and applied. Next day, dried Mugwort Folium (Ai Ye) decoction with Bai Fan (Alumen) 2-3 qian washed wound, then applied medicine. Human Qi/Blood cold requires Ai Ye to assist Yang; Ai Ye also kills worms. Repeated twice, flesh regenerated, cured within month. Doctor said: Wound not healing in month implies worms. Worms move, Qi/Blood follows, so wound cannot close quickly; closing traps toxin, caused by worms.
Another person had no sweat elsewhere, only on heart region. More thinking led to more sweat. Disease in Heart-Mind, named "Xin Han" (Heart Sweat). Nourish Heart Blood. Treat with Ai Ye decoction mixed with Fushen Poria Cum Radix powder.
