Scrofula (Luo Li) refers to the accumulation of nodules on the sides of the neck, linked together like beads. Some may arise between the chest and hypochondrium; in severe cases, the shape resembles a "horse knife" (long, narrow tumor), and in even more severe cases, they coalesce into a single mass, hard as iron, commonly known as "iron plate," which is invariably fatal. Generally, scrofula often originates around the ears, which is the region of the Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) meridian. Women are prone to melancholy and often suffer from depression; it is advisable to take Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) with added Fumu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Xiakucao (Prunellae Spica), Muli (Ostreae Concha), Gualouzi (Trichosanthis Semen), and Qingpi (Aurantii Fructus Pericarpium Viridis) for regular use. For those with deficiency, Jiawei Guipi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction) is most excellent. It is essential to moxa the Jianjing GB21 acupoints bilaterally, Quchi LI11 bilaterally, Mingmen GV4 unilaterally, Qihai CV6 unilaterally, and Zusanli ST36 bilaterally to eradicate the root cause. Additionally, take one large toad, remove the entrails and clean it, then apply it to the affected area. Use moxa cones the size of soybeans to moxibustion the skin of the toad until the heat penetrates deeply into the lesion, then move to other areas; if the toad's skin becomes charred, replace it with a fresh one. Perform this every three to five days; fumigation treatment three times can lead to a cure. Take Xiao Luo Tang (Eliminate Scrofula Decoction): one Trichosanthis Fructus (Gu Lou), crushed; three qian of Licorice Juice (Gan Cao Zhi); one piece of Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus (Zao Jiao), seeds removed; three qian of Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Da Huang); and one seed of Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus (Wu Wei Zi) for each year of age. Decoct in water and drink orally; recovery occurs upon expulsion of foul matter, otherwise repeat the dose. For regular maintenance, take pills: half jin of prepared Scrophulariae Radix (Xuan Shen), half jin of vinegar-processed Ostreae Concha (Mu Li), and half jin of Chuanbei Mu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus). Grind into powder. Boil two jin of Prunellae Spica (Xia Ku Cao) in flowing water to make half a bowl of paste. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take three qian per dose, twice daily, washed down with warm water. This condition contraindicates surgical incision or application of ulcerating medicines. There is a folk prescription using Antelope Horn (Ling Yang Jiao): scrape into powder using a porcelain plate, or preferably scrape old clear horn/glaze. Add four liang of Fumu (Fritillariae Bulbus) and three liang of Scorpio (Quan Xie) per jin of horn powder. Form into honey pills and take three qian on an empty stomach. Externally, place Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus (Zao Jiao) inside a crucian carp, calcine until preserved nature (cun xing), mix with honey and vinegar, and apply; this is invariably effective.
