Surgical texts have never had good editions, which explains why practitioners in this field only focus on minor techniques such as internal resolution (内消), internal support (内托), internal tonification (内补), moxibustion (艾灸), Shen Zhao therapy (神照), acupuncture and scarification (针砭), encircling medicine fumigation and washing (围药熏洗), incision (开口), and wound closure (收口). Scholars look down upon these practices and do not discuss them, leading to a continuous decline in medical standards. In my youth, when encountering critical and adverse conditions where surgeons were at a loss, I would invariably find a major path to life and manage their recovery, achieving cures in six or seven out of ten cases. This was not due to any other special skill, but rather from comprehending the origin and branch (标本) of the Qi of the Twelve Meridians (Twelve Primary Channels) through the *Treatise on Cold Damage* (*Shanghan Lun*), and applying it flexibly within the framework of three hundred and ninety-seven methods and one hundred and thirteen prescriptions. Now, following the discussion on miscellaneous diseases in gynecology, I append four surgical cases to illustrate the general principles.
Ophthalmic texts categorize seventy-two types of eye diseases, most of which consist of irrelevant stale remarks. Various schools merely elaborate on them, perpetuating the same errors endlessly, with no end in sight. Hence, there is ridicule that "eyes will go blind if not treated by a doctor." However, women's eye diseases differ significantly from men's. Treatment should focus on nourishing Kidney Water (Kidney Yin) to supplement the blood of the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel), Ren Mai (Conception Vessel), Baomen (Uterus), and Xuehai (Sea of Blood), because the eyes can see only when nourished by blood. Furthermore, the Liver opens into the eyes; women are prone to emotional sensitivity and often suffer from depression. Since all five types of stagnation (Five Stagnations: Qi, Blood, Phlegm, Fire, Dampness) belong to the Liver, decoctions for soothing the Liver and resolving stagnation should be used as adjuncts. My two "newly formulated" prescriptions are comprehensive and thorough.
Newly Formulated Divine Prescription for Restoring Sight
*Leonuri Fructus* (Chongweizi, dried between paper) 8 liang; *Scrophulariae Radix* (Yuan Shen, soaked in wine) 8 liang; *Cyperi Rhizoma* (Xiangfu, powdered and mixed with human milk five times) 4 liang; *Bupleuri Radix* (Chaihu, mixed with wine and dried) 4 liang; *Alismatis Rhizoma* (Zexie, mixed with wine and dried); *Saposhnikoviae Radix* (Fangfeng, mixed with *Coptidis Decoctum* juice); *Chrysanthemi Flos* (Bai Juhua) 3 liang.
Grind all ingredients into fine powder, mix with refined honey to make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 3 qian per dose, washed down with Chrysanthemum tea.
Additional Prescription:
*Corni Fructus* (Gouqizi) 1 jin (remove stems; exclude those that are overly dry). Take 10 sheep gallbladders (extract bile). Mix with 10 liang of winter honey and 1 jin of mountain spring water. Soak the Goji berries overnight, then steam for half an incense stick's duration. Dry them, then soak and steam again until the liquid is completely absorbed. Store tightly sealed to prevent air leakage. Swallow 3 qian each morning and evening, washed down with Mulberry Leaf tea.
