Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix, half jin), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Fu Ling (Poria), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, four liang each), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, two liang each), all ground into powder. Take two liang per dose, delivered with water decocted from three slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and one Zao (Jujubae Fructus).
If this syndrome is caused by the binding of Wind-Cold pathogenic factors, use Zi Su Yin (Perilla Decoction) with added Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma); if it belongs to Qi and Blood deficiency, add Ba Zhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction); if it belongs to Middle Qi deficiency, use Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction). If distension and pain occur, use An Tai Yin (Fetus-Calming Decoction) with added Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma); if ineffective after administration, concurrently take Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction).
Wind-Cold pathogens invading due to deficiency causing Qi stagnation result in pain. If lower back pain is severe, it may lead to miscarriage. If injured by external pathogens, use Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis Decoction for Expelling Dampness and Nourishing Liver and Kidney); due to Qi and Blood stagnation and depression, use Zi Su Yin (Perilla Decoction) with added Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Pericarpium); due to labor injuring Yuan Qi (Primal Qi), use Ba Zhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction) with added Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus), E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini), and Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium); due to Spleen and Kidney Yin deficiency, add Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Gu Bu Zhi (Psoraleae Fructus); due to injury by Liver Fire, use Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) with added Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Pericarpium), and Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus); due to Liver and Spleen depression and knotting, use Gui Pi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) with added Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) and Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Pericarpium). Used to treat unbearable lower back pain.
Gu Bu Zhi (Psoraleae Fructus) (baked on a tile until five qian, ground into fine powder), Hu Tao (Walnut Kernel, one piece), chewed and taken with warm wine on an empty stomach, three qian per dose.
Regarding this syndrome, some say that the infant holds a nodule on the umbilical cord in its mouth; because the mother raised her arms high, it protruded, causing crying. Instruct the mother to bend her waist close to the ground, as if picking up an object, and allow the infant to suckle again to stop the crying.
Fine powder from the soil at the front and back of a rat burrow in an empty room, mixed with Mo Xiang (Moschus, 1-2 li), taken with wine, two qian per dose.
Decoct Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and sip the juice. (In the above two formulas, Mo Xiang (Moschus) opens orifices, and Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) is cold in nature; both should be used with discretion.)
Qi Bo stated: For large accumulations and聚 (masses), attack methods may be employed, but cease when the pathogen has diminished by more than half; over-treatment leads to death. Therefore, toxic substances are used cautiously during pregnancy. When there is a pathogenic factor, treatment causes no damage, nor does it harm.
Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma) boiled in vinegar (four liang), Tao Ren (Persicae Semen) (skin and tip removed), Ge Fen (Concha Meretricis) (boiled in vinegar), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (one liang each), ground into powder, formed into pills with wheat paste, and taken orally.
Cough varies according to Wind-Cold, Phlegm-Heat, Deficiency-Consumption, and Asthma. Coughing involves distinctions among the Heart, Liver, Spleen, Kidney, and Lung. Treatment must ascertain the cause and the affected organ; then the cough will cease, and the fetus will naturally be secured.
Lung cough presents with wheezing and audible breath sounds; severe cases involve spitting blood. (The Lung stores Qi and governs respiration, hence wheezing with sound. Reversal of Liver collaterals causes hematemesis/hemoptysis.)
Heart cough presents with heart pain and a sensation of obstruction in the throat as if something were stuck; severe cases involve swollen throat and throat bi-syndrome. (Small Intestine fails to descend Qi.)
Liver cough presents with pain under both hypochondria, so severe that turning is impossible; turning causes fullness under both hypochondria. (Vomiting of water and bile.)
Spleen cough presents with pain under the right hypochondrium, faintly radiating to the shoulder; severe cases make movement impossible, and movement aggravates the cough. (Stomach Qi rebels, vomiting food and intestinal parasites.)
Kidney cough presents with pulling pain in the lower back; severe cases involve coughing up saliva and enuresis. (San Jiao (Triple Burner) abdominal fullness, loss of appetite.)
Treatment for cough caused by Wind-Cold.
