Chenxiang (3 fen), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 3 qian), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (5 fen), Qizi (Lycii Fructus), Zhuangya (one robust duck). Place the above herbs inside the duck's cavity and boil until thoroughly cooked. Remove the herbs. Consume the duck meat and drink the broth. Continuously consume several ducks, then the body will become strong and vigorous.
After a woman has recently given birth, both blood and qi are injured, and the five zang organs are extremely deficient. The limbs are emaciated, there is shortness of breath and excessive sweating.
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (each 5 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (2 liang). Grind into fine powder. Make pills with honey. Take 3 qian on an empty stomach with rice soup. It can be taken from the time of delivery until one hundred days postpartum.
During the hot summer months, while giving birth and nursing, if a woman takes too much coolness and contracts wind-cold, accumulations form in the abdomen, various diseases arise, leading to near death where all medicines fail. Only the Tao Ren prescription is effective:
Tao Ren (Pruni Persicae Semen) (1200 grains). Remove the skin and tips. Stir-fry together until yellow. Grind into a fine powder. Add good wine (1 dou) containing the Tao Ren powder into a clay bottle. Seal the mouth tightly, and secure it with dough paste. Boil in hot water for one day, until heat vapor escapes from the bottle mouth, which indicates completion. Store for use. Take warm doses occasionally.
The newborn's entire body appears golden-yellow; this is due to maternal heat affecting the fetus. The infant has fever, constipation, refuses breast milk, and cries incessantly. Use Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix) (in equal parts). Both mother and child take them together.
The infant's face color varies between cyan and pale white; this is due to cold contracted in the womb and wind contracted after birth. The four limbs are cold, stool is cyan-black, and the abdomen presents symptoms of Pan Chang (intestine coiling pain). Use Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) stir-fried, Huangqi (Astragali Membranacei Radix) roasted, Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi et Scapulae), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba). Grind all into powder. Take 2 qian each time, mixed with breast milk. After three doses, adjust according to symptoms.
If the infant has white spots on the upper lip, the condition resembles Shanghan (Cold Damage); this is a variation of the disease. Use Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) (remove joints), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) (each 1 qian). Burn to ash, preserving the nature, and grind into powder. Mix with boiling water for administration. If slight sweating occurs after taking the medicine, the body becomes cool and recovers.
([Wu's Note:] For newborns with white spots on the gums or lower lip, pierce them immediately with a silver needle, extract the white rice-like substance, wipe away the foul blood, and rub with Baicao Shuang (Carbonis Herba). This is commonly known as Ma Ya Qi Mi (Horse Tooth Umbilical Rice). If left for a long time, they cannot be pierced; do not swallow the umbilical rice. If it falls into the stomach, it is difficult to save.)
For infant acute or chronic convulsions (Jing Feng), use Da Can E (Bombyx Batryticatus) (one pair) and Da Cong (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) (one stalk). Place one male and one female moth inside the scallion tube, tie both ends, let dry in shade, then burn to ash. Administer mixed with clear soup.
For infant "Goose Palm Wind" (a dermatological condition), use Goose Palm Yellow Skin (as needed), Mian Hua Zi (Gossypii Semen), Hua Jiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium). Pound together. Place under a quilt with a fire pot, and fumigate the affected area with the herbs placed in the fire. Three to five treatments will result in recovery.
