Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Quanzhongdanggui, 全当归) washed in wine (8 qian), Radix Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong, 川芎) (3 qian), Carbonized Rhizoma Zingiberis (Jiantan, 姜炭) (5 fen in summer, 4 fen otherwise), Honey-fried Radix Glycyrrhizae (Zhigancao, 炙甘草) (5 fen), Semen Persicae (Taoren, 桃仁) (10 grains, peeled and removed of pits).
Take the medicine with a spoon. Store the dregs separately. Wait until three doses are decocted. After taking the first decoction, combine the dregs from all three doses in one place. Decoct again and take. This prescription is the supreme treasure for postpartum care. If a debilitated person presents with critical symptoms, or if there is abortion due to heat syndromes, or excessive labor after childbirth resulting in fever and headache, even if two or three doses have been taken, and pain is slightly relieved but the pain caused by blood stasis remains, it is necessary to administer it again. Postpartum patients do not dislike frequent medication; moreover, for various postpartum conditions, Shenghua Tang (Decoction for Generating New Blood) serves as the principal formula. Others are merely modifications based on specific symptoms. ([Wu's Note:] Drinking hot child urine is best.)
Whenever a mother has just delivered the infant but lacks the strength to expel the placenta, or due to prolonged labor, external cold qi invades, causing blood channels to coagulate and become stagnant, or due to inherent weakness of Qi and Blood during pregnancy, the treatment method is solely to quickly take large doses of Shenghua Tang (Decoction for Generating New Blood) for two or three doses. This will make the blood abundant and the abdomen harmonious. Alternatively, take Yimu Wan (Motherwort Pill) and Lu Jiao Hui (Deer Horn Ash) externally applied as Shen Gao (Miraculous Paste). As for Jikun Wan (Jikun Pill), use it only when absolutely necessary, and only one pill. Medicines like Poxiao (Niter) are harmful to the empty abdomen postpartum and must absolutely not be used.
Herba Leonuri (Yimucao, 益母草) (those with purple flowers, any amount, collected on the Dragon Boat Festival, hung up and dried in the shade in a ventilated place). Pound into powder in a stone mortar. Make pills the size of bullets using honey. Chew raw before taking.
Semen Ricini (Bimaren, 蓖麻仁) (2 liang), Realgar (Xionghuang, 雄黄) (2 qian). Grind into a paste. Apply to the soles of both feet of the postpartum woman. The placenta will drop immediately. Remove this paste quickly after the placenta drops; otherwise, the intestines may prolapse. Take hair from the vertex of the head. Apply this paste to the Baihui point (top of the head). The intestines will retract. Also remove the paste from the top of the head quickly after retraction. Do not misuse it again.
When the placenta does not drop after the baby is born, one must sit and watch carefully, not lie down to sleep. First, cut the umbilical cord. Use a light object to weigh down the end of the cord attached to the placenta. In cold months, help the postpartum woman get into bed and cover her with quilts to warm her. Frequently warm the abdomen with hot clothes. Ensure no wind enters the vaginal opening. And frequently take large doses of Shenghua Tang (Decoction for Generating New Blood).
After the placenta drops, guard against deficiency and fear of syncope due to blood loss. Preheat a steelyard weight until red-hot and throw it into a vinegar bottle. Cover the bottle mouth tightly. Hold the bottle spout towards the nostrils of the postpartum woman and fumigate from a distance with the sour smell to prevent fainting.
After delivery, go to bed. Use a high pillow and backrest. Sit leaning against someone. Do not lie flat. Keep knees upright, not extended. Have someone use warm hands to massage from the heart area downwards one hundred times. Then drink a cup of hot child urine. Close eyes and rest quietly, but do not fall into deep sleep, lest extreme fatigue causes Qi and Blood to rush upwards, leading to syncope.
Warm the abdominal cavity of the postpartum woman with a small garment heated by ironing. Even in summer, the lower body should not be covered with a thin quilt alone. In winter, keep heating the quilt with fire for a long time; otherwise, pain will occur.
If postpartum lochia rushes to the heart causing unconsciousness, quickly chop fresh chives. In winter, use the roots. Place them in a pot with a spout. Pour hot vinegar into it. Seal the pot mouth tightly. Fumigate the nose with the spout to restore consciousness immediately.
Within seven days after childbirth, do not wash the lower part, do not comb hair to avoid straining physical strength, do not rise early to avoid catching wind and cold, do not walk to avoid moving sinews and bones. After seven days, strictly guard against wind entering the birth canal. Within the month, do not speak much or engage in women's work, do not use cold water to wash hands and feet, even warm water should be used sparingly. Avoid fright, avoid anger, avoid overeating. Strictly prohibit sexual intercourse and stirring desire. Even within one hundred and twenty days, do not overstrain the mind. Dietary restrictions after childbirth are more important than during pregnancy. Do not eat heavy, turbid foods because the Spleen and Stomach are greatly deficient and cannot digest them easily, which would stagnate meridians and block Qi and Blood. Do not eat hot-natured foods to keep new blood calm. Do not eat fruits, cool teas, cold water, or cold foods to prevent blood clots from congealing. Do not eat digestive or dispersing foods that damage Qi. Do not drink strong alcohol or eat salty foods excessively, which can dry up breast milk.
Postpartum medication need not be infrequent. If there are no abnormal symptoms, taking Shenghua Tang (Decoction for Generating New Blood) is sufficient. If other symptoms exist, add a few herbs to the Shenghua Tang formula according to the corresponding syndrome. Absolutely do not use formulas from "Baishi Baiwen" (Hundred Questions of the Delivery Room), "Furen Liangfang" (Good Prescriptions for Women), ancient established formulas, or prescriptions from itinerant doctors.
