Case Records:
One pregnant woman at three months had menstruation come three or five times, but not heavily, with normal diet and spirit. This indicates abundant Blood that the growing fetus consumes, so it stops naturally. It proved true.
One pregnant woman at six months presented with bleeding upon anger, even chills, fever, headache, hypochondriac distension, abdominal pain, vomiting and poor appetite. I stated that chills, fever and headache indicate Liver Fire rushing up; hypochondriac distension and abdominal pain indicate stagnant Liver Qi; vomiting and poor appetite indicate Liver insulting Spleen and Stomach; hematuria indicates Liver Fire and Blood Heat. She was cured with Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) plus Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), charred Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Fuling and Baizhu.
One pregnant woman at six months presented with fatigue, poor appetite and bleeding after exertion. She was cured with Liujunzi Tang plus Danggui, Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Shengma and Chaihu.
One pregnant woman experienced fetal pain every March and April. I treated her with Danggui Dihuang Tang, and she recovered in a few days.
One pregnant woman at three months contracted malaria after anger following meals, vomiting three times consecutively. Two doses of Huoxiang Zhengqi San (Patchouli Correcting Qi Powder) were given, followed by one dose of Antai Yin, resulting in recovery. Later, due to anger, she had excessive phlegm, delirious speech, fever and chest distension, slightly relieved by pressure. This indicated Liver and Spleen Qi stagnation. Jiawei Xiaoyao San plus Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) was used; symptoms retreated significantly after two doses and resolved after four doses.
A woman experienced fever, hypochondriac distension and dysuria upon anger. Her menses lasted over ten days. After conceiving for three months, anger caused recurrence. Morning administration of Jiawei Xiaoyao San and evening administration of Antai Yin, two doses each, brought peace. In the fifth month, anger caused recurrence with heavy bleeding lasting four days. The previous medicines cured her.
One pregnant woman nearing three months presented with vomiting, aversion to food, fatigue and lethargy, signs of morning sickness. Ren Shen Ju Pi Tang (Ginseng and Tangerine Peel Decoction) was used; symptoms improved after two doses. Liujunzi Tang plus Zisu was then used for two doses, bringing stability.
One pregnant woman presented with acid regurgitation, nausea and desire to vomit, indicating food stagnation. She was cured with Liujunzi Tang plus Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), charred Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhike and Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma).
One pregnant woman presented with chills, fever, vomiting, headache, aversion to cold, chest and abdominal distension, loose green stools and frequent hematuria after anger following meals. I advised clearing Liver and strengthening Spleen as the main principle. Disbelieving, she sought only fetal calming and hemostasis, worsening the condition. Upon inquiry, I explained: loose green stools indicate Spleen Earth damaged by diet and insulted by Wood; frequent hematuria indicates Liver Fire blood flowing into the uterus. Six Junzi Tang plus Zhike, Zisu and Zhizi was used for two doses, awakening the Spleen and Stomach. Jiawei Xiaoyao San plus Zisu and Zhike was used for two doses, clearing urine. Dietary regulation led to recovery.
One pregnant woman at five months presented with limb fatigue, tasteless diet, starting with bilateral foot edema spreading to the whole body and face. This indicated Lung and Spleen Qi deficiency. Morning Buzhong Yiqi Tang and evening Liujunzi Tang plus Sugeng cured her. Generally, treat pregnancy without rigid adherence to months; simply treat the meridian symptoms observed.
One pregnant woman presented with clotted hematemesis for four days, hypochondriac distension and pain, and dysuria. Anger caused blood accumulation in the upper jiao, with Fire flaring out. Hypochondriac distension, abdominal pain and dysuria are primary Liver Meridian diseases. Xiao Chaihu Tang combined with Siwu Tang stopped bleeding after four doses. Then Liujunzi Tang and Antai Yin were used for conditioning and peace.
One pregnant woman presented with asthma and profuse phlegm, unresponsive to various medicines. Inquiry revealed chronic leukorrhea and periorbital edema for over two months. This indicated Qi deficiency with Phlegm-Fluids. Liuwei Dihuang Wan ingredients were used for several doses, resulting in recovery.
For women with abundant Qi and Blood, breast distension, lack of nursing, painful distension with chills and fever, stir-fried Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus) 2-3 liang decocted in water cures immediately. Its ability to dissipate Qi and Blood is thus significant. Why is it often used in formulas for weak Spleen and Stomach and indigestion? Some say Maiya best dissipates Kidney essence. For those with deficient Qi and Blood and spontaneous lactation, Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Great Tonics Decoction) is suitable; their offspring are often infertile.
