This condition arises from worry, fright, fatigue, and overexertion during childbirth, leading to excessive blood loss. The heart feels restless and uneasy, which is called *Zhengchong* (Palpitations with a sense of constant inner agitation). If there is a state of fear and panic, with a timid heart as if being pursued by someone, it is called *Jingji* (Palpitations due to fright). To treat these two symptoms, one must only harmonize the Spleen and Stomach, nourish Heart Blood, so that the Spirit (*Shen*) becomes settled and Qi tranquilizes. When Qi flows smoothly and the Heart Mind is at peace, the disease will heal.
However, after delivery, if blood stasis clots have not yet dissipated, one should take *Shenghua Tang* (Life-Returning Decoction) to greatly tonify Qi and Blood while moving blood stasis. When Blood becomes abundant and vigorous, *Zhengchong* will settle and *Jingji* will calm; there is no need to add herbs for calming the Spirit and stabilizing the Mind. If these symptoms persist after the pain from blood stasis has ceased, the following prescription is suitable:
Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong Radix), Danggui Root (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 2 qian); Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Zaoren (Ziziphi Spinosomi Semen), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Yuanzhi Rou (Polygalae Radix flesh), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (each 1 qian); Yuanyanrou (Longan Aril) (8 pieces); Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) (each 4 fen). If there is deficiency heat causing vexation, add Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia); if there is phlegm, add Zhuli (Bambusae Sap) and Jiangzhi (Zingiberis Recens Juice). This addresses postpartum Heart Blood unrest and palpitations with unease.
Second Prescription: Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Zaoren (Ziziphi Spinosomi Semen), Baizi Ren (Platycladi Semen) (each 1 qian); Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong Radix), Yuanzhi Rou (Polygalae Radix flesh) (each 8 fen); Danggui Root (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (2 qian); Wuwei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) (10 grains); Renshen (Ginseng Radix) (1.5 qian); Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) (4 fen); Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (2 slices). Decoct and take orally. Concurrently take Anshen Wan (Calming the Spirit Pill).
Third Prescription (Anshen Wan): Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma prepared with wine), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Guishen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix flesh) (each 3 qian); Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) (5 fen). Grind into powder, bind with paste from steamed wheat cake to form pills the size of mung beans. Coat with Zhusha (Cinnabaris, 2 qian). Take 40 pills per dose.
For postpartum bone-steaming fever (deficiency heat feeling as if emanating from the bones), first use Qinggu San (Bone-Clearing Powder) as a decoction. Afterwards, use Baozhen Wan (Truth-Preserving Pill) as a decoction.
Fourth Prescription (Qinggu Wan): Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Wumei (Mume Fructus, pitted, each 2 qian); Pig Spinal Cord (one piece); Pig Gallbladder (one piece); Leek White (Ten roots, each one cun long). The above four medicinal ingredients are ground into powder. The spinal cord, gallbladder, and leeks are mashed together into a paste. Add one cup of Tongbian (Child's Urine), boil into a thick paste, mix with the herbal powder, and form pills the size of mung beans, named Qinggu Wan. Take 30–40 pills per dose, washed down with clear soup. If there is excess heat in the Upper Jiao, take after meals. Both men and women suffering from bone-steaming can take this. However, for the aforementioned symptoms, taking it as a decoction yields faster results.
