Pingwei San (Plain Stomach Powder): Treats excessive Qi of the Earth element, leading to irregular menstruation. The *Dasheng Pian* states: Adding Mangxiao (Mirabilite) can expel a dead fetus.
Liu Junzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction): In this formula, Renshen (Ginseng), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Fuling (Poria), and Gancao (Licorice Root) are spleen-tonifying herbs; Chenpi (Tangerine Peel) and Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) are stomach-regulating herbs; since menstrual blood is generated by the spleen and stomach, adding herbs like Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) and Shaoyao (Peony Root) makes it an accurate effective formula for regulating menstruation.
Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction): A general formula for gynecology, commonly used by contemporary practitioners. Its brilliance lies in the single herb Chuanxiong (Szechwan Lovage Rhizome).
Xinding Jiawei Siwu Tang (Newly Revised Modified Four Substances Decoction) (Formula discussion see above).
Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Complete Great Tonifying Decoction) and Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction): Both formulas tonify Qi and Blood simultaneously. Although their medication appears rigid and solid, they are stable and acceptable.
Renshen Yangrong Tang (Ginseng Nourishing Harmony Decoction): Tonifies all five Zang organs, surpassing Bazhen Tang and Shiquan Dabu Tang in level, due to the appropriate balance of heavy and light medications.
Raw Baishao (1.5 qian), Renshen (Ginseng), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart - Xu Lingtai in *Lantai Guidfan* notes: This refers to Cinnamon Twig peeled, not Cinnamon Bark Heart), Huangqi (Astragalus Root), Fuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Zhigancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) (each 1 qian), Yuanzhi (Polygala Root, bone removed, 0.5 qian), Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry, 14 grains), Shudi (Prepared Rehmannia Root, 7.5 qian).
Add three slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and two dates (Hongzao), decoct with water, and take warm.
Si Wutougu Yiluru Wan (Four Cuttlebone and Rubia Pill) (from *Neijing*): Regulates menstruation to facilitate conception; also treats male impotence.
Wutougu (Cuttlebone, 4 liang, remove shell), Luru (Rubia Cordifolia Root, 1 liang).
(Eldest son Wei) Commentary: Make pills from sparrow eggs, size of small beans, take five pills before meals delivered with Abalone Juice. Now adjusted to increase the dose to 2 qian. Later generations use one white-feathered black-boned rooster, remove feathers and entrails, do not touch with water, dry thoroughly. Place Danggui (2 liang) and Chuanxiong (1 liang) inside the chicken's abdomen, add two bowls of wine and one bowl of Tongbian (Child Urine), steam until liquid dries up. Take the clean meat of the chicken, mix with the medicine powder, sun-dry and grind; or add Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome, 4 liang), Chao Fushen (Fried Poria with Stimulus, 1 liang), and Renshen (Ginseng, 1 liang), grind into powder, refine honey to make pills, size of paulownia seeds, take with wine or rice soup.
Didang Tang (Resolute Blood-Expelling Decoction): A potent agent for unblocking blood stasis. (See *Shanghan Lun*).
Taoren Chengqi Tang (Peach Kernel Magnolia Bark Decoction): A mild agent for unblocking blood stasis. (See *Shanghan Lun*).
Can Sha Jiu (Mulberry Leaf Silkworm Excrement Wine): Treats long-term amenorrhea. Commentary: This formula is more stable than the above two.
Can Sha (Mulberry Leaf Silkworm Excrement, 4 liang, stir-fry until half-yellow), Wuhui Jiu (Pure Wine, one pot).
Cook thoroughly over double-boiler method, remove the excrement, drink one cup warm to induce flow.
Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) (Note: Text attributes to *Neijing*, historically inaccurate but translated as such): Regarding the section "Diseases of the Two Yang originate from the Heart and Spleen," this formula aligns well with the classic intent.
Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Fushen (Poria with Stimulus), Renshen (Ginseng), Zhi Baizhu (Honey-fried Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Zaoren (Sour Jujube Seed), Longyanrou (Longan Aril) (each 2 qian), Muxiang (Costus Root), Zhigancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) (each 1 qian). Decoct with water and take.
Gao Gufeng said: For men and women with weak constitutions, regardless of the syndrome, use this formula removing Muxiang, adding Shaoyao (Peony Root), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), and Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry). Taking it for over a month will surely cure. Even if there are other formulas, I know none.
Commentary: The formula relies entirely on the single herb Muxiang. If removed, how can it be called Guipi Tang? If there are alternating chills and fever, add Chaihu (Bupleurum Root) and Shaoyao (Peony Root); if there is tidal fever and bone-steaming heat, add Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex) and Digupi (Phellodendron Bark) and Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit); if arising from depression, add Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb) and Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome); if abdominal pain and amenorrhea, add Taoren (Peach Kernel), Honghua (Carthamus Flower), and Yuanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizome).
Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder): Women are prone to sentimentality and often suffer from melancholy; this formula resolves Liver Qi stagnation, while simultaneously addressing various types of stagnation. Zhao Yangkui stated: All five types of stagnation belong to the Liver. This formula is derived from Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction).
Yueju Wan (Resolve Depression Pill) (from *Danxi*): A general formula for resolving depression. *Yi Silan Yi'an* (Medical Cases of Yi Silan) treated miscellaneous diseases involving cold, heat, deficiency, and excess by varying this formula, achieving frequent success.
Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizume processed with Child Urine), Shanzhi (Gardenia Fruit), Fuxiong (Anji Chuanxiong), Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome), Liushenqu (Six Spirits Mass).
Make pills using steamed dough, take 3 qian per dose, deliver with aged rice soup.
Wenjing Tang (Warm the Menses Decoction): Treats amenorrhea or excessive menstruation, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis that does not stop, or long-term infertility, collectively referred to as leukorrhea.
Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit, 3 liang), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Chuanxiong (Szechwan Lovage Rhizome), Shaoyao (Peony Root), Renshen (Ginseng), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Gancao (Licorice Root) (each 2 liang), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 3 liang, another version 2 liang), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, half sheng, another version 1 sheng), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, 1 sheng).
The above twelve ingredients, decoct with one dou of water, reduce to three sheng, divide into three warm doses.
Also primarily treats cold in the lower abdomen of women, long-term inability to conceive, and delayed menstruation. Song says: Dry mouth, fullness in abdomen, burning palms, thirty-six types of leukorrhea (referring to twelve masses, nine pains, seven harms, five injuries, three chronic conditions, totaling thirty-six types, detailed in *Jinkui Qianzhu*, not repeated here). Danggui, Shaoyao, Ejiao, Chuanxiong each weigh two liang (Quan means scale, weighing two liang each). Guizhi, Renshen, Danpi, Gancao have equal numbers (eight substances used at two liang each). Use Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) fully at one sheng, reducing it by half uses half a sheng. Seek Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) quickly, assist with Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit) and Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) each three liang. Amenorrhea (delayed), Metrorrhagia (excessive), Infertility (cold lower abdomen, long-term failure to conceive) each explore the profound meaning.
(Second son Yuanxi) Commentary: Danggui, Chuanxiong, Shaoyao, Ejiao are Liver herbs; Danpi, Guizhi are Heart herbs; Wuzhuyu is both a Liver and Stomach herb; Banxia is both a Stomach and Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) herb; Maidong, Gancao are Stomach herbs; Renshen tonifies the five Zang organs; Shengjiang promotes the movement of Qi. The disease is in the menstrual blood, because blood is born in the Heart and stored in the Liver; the Chong Mai is the Sea of Blood; the Stomach belongs to Yangming, and the Jueyin Chong Mai attaches to it. However, carefully analyzing the formula's intent, it focuses on Yangming. Wuzhuyu is used up to two liang to drive out cold from the central earth of Yangming; simultaneously, Maidong is used up to one sheng to moisten the dryness of the central earth of Yangming. One cold, one hot, preventing bias, thus it is called "Warming" (Wen). Banxia is used up to half a sheng, Shengjiang up to three liang, because Ginger removes turbidity and stabilizes Stomach Qi, and Pinellia descends rebellion and smooths Stomach Qi. The rest assist each other to achieve its warming function, containing absolutely no blood-breaking herbs. Therefore, it can unblock delayed menses, stop excessive bleeding, and treat infertility due to cold lower abdomen. Its efficacy is miraculous and indescribable!
Liuyun Wan (Six Flavor Pill): "Strengthen the master of Water to control the brightness of Fire."
Guifu Bawei Wan (Cinnamon and Aconite Eight Ingredient Pill): "Enrich the source of Fire to eliminate Yin shadows." These two formulas treat female menstrual diseases. For infertility, add Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome soaked in child urine), Chuanbeimu (Fritillaria Cirrhosa Bulb), and Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) each three liang, Aiye (Mugwort Leaf stir-fried with vinegar) two liang; highly effective.
Danggui Buxue Tang (Angelica Tonify Qi and Blood Decoction): Treats fever due to Blood deficiency, symptoms resembling Baihu Tang syndrome, but distinguished by a pulse that is not surging and long.
Huangqi (Astragalus Root, 1 liang), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis, 3 qian).
