Menstruation arriving early indicates Heat syndrome. It is appropriate to use cooling medicines to clear the heat. After the heat subsides, deficiency manifests; it is appropriate to use warming medicines to tonify the deficiency. Differentiate between the two and apply them after careful examination. However, if one can take various medicines that nourish blood, benefit blood, and tonify the spleen and stomach, menstruation will naturally resume.
Baishao (Stir-fried with wine), Danggui (Washed with wine), Fuling, Baizhu (Stir-fried with soil), Ejiao (Stir-fried with clam powder, each 2 qian), Zhigancao (Prepared Licorice Root), Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper, stir-fried), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) (each 1 qian), Jiangbanxia (Pinellia prepared with ginger), Renshen (each 0.7 qian), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (0.8 qian), Jiang (3 slices). Decoct in water, take slightly warm before meals. If five-palm heat (heat sensation in palms, soles, and chest) or tidal fever at dusk (worsening of fever between 3-5 PM) occurs, add Hulan (Coptidis Rhizoma variant/Anemarrhenae Rhizoma context dependent, here likely Coptis or similar bitter cold herb, strictly "Hu Lian" refers to Anemarrhenae Rhizoma in some contexts but often Coptis in older texts for heat; WHO term: Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) 0.5 qian. For poor appetite, add Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) and Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus, stir-fried, each 0.5 qian). For headache, add Chuanxiong (0.7 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
Women with amenorrhea (cessation of menstruation) who experience frequent distending pain.
Guiwei (Tail of Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chishao (Red Peony Root), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Yuanhu (Corydalis Rhizoma), Honghua (Carthami Flos), Sumu (Sappan Lignum), Taoren ni (Peach Kernel Paste), Ziwei hua (Bignoniae Flos), Liuji nu (Artemisiae Abrotani Herba) (each 1 qian), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) (each 0.8 qian), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (0.5 qian). Decoct in water and take on an empty stomach.
Women with obstructed menstruation, possibly due to accumulated blood stasis, experiencing frequent abdominal pain that radiates/stabs into the lower abdomen, with hardness and palpable masses.
Liuji nu (2 qian), Guiwei, Chishao, Honghua, Chuanshan jia (Pangolin Scale, stir-fried), Yuanhu, Ezhu (Curcumae Rhizoma, vinegar-stir-fried), Wuyao (Linderae Radix), Danpi (Moutan Cortex, wine-stir-fried), Chuan niuxi (Achyranthes bidentata root washed with wine), Shanleng (Curcuma phaeocaulis rhizome, vinegar-stir-fried, each 1 liang), Chensha (Cinnabar, separately ground) (3 qian), Guangui (Cassia Twig/Cortex Cinnamomi variant, here likely Rougui/Cortex Cinnamomi given dosage/context, text says Guangui which is official cinnamon bark) (3 qian). Grind all into powder. Take 2 qian per dose on an empty stomach, washed down with hot wine. Alternatively, take with mint decoction mixed with vinegar. This formula strongly promotes menstruation and is suitable for blood stagnation. If the symptoms match but one fears taking it, this harms oneself in treating the illness. Only then can it be taken without error.
For women with blood heat causing early menstruation, and those with vigorous qi and phlegm-fire, taking the following formula facilitates pregnancy.
