许学士曰∶崩中多用止血及补血药,不效,以霹雷酒治之。此阳乘于阴,所谓天暑地热,经水沸溢是也。

Zihezi stated: After a woman's Tian Gui (menstrual essence) is exhausted, bleeding should not occur. Blood flows and scatters when heated; this is not a cold syndrome. Female blood flooding often results from extreme grief and weeping, which causes the lung lobes to expand (indicating dispersion of Lung Qi) and the Heart system (the connection between the heart and spirit) to become tense, leading to uncontrolled downward bleeding. The Classics state: "Yin deficiency with Yang pulsation is called flooding." When Yin pulses are deficient and Yang pulses are excessive, rapidity indicates internal collapse, with blood flowing downward. In the world, some treat this as a deficiency-consumption pattern, unaware that this is incorrect; one may administer a large dose of Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction for Detoxification).
Xu Xueshi stated: For treating central flooding, hemostatic and blood-nourishing herbs are commonly used, but if ineffective, Pilei Jiu (Thunderbolt Wine) can be used. This occurs when Yang invades Yin, described as "when the weather is hot and the earth is warm, the menstrual water boils over." The Classics say: In Yin deficiency, the Chi (cun-guan-chi) pulse at the wrist is empty and floating; in Yang pulsation, the Cun pulse is wiry and urgent. This signifies insufficient Yin blood and excess Yang pathogenic factors, resulting in hemorrhage and internal flooding. Use Qixiao Siwu Tang (Miraculous Efficacy Four Substances Decoction) plus Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) and Aye (Mugwort Leaf), adding Huangqin (Scutellaria Root). Physicians say: The Heart governs blood; blood moves rapidly when heated and stops when cooled. Therefore, for leukorrhea or spotting due to heat combined with deficiency, Siwu Tang plus Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) is used. Whenever women contract heat pathogens causing blood vessels to act recklessly, the disease is called Heat Flooding; Yiqi San (Qi-Regulating Powder) with doubled Shengdi Huang (Rehmannia Root) is applied.
Wang Haicang stated: In female blood flooding, the flow surges like a tide, clearly indicating reckless movement due to heat; how can it be treated as a cold syndrome? Treatment should involve clearing heat and tonifying while lifting Qi, avoiding abrupt astringency.
Zihezi stated: Women's menstrual blood ends after seven cycles of seven years (age 49). Sudden heavy bleeding beyond this age is described by the Classics as "Fire governs sudden speed," also caused by sudden joy, anger, worry, urgency, fear, or shock. One must strictly avoid treating it as a cold disease; using harsh hot medicines will cause death. Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction for Detoxification) can be used to clear heat in the Upper Jiao, followed by Lianfang Ke Hui (Lotus Pod Shell Ash) and Zong Hui (Palmae Fructus Ash) to drain dampness from the Lower Jiao. Afterwards, Siwu Tang plus Huyao San (Tincture of Curcuma Longa) is used as a formula to cool blood and harmonize meridians.
Ma Xuantai stated: The Classics say: "Yin deficiency with Yang pulsation is called flooding." Since the Chi pulse is weak, weakness implies blood damage; the Cun pulse beats forcefully, indicating intensified deficiency fire, termed flooding, caused by fire forcing blood to move recklessly. Female blood flooding originates from the Bao Luo (uterine network) and Gong (uterus). As blood has flowed downward for a long time, becoming a habitual pathway, the blood in the primary organ becomes depleted, and blood from the Twelve Meridians leaks through this channel. However, the Bao Luo connects downward to the Kidney and upward to the Heart. Thus, this condition concerns the Heart and Kidney meridians and should present with Yin deficiency and Yang pulsation pulses. Dongyuan (Li Gao) used guiding herbs for the Twelve Meridians to return blood to the meridians, then used blackened (charred) herbs to stop bleeding. If one merely uses charred herbs without first administering herbs to guide blood back to the meridians, the disease will be difficult to cure.