Decoct with water and take. You Zaijing in *Jinkui Yi* has Shengdi (Rehmannia Root) 5 qian and Gancao (Licorice Root) 2 qian; I do not know his basis.
Maidong Tang (Ophiopogon Decoction): Treats rebellious Qi due to fire, difficulty in the throat, stopping rebellion and descending Qi.
(Grandson Xin Dian reports) Commentary: Can be borrowed to treat female retrograde menstruation, rebellious Qi, hematemesis, and epistaxis. Because this formula specifically enters the Yangming channel. The Yangming channel prefers downward movement (smooth) and opposes upward movement (rebellious); the Chong and Ren channels attach to Yangming; these three channels govern Blood, so this formula is the correct treatment method. If removing Jingmi (Rice), adding Honey 8 qian, taking the essence of hundred flowers to replenish the lost Stomach Yin, is even more thorough. However, for Yangming rebellion due to deficient fire, this decoction is suitable; for Yangming rebellion due to deficient cold, apart from the warming descent of Wuzhuyu, what path is there to suppress and gather it? Alas! For hematemesis and epistaxis, going against common opinions to exclusively advocate this decoction, probably from Han and Tang dynasties until today, only now is this statement heard.
Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, 4 qian, keep heart), Cooked Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, 2 qian), Dazao (Jujube, 2 pieces), Zhigancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root, 1 qian), Jingmi (Rice, 3.5 qian), Renshen (Ginseng, 1 qian).
All ingredients, decoct with clear water and take.
Xiuyuan (Author referring to himself) lectured with students at the Well-top Thatched Cottage on Mount Song. Someone in the audience mentioned a doctor who boasted of being a famous gynecologist and showed his commonly used formulas for inquiry. I could not help but sigh deeply, saying: Gynecology originally lacks purely excellent books, and doctors in the world need not seek them deeply. However, there are four passed-down commonly used medicines that people do not realize are harmful: First, Danshen (Salvia Miltiorrhiza Root). It is said that Danshen is neither cold nor dry, neither tonifying nor attacking, one herb combining the functions of Siwu Tang, and capable of removing blood stasis and generating new blood. Li Shicai said its ability to remove stasis exceeds its ability to generate blood, making it an essential herb for women. Who knew that *Bencao Jing* says: "Danshen tastes bitter and slightly cold, primarily treating evil Qi in the chest and abdomen, intestinal murmuring like flowing water, cold-heat accumulations, breaking masses and eliminating growths, stopping irritability and fullness, benefiting Qi. Also known as Quechan, grows in valleys." Totaling thirty-eight characters. It says it treats "evil Qi in the chest and abdomen"; the word "evil Qi" refers to the cold-heat Qi mentioned below. Evil Qi in the Heart causes irritability; evil Qi in the abdomen causes fullness. The intestines reside in the abdomen; when evil Qi moves through the intestines, it murmurs softly like flowing water. Accumulations also occur in the abdomen; accumulated and不散 (not dispersing), immovable upon pushing is "Zheng" (mass), Zheng means sign, because it has tangible signs; or gathering and dispersing, movable upon pushing is "Jia" (pseudo-mass), Jia means false, saying it is formed falsely. It says "benefiting Qi"; throughout the chapter, evil Qi in the chest and abdomen is the outline. Once evil Qi is removed, righteous Qi naturally benefits; it is not that Danshen can tonify. Detailed analysis of the classic text shows it primarily drives out evil, specifically interior evil of the chest and abdomen, which is ice and charcoal opposite to the function of Siwu Tang. If used casually as a routine herb for conditioning before pregnancy and postpartum, attacking without fault, major injury to Zang Qi occurs. This is what Mencius called "securing danger and profiting from disaster, rejoicing in loss." This is the first harm of routinely using Danshen in gynecology. Second, Yimucao (Motherwort Herb). It is said Yimucao can unblock vessels, regulate menstruation, remove stasis and generate new blood, being a good herb for women. Who knew that *Bencao Jing* says: "Chongwei Zi (Seeds of Motherwort) taste pungent and slightly warm, primarily brightening eyes and benefiting essence, removing water qi, long-term use lightens the body. Stem treats urticaria and itching, can be made into bath soup. Also known as Yimu, Yiming, Dazha, grows in ponds and marshes." Totaling forty-one characters, not a single word mentioning women's menstruation or childbirth syndromes. It says "slightly warm," deriving from Spring Wood Qi; taste pungent, deriving from Autumn Metal flavor. When Wood is controlled, its nature is gentle; gentle nature brings the effect of lightening the body, as the Classic says wind generates life. It says "brightening eyes," because the Liver opens into the eyes. It says "benefiting essence," because essence is born from the essence of food and drink, first dispersing in the Liver then storing in the Kidney. Stem treating