The Classic states: The nipple belongs to the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian, and the breast belongs to the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. If the breast suddenly becomes swollen and painful, and after several days swells and ulcerates, discharging thick pus until healing occurs upon completion of pus discharge, this is caused by Heat-Toxin in the Liver and Stomach with stagnation of Qi and Blood. It is named Ru Yong (Breast Abscess) and is relatively easy to treat. However, Ru Yan (Breast Cancer/Rock) begins internally with small nodules like chess pieces, without redness or pain. Over time, it gradually enlarges, breaks down, and takes the shape of a ripe pomegranate, with deep internal ulceration and dripping pus, resembling rock, hence the name Ru Yan. This is caused by depression and consolidation in the Spleen and Lungs with depletion of Qi and Blood, making it extremely difficult to treat. In the early stage of Ru Yong, taking Renshen Baidu San (Ginseng Detoxification Powder) or Gualou San (Trichosanthes Powder) with added Hengdongteng (Lonicerae Japonicae Caulis), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Qingjupi (Aurantii Fructus Viridis), Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Honghua (Carthami Flos) externally applied with Xiangfu Bing (Cyperi Cataplasm) will lead to immediate resolution. If suppuration has already occurred, apply Shenxian Taiyi Gao (Immortal Great One Plaster) to absorb the pus, leading to spontaneous healing. In the early stage of Ru Yan, alternating Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) and Jiawei Guipi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction) can also resolve the condition internally. Once the disease is established, even masters like Lu Bian (Lu Yu and Bian Que) would find it difficult to help. One should strictly take the aforementioned formulas to tonify Qi and Blood; although complete recovery may not occur, life can be prolonged. Zhou Zhizhi stated: For hardened Ru Yong or Ru Yan that have not yet ulcerated, mash a live crucian carp with natural Dioscorea Rhizome (Tiansheng Shanyao), add a small amount of Moschus (Shexiang), and apply to the lump. Do not scratch if itching occurs; gently rub through clothing. Apply once every seven days, and it will dissipate as it is applied. Using blood-invigorating and qi-breaking agents accelerates danger. Furthermore, there is a condition called Ru Suo (Nipple Retraction), where the nipple retracts into the flesh, caused by Cold invading the Liver Meridian and constriction of Qi mechanism. It is treated primarily with Danggui Buxue Tang (Danggui Tonifying Blood Decoction) plus Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and Mutong (Akebiae Caulis). Another condition is Ru Xie (Nipple Prolapse), where the nipple hangs down, one or two chi long, caused by Wind-Heat venting from the Liver Meridian. It is treated with Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) plus Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix). Externally, burn Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and Baijian (Paeoniae Radix Rubra? Note: Text says Bai Lian, likely Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata or similar, but literal is Bai Lian) for fumigation. Also, grind forty-nine Castor Seeds (Bimazi) and one fen of Moschus (Shexiang) into a fine paste and apply to the vertex (Dingxin). Wash off immediately when the nipple retracts upward. This is a strange disease, mostly occurring in women who suffer from intense anger; it must be recognized.
Gu Lou San (Trichosanthes Powder)
One Trichosanthis Fructus (Gu Lou), two qian of Ming Rush Xiang (Styrax Resina). Decoct in wine and drink.
Xiang Fu Bing (Cyperi Cataplasm)
Apply for Ru Yong (Breast Abscess) for immediate dissipation; applicable to all carbuncles and swellings.
One liang of finely powdered Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiang Fu), two fen of Moschus (Shexiang).
Grind these two ingredients. Decoct two liang of Taraxaci Herba (Pugongying) in wine, strain, and mix with the medicine. Warm and apply to the affected area.
Shenxian Taiyi Gao (Immortal Great One Plaster)
Treats all carbuncles and sores, whether pus is formed or not; suitable for application.
One liang each of Scrophulariae Radix (Yuan Shen), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui), Rehmanniae Radix (Sheng Di), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chi Shao), and Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Da Huang). Twelve liang of Minium (Huang Dan), fried and sifted.
Boil the above herbs in two jin of Sesame Oil (Ma You) until black. Filter out the dregs. Return the oil to the pot and boil until a drop forms a bead in water. Add twelve liang of Minium (Huang Dan) and boil again. Test hardness in water; adjust consistency. If too soft, add a few qian more Minium.
Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder)
Treats constrained Fire in the Liver Meridian, causing scrofula on the neck, distending pain in the chest and hypochondrium; alternating chills and fever; even Liver Wood generating Wind, causing dizziness and tremors; or teeth grinding and spasms.
The Classic states: "When Wood is constrained, release it." This is correct.
Five qian each of Bupleuri Radix (Chai Hu), Poria (Fu Ling), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Dang Gui), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Tian Sheng Zhu - *Note: Likely Bai Zhu*), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Bai Shao), Moutan Cortex (Mu Dan Pi), and Gardeniae Fructus (Shan Zhi, stir-fried black). Five fen of Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bo He). One slice of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Lao Sheng Jiang). Decoct in clear water.
