If the gestational period is insufficient, abortion (spontaneous miscarriage) occurs due to labor and injury to Qi and Blood.
Spontaneous miscarriage often arises from coughing; internal exposure to cold or heat pathogens causes the fetus to descend suddenly. Li Dongyuan's Shengju Quansheng Ji (Lifting and Nourishing Complete Life Formula) and Huoming Tang (Life-Saving Decoction) possess miraculous effects that are hard to describe.
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Chuan Gui Dang (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (each 2 qian), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Ben Cao (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma) (each 1.5 qian), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata cum Melle) (each 1 qian), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (2 fen), Man Jing Zi (Vittaginis Fructus) (5 fen), Hong Hua (Carthami Flos) (3 fen). Decoct in water and take hot.
When Qi and Blood are extremely deficient, the fetus descends. It is appropriate only to nourish Qi and harmonize Blood. The waist and abdomen should be kept warm. Treatment should employ Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) or Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Great Tonifying Decoction).
A mass protrudes from the vagina like a handkerchief, commonly known as "Chanmen Tui" (prolapse of the vaginal opening/uterine prolapse). Treatment requires tonifying Qi and employing lifting methods; when turbid Qi descends and clear Qi ascends, the organ will naturally return to its place.
The patient feels stifled and chaotic, on the verge of death; this is postpartum coma.
Postpartum coma results from blood stasis entering the Heart, causing mental confusion and loss of spirit. If the pulse is floating and slippery, Xuming Tang (Continuing Life Decoction) is indicated; if the pulse is wiry, Shizhen San (Seven Treasures Powder) must be used.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Shi Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) (each 2 liang), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Chen Sha (Cinnabar) (each 5 qian), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian). Grind into powder. Take 1 qian each time.
Postpartum vomiting and inability to eat constitute postpartum vomiting syndrome.
Postpartum deficiency allows blood stasis to invade the Spleen, causing vomiting where food is quickly regurgitated. If the pulse is wiry, slow, and mostly fine/thready, Digesting Saint Tang (Di Sheng Tang) yields miraculous efficacy.
Chi Shao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata cum Melle) (each 2 qian), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (roasted dry, 1 qian). Decoct with wine and water, then take.
Postpartum lochia stagnation, with blood stasis wandering through the meridians, leads to asthma, coughing, and chest diaphragm discomfort.
Lung asthma is often caused by blood stasis invading, resulting in shortness of breath and phlegm rales. If the Cun Kou (radial artery at the wrist) pulse is floating and slippery, Shen Su Pili San (Ginseng and Perilla Thunderbolt Powder) brings immediate peace.
Postpartum convulsions of the tendons and vessels in the hands and feet, resembling wind-stroke, indicate blood syncope (Xue Yun).
A wiry pulse indicates tendon malnourishment and blood entering the Liver, accompanied by facial sores, anger, and various ailments. Sometimes blood syncope manifests like wind-stroke; taking Danpi San (Moutan Powder) ensures safety.
Dan Pi (Moutani Cortex), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (equal parts). Grind into powder. Take 1 qian each time, mixed with warm wine or salted water.
During pregnancy, vomiting, aversion to food, and abdominal pain indicate disharmony of fetal Qi, leading to Ezu (morning sickness). Heqi San (Harmonizing Qi Powder) should be used, removing Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos) and Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), taken as one dose.