urticaria and itching, because bathing removes wind from the muscle surface. If slight fever on the skin surface after childbirth, it is external slight wind, very suitable for this substance; for severe cases, it is insufficient. Moreover, if the case is severe and the medicine light, the disease progresses daily, eventually deteriorating beyond repair. Those people invite doctors from east and west, possessing other skills of killing without blood; I detest this behavior. This is the second harm of routinely using Yimucao in gynecology. Third, Heshouwu (Polygonum Multiflorum Root). Contemporary doctors believe Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) greatly tonifies Yin and Blood, fearing it cloying the diaphragm and reducing appetite, actually replacing it with Heshouwu. Who knew Heshouwu is not recorded in *Bencao Jing*, but appears in *Kaibao Bencao*, praising its effects greatly, but this is merely a later addition, either showing subjective opinion or hearsay, not worthy of respect. I only occasionally use it for chronic malaria, taking advantage of its astringent taste to arrest malaria; occasionally for chronic dysentery, taking advantage of its bitter taste to firm the intestines. If claiming it can nourish Yin and tonify Kidney, as exaggerated in *Kaibao Bencao*, I do not believe it. Generally, herbs that can moisten must have sufficient lipid fluid; herbs that can tonify must have harmonious Qi and flavor. Ask yourself, how can astringent and obstructive Shouwu nourish? How can bitter and inferior Shouwu tonify? It is exactly opposite to Dihuang, so why claim their functions are identical and interchangeable? This is the third harm of routinely using Heshouwu in gynecology. Fourth, Yujin (Turmeric Tuber). It is said women's diseases often arise from depression, Yujin can resolve various depressions, being a good herb for women. But unaware that this substance is not recorded in *Shennong Bencao Jing*, but appears in *Tang Bencao*. *Tang Bencao* says: "Yujin tastes bitter and cold, primarily treating blood accumulations, descending Qi, generating flesh, stopping bleeding, breaking bad blood, blood strangury, hematuria, metal wounds." Original text only twenty-three characters. It says bitter and cold flavor, meaning Qi is cold and good at descending, flavor is bitter and good at draining. It says blood accumulation, blood not moving becomes accumulation, accumulation not removed becomes bad blood. Blood rebelling upwards, exiting from mouth and nose, becomes epistaxis and hematemesis; blood moving downwards, exiting from stool and urine, painful is blood strangury, painless is hematuria;瘀血 (blood stasis) from metal wounds not removed, blood and water do not stop, cannot generate flesh; this substance primarily treats all these because the pathology originates from accumulated blood, specifically utilizing its great power to break bad blood. Generally, Blood is governed by Qi, and it is labeled "descending Qi," using bitter and cold to greatly drain Qi, thereby greatly breaking Blood, going one step further than other herbs. The words "resolve depression" do not appear in classics, do not be confused by this heresy. If irregular menstruation due to excess closure, it is fine to use this to resolve it. If due to deficiency closure, it is their enemy. Furthermore, diseases arising from depression, as stated in *Neijing* "Diseases of the Two Yang originate from the Heart and Spleen," have profound significance. If mistakenly recognizing this herb as resolving depression and using it frequently, ten cases save not one. As for pregnancy, breaking and attacking are most taboo; this herb should not even touch the lips. Even postpartum, unless there is heat accumulation and stagnant blood, it should not be used lightly. If external pathogens are not cleared, using this to attack internally allows pathogens to sink inward due to deficiency. If both Qi and Blood are deficient, using this to heavily deficit the deficient leads to rootless Qi and Blood sudden collapse. This is the fourth harm of routinely using Yujin in gynecology. The Sacred Classics are clearly reliable; miscellaneous books and theories confusingly mix pearls with fish eyes, which is incomprehensible. Ancients said do not read non-sacred books in the human realm; I deeply appreciate these words! I once researched Shennong making the ochre whip hook, following Six Yin-Yang and Taiyi, outside Five Mountains and Four Rivers, land-generated grass, stone, bone, meat, heart, ash, hair, feather, dry categories, all asked with the whip. Obtaining their curative masters, matching their five flavors, seventy poisons in one day. This is why *Shennong Bencao Jing* is the ancestor of distinguishing medicines. Why do later generations eat the drool of Tang and Song dynasties, or take miscellaneous book attachments and exaggerations, and each family's subjective heretical sayings, actually opposing the Sacred Classics? Such people insult the words of sages; my four-word verdict is: "Mediocre, evil, ugly, inferior," unfit to be a doctor. *Renjing Jing* says one should smash his stele and deface his face; this is indeed not an excessive remark.
