There are cases of fainting due to excessive blood loss. In such cases, it is appropriate to greatly tonify the blood. There are cases of fainting due to Qi deficiency. In such cases, it is appropriate to greatly tonify Qi. There are cases of fainting caused by Phlegm-Fire surging upward. In such cases, it is appropriate to clear Phlegm and descend Fire.
Blood-dizziness (Xue Yun) is all caused by excessive blood loss. Blood deficiency causes Phlegm to move turbidly upward, resulting in tinnitus sounding like a gong, a deep and minute pulse, and a body cold as if in Jue syndrome (Cold Extremities). If left untreated in this manner, the condition will become stagnant and severe.
Stroke leading to aphasia (inability to speak), or wind pathogens contracted before delivery but not manifesting until postpartum due to lack of proper care, can cause this condition. It may also result from difficult labor combined with exposure to wind-cold, transforming into this syndrome.
Postpartum facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eyes) caused by wind invasion occurs because blood deficiency and Qi weakness invite external pathogens. For a floating pulse, Yu Feng Tang (Wind-Dispelling Decoction) is effective; for a soggy, weak, wiry, or minute pulse, Xu Ming Tang (Restore Life Decoction) should be tailored accordingly.
Jingjie Sui (Strobilanthes Flower, stir-fried) is ground into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, mixed with wine poured over stir-fried black soybeans. Tongbian (Child's Urine) may also be used.
Adding Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) in equal proportion to the above formula, with a small amount of wine decocted and taken, will restore consciousness immediately. This formula, when adding 7 fen of Danggui, is named Jiaojia San (Interlacing Powder).
Renshen (Ginseng), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) (each 1.5 qian), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (1 qian). Take hot on an empty stomach.
Parturients have weak Spleen and Stomach, and exhausted Qi and Blood. Some may develop edema due to contracting wind pathogens.
Retained blood returning to the Spleen causes swelling disasters, brought about by retained food and dampness from pregnancy. This causes residual blood to wander through the meridians, filling the chest which was previously flat. With a deep pulse, Jie San Tang (Resolve Accumulation Decoction) makes regulation easy. Students must remember this clearly and not mistake it for Spleen injury causing water qi.
Zhen Hupo (True Amber), Shishi (Talcum), Fen Gancao (Powdered Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (2 qian, 3 qian, 1.5 qian respectively) are ground into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, sent down with Dengxin Tang (Juncus Decoction).
If the abdomen is full, one should eliminate evil blood. If the abdomen is not full, this is deficiency pain.
Incomplete expulsion of evil blood causes worry and suspicion; the pulse comes fine, tight, deep, and slow. Ju Bao Dan (Treasure Gathering Pill) should be ground and taken with its guide. Mixing with Tongbian (Child's Urine) and wine is most suitable. Heishen San (Black Spirit Powder) with a wiry and tight pulse treats abdominal pain accompanied by Erzhen (Placental Remnants/Mass). Puhuang (Lygodii Spora) should be combined with Wulingzhi (Trogopterori Faeces).
Moyao (Myrrha), Hupo (Amber, separately ground), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis, washed in wine and dried), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (each 1 liang), Dilu (Milky Resin), Chen Sha (Cinnabar), Shexiang (Moschus) (each 1 qian) are made into pills. Take with Tongbian (Child's Urine).
Wulingzhi (Trogopterori Faeces), Puhuang (Lygodii Spora) (each 1 qian) are decocted with vinegar and wine and taken.
