(Formerly known as Kanji Paste. People know that hundred diseases arise from the Heart, but do not know that they also arise from the Kidney. Drinking alcohol, eating meat, indulging in overeating and sexual intercourse, or acting recklessly with desires damages essence (Jing), causing Kidney Water to be empty and unable to calm Heart Fire. When Heart Fire flares up, it injures Lung Metal, which is severing the source of Water. With the decline of Lung Metal and Kidney Water, Liver Wood cannot be controlled; when Liver Wood becomes excessive, it overacts on Spleen Earth and generates Fire. Fire alone flourishes without generating and transforming, resulting in excess Yang and insufficient Yin, characterized by dry heat that does not last long. ○ The Left Kidney belongs to Water. If the Right Chi pulse is surging or rapid, use this formula to tonify Yin and descend Fire. ○ This formula nourishes Kidney Yin and harmonizes the Five Zang organs; it can be used in conjunction with Lung-Clearing, Stomach-Clearing, and Liver-Clearing pastes.)
Treats men with Yin deficiency and hyperactive Fire. Palpitations, panting, blurred vision, tinnitus, redness of both malar regions, sores in the throat and tongue, night sweats, and nocturnal emission after dreaming. (Nocturnal emission forced by Ministerial Fire; emission without dreaming indicates deficiency of Heart and Kidney. The text mentions a method of applying Chinese Gall to the navel, which can be mixed in.) Lower back pain and spinal soreness. (Caused by Kidney deficiency; some have pain at the tip of the buttocks, indicating Yin deficiency with Fire in the Bladder.) Flaccidity of the legs. (Pain indicates Bi syndrome; lack of pain indicates Wei syndrome. Excessive Fire controls Metal, failing to generate Water, allowing Liver Wood to invade the Middle Jiao (Spleen/Stomach). Bones become soft and sinews lax, resembling paralysis. Ancient treatments used herbs such as Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shudi), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao), Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai), etc., applied as paste to the knees and Zusanli (ST36) acupoint, as Wei syndrome belongs to the Yangming Stomach meridian, supplemented with external application of Wei-specific medicines.) Women with bone-steaming tidal fever. Irregular menstruation or heat and pain in the lower abdomen, and all symptoms of Yin deficiency with Fire. (The Kidney is suited for tonification rather than purging, but excess conditions are treated by purging its child organ, as seen in Baixiang Wan using Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba (Daji). Ministerial Fire should be cleared; treating nocturnal emission with Kansui Radix (Gansui) follows this logic. Some Yin-nourishing formulas also use Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang) and Cinnamomi Cortex (Guigui); the inclusion of Daji and Gansui in this paste derives from this principle.) ○ Apply to the upper chest and back. Apply to the middle of the navel. Apply to the lower Dantian. ○ There is no rapid method to tonify Yin; pastes require prolonged application to show effects, hence fewer herbs are added.
Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum (Gui Ban) (1 jin, preferably black belly; yellow or boiled shells are unusable). Soak in 3 jin of small-grind sesame oil, decoct, remove dregs, and set aside. Can also add Minium (Huangdan) to form the paste.
