*Daquan* states: During pregnancy, if diarrhea occurs with stools that are either green or white, containing undigested food and water, accompanied by abdominal pain and borborygmus (intestinal rumbling), it is called "Dong Xie" (Cavernous Diarrhea). If undigested food and water are present, along with a preference for drinking and vomiting/regurgitation, it is called "Xia Re Xia Li" (Diarrhea with Heat Clinging). In both cases, first use Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) to promote urination, followed by Huanglian Ejiao Tang (Coptis and Donkey-Hide Gelatin Decoction) or Sanhuang Shuai Ai Tang (Three-Yellows and Mugwort Decoction) to soothe and regulate. If the diarrhea is yellow with froth, accompanied by borborygmus, abdominal pain, and a deep, tight, and rapid pulse, use Wuji Wan (Wu-Ji Pill) to harmonize. If there is belching with a rotten odor and anorexia, with a stomach pulse that is deep and tight, use Yinggan Wan (Responsive Pill) to purge, followed by harmonizing the spleen and stomach. If wind-cold causes undigested food and water resembling bean dregs, use Weifeng Tang (Stomach-Wind Decoction). If cold qi causes Yin-coldness below the navel and cavernous diarrhea, use Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) or Zhizhong Tang (Treat the Middle Decoction). If latent summerheat causes irritability, thirst, and watery diarrhea, use Siling San (Four-Ingredient Powder). If dampness injury causes diarrhea with free urination, use Buhuanjin Zhengqi San (Golden-Exchange Upright Qi Powder) or Weiling San (Stomach-Poria Powder). These are the general principles for these four conditions (The following symptoms require careful consideration and proficiency; however, using only eight main formulas with modifications is concise and essential. Among these eight formulas, Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) is modified in five instances, Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment Qi Decoction) is modified in six instances, while Yihuang San (Benefit Yellow Powder), Sishen Wan (Four-Spirit Pill), and Bawei Shenqi Wan (Eight-Ingredient Kidney-Qi Pill) are used either concurrently or exclusively. These applications are precise and appropriate. Once mastery is achieved here, other conditions can be adapted accordingly. Why then worry about the lack of breadth in formulas or efficacy in application?).
Xue Ji stated: For diarrhea caused by rice injury, use Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) with Guya (Valley Sprout). For injury from wheat/noodles, add Maiya (Barley Sprout). For meat injury, add Shanzha (Hawthorn Fruit). If vomiting is present, add Huoxiang (Patchouli Herb) in all cases. If accompanied by alternating chills and fever with vomiting, this indicates Liver Wood insulting Spleen Earth; if Liu Jun Zi Tang with Jiang (Ginger Rhizome) and Gui (Cinnamon Twig) is ineffective, use Qian Yi's Yihuang San (Benefit Yellow Powder). If Yuan Qi (Primal Qi) sinks, causing fever, thirst, and limb fatigue, use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment Qi Decoction). If the diarrhea is yellow, reflecting the true color of Spleen Earth, use Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) with Muxiang (Aucklandia Root) and Rouguo (Nutmeg Seed). If vomiting and anorexia occur with abdominal pain and aversion to cold, this indicates Spleen Earth deficiency and cold; use Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) with Jiang (Ginger Rhizome), Gui (Cinnamon Twig), and Muxiang (Aucklandia Root). If diarrhea occurs at dawn (Wugeng time) with reduced appetite, this indicates Spleen and Kidney deficiency; take Sishen Wan (Four-Spirit Pill) at dawn and Baizhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) during the day. If there is no response, or if the condition recurs after remission, or if appetite remains low, use Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) to tonify Minghuo (Mingmen Fire) to generate Spleen Earth, which is advisable.
