The Liver governs Blood, and the Lung governs Qi. Blood constitutes Ying (Nutritive Qi), and Qi constitutes Wei (Defensive Qi). When Ying and Wei are harmonious, conception will surely occur; if Blood is deficient and Qi is excessive, a fetus cannot form. The Cun (inch) pulse is faint, the Guan (bar) pulse is slippery, and the Chi (cubit) pulse carries a rapid rate. Flowing smoothly and coming and going like a sparrow pecking, this indicates that the pregnant woman's pulse has manifested its form. Do not mistake this for other conditions after several months of pregnancy. If the pulses in all three positions (Cun, Guan, Chi) are equal in floating and sinking levels, and the Chi pulse does not cease when pressed (only when it does not cease is it confirmed), then the fetus is certain. A pulse that is both slippery and scattered indicates a three-month pregnancy (Scattered refers to the Heart pulse appearing at three months, because the Pericardium nourishes the fetus). A pulse that is merely slippery without scattering indicates a five-month pregnancy (The Classics state: "When the Hand Shaoyin pulse moves vigorously in women, she is pregnant." Movement resembles a bean quivering. The Heart governs Blood; when the fetus forms, Blood gathers to protect it, hence the Heart pulse moves. There are cases where there is no movement but pregnancy exists; this is the Foot Shaoyin [Kidney] pulse, not the Hand Shaoyin [Heart]. This is because "movement" indicates vigorous blood and Qi in strong women, while "no movement" indicates deficient blood and Qi in weak women. Yin pulsating and distinct from Yang is called having a child. Left is Yin, Right is Yang; Chi is Yin, Cun is Yang; Sinking is Yin, Floating is Yang. "Pulsating" means the pulse feels obstructed or striking against the fingers, as the fetus generates heat causing the pulse to be forceful. Yin is the residence of the fetus. If a woman frequently suffers from epistaxis and muscle spasms, this is a bodily illness, not pregnancy; if sneezing causes abdominal vibration, this is pregnancy. If a woman's Cun Kou pulse is floating and large, Ying is relatively weak. Floating and large indicate strong Qi, while relative weakness indicates deficient Blood. Solitary Yang exhales alone, Yin cannot inhale; the two energies do not stop. Wei is strong and Ying is weak, accumulating into Yin-cold, while Yang gathers into Heat. Excessive Yang fails to moisten, leading to insufficient meridians. Yin deficiency with Yang hyperactivity results in scanty Blood. She may occasionally suffer from panting, aversion to cold, dry throat, and sweating, or thick and frequent urination, and much salivary foam. This represents severe depletion of Body Fluids and leakage of menstrual blood. Menstruation does not come for three months, named "Ju Jing" (Residing Menses), which is not pregnancy.) All Yang pulses indicate a male, all Yin pulses indicate a female. Distinction between left and right involves taking the Lung and Kidney pulses (Left excess indicates a boy, Right excess indicates a girl, both excess indicates one boy and one girl). A Zong (vertical) pattern on the Left hand pulse produces two sons; a Heng (horizontal) pattern on the Right hand pulse produces two daughters (Husband overcoming Wife is Zong; Wife overcoming Husband is Heng). An Ni (reverse) pulse on the Left hand produces three sons; an excessive pulse on the Right hand produces three daughters (Child overcoming Mother is Ni Qi; Mother overcoming Child is Shun Qi).
Furthermore, male fetuses reside on the left, and female fetuses reside on the right. Where the fetus resides, Qi and Blood gather. The pulse there is slippery, smooth, and vigorous. Therefore, Left pulse excess indicates a male, and Right pulse excess indicates a female. I have observed that when carbuncles and boils erupt on the upper body, the Cun pulse is excessive; when they erupt on the lower body, the Chi pulse is excessive; when they erupt on the left, the Left pulse is excessive; when they erupt on the right, the Right pulse is excessive. From this, I comprehended the principle of fetal residence.
