Ren Shen (2 qian, add 2 qian for deficiency) Bai Zhu (3 qian) Bai Shao Shen Qu (stir-fried, each 1 qian) Da Fu Pi (washed) Chen Pi (each 4 fen, 5 fen) Gan Cao (3 fen) Chuan Xiong (7 fen). If there is pain in the abdomen or hypochondrium, or painful masses, add Sha Ren (5 fen); if there is severe abdominal pain, add Wu Zhu Yu (1 qian).
After childbirth, if bowel movement is obstructed and one mistakenly takes Rhubarb (Da Huang) and other purgatives, it may lead to abdominal distension and bloating, or unceasing pain from masses in the abdomen.
Chuan Xiong Ren Shen Fu Ling Jiu Shao (each 1 qian) Dang Gui (4 qian) Chen Pi (4 fen) Gan Cao Xiang Fu (each 3 fen) Tao Ren Rong Rong (washed with wine, scales removed, 1.5 qian). If distension is severe, add Ren Shen (2-3 qian); if there is pain from blood stasis masses, administer this decoction followed by San Xiao Wan (Three Eliminations Pill). The above three formulas are generally similar and can be used interchangeably; they all follow the modifications of Dan Xi's formulas, having been treated repeatedly with verified efficacy. However, for conditions caused by the mistaken use of Da Huang, one must take Dang Gui and Ren Shen decoction, reaching a dosage of over half a jin (approx. 500g), before bowel movements become smooth and swelling gradually subsides.
(Treats conditions such as dead blood [blood stasis], food stagnation, and phlegm-fluid retention in women.)
Huang Lian (1 liang 5 qian; of which, 1 liang is stir-fried dry with juice from 4 qian of Wu Zhu Yu, and 5 qian is stir-fried with Yi Zhi Ren until yellow, using only the purified Huang Lian.) [Note by Wu Qian: "Purified" means removing the herbs that were stir-fried together.] Luo Bo Zi (1 liang 5 qian, stir-fried) Chuan Xiong Shan Zhi (stir-fried) Qing Pi San Leng (vinegar-processed) E Zhu (vinegar-processed, each 5 qian) Tao Ren (skin and tip removed, 10 kernels) Xiang Fu (soaked in child's urine and stir-fried, 1 liang) Zha Rou (1 liang). Grind into fine powder, mix evenly, and form pills using steamed wheat dough. Administer with the aforementioned decoction. Take 50-60 pills per dose.
Within seven days after childbirth, if affected by wind-cold causing cough, nasal congestion, heavy voice, and aversion to cold, it is suitable to take Sheng Hua Tang (Postpartum Restoration Decoction) with added Xing Ren (Apricot Seed) and Jie Geng (Platycodon Root). If there is phlegm, add Hua Fen (Trichosanthes Root). Do not use Ma Huang (Ephedra) as it induces sweating. If coughing occurs but blood stasis masses do not hurt, use Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction). If suffering from fire-cough with heavy voice, scanty phlegm, and red face, do not use cooling medicines. Generally, for postpartum women with heat and phlegm-cough, one must wait until half a month after delivery to regulate the condition before using cold-natured medications. Before half a month has passed, postpartum care should still be prioritized. Dan Xi stated that postpartum women should not undergo surface-releasing treatments because of their deficiency. Within seven days after childbirth, affected by wind-cold causing cough, nasal congestion, and heavy voice.
