Women suddenly feel sorrowful without cause; this is not possession by spirits nor madness. Who can recognize the symptoms of Zangzao (Visceral Agitation), such as yawning and stretching? This is the Maigan Tang (Wheat and Licorice Decoction) passed down from Changsha (Zhang Zhongjing).
[Discussion]
Women suffering from Zangzao (Visceral Agitation) experience sorrow and a desire to cry, appearing as if possessed by spirits, with frequent yawning and stretching. They should be treated with Gancao Xiaomai Dazao Tang (Licorice, Wheat, and Jujube Decoction). This occurs because Heart Qi deficiency leads to sorrow; sorrow agitates the Heart Qi; when Heart Qi is agitated, the Zong Mai (Master Vessels) are affected, opening the fluid pathways, causing the urge to cry. If severe, it consumes Zong Qi (Gathering Qi), leading to poor circulation of Ying Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi), and the mutual attraction of Yin and Yang results in yawning and stretching. The *Chanbao* states: Joy belongs to Yang and is governed by the Heart; Anger belongs to Yin and is governed by the Liver. Women have a Yin-soft constitution, so they experience joy less often and anger more often. Unremitting sorrow or weeping all belong to the Yin category. These symptoms may seem like spiritual possession, but they are actually caused by unfulfilled desires and excessive thinking that damages the Heart.
[Pulse Diagnosis]
When Essence and Qi congregate in the Lung, sorrow arises. The pulse must be Floating, Choppy, and Short. If it is Surging and Large, it indicates the Lung is being overcome by Fire.
[Formula]
Gancao Xiaomai Dazao Tang (Licorice, Wheat, and Jujube Decoction)
Gancao (Licorice Root, 3 liang)
Xiaomai (Wheat, 1 sheng)
Dazao (Jujube, 10 pieces)
Water (6 sheng)
Boil until reduced to 3 sheng, remove the dregs, and divide into three doses.
Xue Lizhai said: For the aforementioned conditions, some are caused by Cold Water attacking the Heart, while others are due to Wind-Evil affecting the Lung. Treatment requires careful examination; do not rigidly adhere to a single formula.
[Verse]
It is merely because the meridians are affected by Wind-Cold, phlegm knots in the throat making swallowing difficult. If not removed for a long time, it becomes Yige (Dysphagia/Obstruction). Early use of Siqi Po Guan Dan (Four-Seven Coffin-Breaking Pill) is advisable.
[Discussion]
Zhang Zhongjing said: When women feel a foreign body sensation in the throat (like a roasted meat piece), Banxia Houpo Tang (Pinellia and Magnolia Bark Decoction) should be used. Sun Simiao said: A feeling of tightness in the throat, as if there were a piece of roasted meat stuck there, which cannot be spat out or swallowed down, can be cured by holding fresh ginger slices in the mouth for fifty days. Inferring from this, it is likely that Cold has injured the meridians, causing Qi and Blood disharmony, floating stagnation in the throat. Women's Blood aspect is prone to Cold, accumulating Cold Qi, thus presenting this syndrome. I used Po Guan Dan (Coffin-Breaking Pill), frequently dissolving and swallowing it, and successfully treated several cases. The Hou (Throat) is the gate of respiration, emitting Heaven Qi; the Yan (Pharynx) is the passage for swallowing, emitting Earth Qi. Thus, the Hou is the door of breath, and the Yan is the path for food and drink. If internal knotting of worry and thought combines with external invasion of Wind-Cold, Phlegm and Qi obstruct and reverse in the throat, hindering eating and drinking. Over time, this can lead to Fanwei (Regurgitation) or Yige (Dysphagia/Obstruction).
[Pulse Diagnosis]
Floating and Slippery indicates Wind-Phlegm; Deep and Choppy indicates Qi Stagnation; Wiry, Rapid, Tight, and Choppy pulses are ultimately inauspicious.

Zisu (Perilla Leaf, 2 liang)
