[Da Quan] Women may deliver at seven or eight months of pregnancy, at nine or ten months, or even after one, two, or up to four years. Treat each case according to the following methods.
[Lou Quanshan] For those with premature labor urges, use cooling blood and stabilizing the fetus method. For those with overdue pregnancy without labor, use nourishing blood and promoting stagnation resolution method.
[Xue Ji] A pregnant woman at eight months felt the fetus was about to fall as if in labor; lying down provided slight relief, but symptoms worsened in the late afternoon. This was due to deficiency of Qi and Blood. In the morning, she took Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with added Fuling (Poria) and Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome), which resolved the condition immediately. Subsequently, she was regulated and stabilized using Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction).
Jiyan Zhi Mu Wan (Collective Experience Anemopsis Pill) treats pain resembling labor before the due date, and also addresses difficult labor and fetal restlessness.
Zhi Mu (Anem Rhizome) (quantity as needed)
Grind into fine powder, make pills with refined honey the size of a chicken head. Chew and swallow with warm wine, three times daily. Another prescription makes pills the size of a wu zi (Celastrus seed); take twenty pills with gruel drink.
Huai Zi Wan (Sophora Seed Pill) treats pregnancy where the months are not yet full, yet abdominal pain resembles impending labor.
Huai Zi (Sophora Fruit) Huangbo (Phellodendron Bark) (equal parts)
Grind both into fine powder, make pills with honey the size of wu zi. Take twenty pills with warm wine, until pain ceases.
Another prescription: Take Huangbo (Phellodendron Bark) the size of a jujube pit, sift it, and take with well water.
Another prescription: Take dust from roof beams and soot from the stove chimney, grind together into powder, and take one fang cun bi (a measure roughly equal to one square inch) with warm wine on an empty stomach.
[Qian] Treats impending labor before the due date. Crush Changpu root (Acorus Rhizome) to extract juice, one to two sheng, and pour into the throat.
[Luo Qianfu] Prescription for overdue pregnancy without labor: Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) with added Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome), Taoren (Persica Seed), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), Suozhashen (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), and Zisu (Perilla Leaf). Decoct in water and take; delivery will occur.
[Da Quan] When a woman's zang-fu organs are harmonious, her Qi and Blood are abundant, and wind pathogens or demons cannot invade. If Ying and Wei (Defensive and Nutritive Qi) are deficient and damaged, spirit becomes weak, allowing demons or evil spirits to enter the zang organs, presenting like pregnancy; thus it is called "Ghost Fetus" (Gui Tai).
[Xue Ji] The aforementioned syndrome results from Seven Emotions damaging Spleen and Lung, leading to Qi and Blood deficiency, abnormal flow, and disharmony of Chong and Ren vessels. This indicates insufficient Yuan Qi (Original Qi) and excess pathogenic Qi. If menstrual irregularities are observed, regulate and tonify immediately to prevent this syndrome. The treatment principle focuses on tonifying Yuan Qi, assisted by drugs like Xionghuang Wan (Realgar Pill) to dissipate stagnation. If there is Spleen meridian depression with Qi rebellion, use Jiawei Guipi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction) to regulate and tonify. If Spleen deficiency with Blood insufficiency exists, use Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) plus Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizome) and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) to cultivate Qi and Blood. If Liver Fire consumes Blood, use Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) to nourish and suppress. If Liver and Spleen depression with anger exist, use Jiawei Guipi Tang and Xiaoyao San together. If Kidney and Liver are weak, use Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia).
A woman had amenorrhea for eight months, with gradually enlarging abdomen, and complexion alternating between green and yellow. Medications for pregnancy were ineffective. Upon examination, I stated: Green complexion, choppy pulse, and alternating chills and fever indicate Blood disease of the Liver meridian. Yellow complexion, enlarged abdomen, poor appetite, and fatigue indicate Blood disease of the Spleen meridian. This is a syndrome of depression and anger injuring Spleen and Liver, not a pregnancy. The patient did not believe me and continued using Taitai San (Expel Fetus Powder) type medications without effect. I prescribed Jiawei Guipi Tang and Xiaoyao San, each taken for over twenty doses, after which symptoms slightly improved. Desiring rapid effect, she took Tongjing Wan (Unblock Menses Pill) once, resulting in bleeding, faintness, spontaneous sweating, aversion to cold, cold hands and feet, vomiting, and inability to eat. I administered Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Paoshengjiang (Prepared Ginger Rhizome) for two doses, leading to gradual improvement, followed by Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Great Tonification Decoction) for over fifty doses to stabilize her.
Xionghuang Wan (Realgar Pill) treats Ghost Fetus in pregnancy, causing black blood to scatter and discharge with abdominal pain.
Xionghuang (Realgar) (finely ground) Guijiu (Podophylli Peltati Rhizoma et Radix) (remove hairs) Mangcao (Marsdeniae Vine) Dansha (Cinnabaris) (finely ground) Badou (Crotonis Fructus) (remove skin, heart, oil) Tagan (Leporis Hepatatum) (roasted until yellow, half liang each) Xi yi (Geckos) (one piece, roasted yellow) Wugong (Scolopendra) (one strip, roasted yellow)
Grind all into fine powder, make pills with honey the size of wu zi. Take two pills with warm wine on an empty stomach, twice daily. Diarrhea should follow; if not, increase to three pills. Initially clear water is discharged, then countless worms resembling horse tails. In severe cases, snakes, insects, or substances resembling toad eggs, chicken eggs, white paste, or bean soup are discharged, and the disease is cured.
Prescription for women suffering unbearable Ghost Fetus and Qi/Blood stagnation.
Banmao (Mylabris) (remove head, feet, wings, stir-fry) Yanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizoma) (stir-fry, each three qian)
Grind into fine powder, further mill until smooth like flour. Take half qian mixed with warm wine, stop when the fetus is expelled.
Prescription for women who are emaciated, have Ghost Fetus masses, and amenorrhea.
Yuanhua Gen (Genkwa Root) (three liang)
Crush and stir-fry until yellow, grind into fine powder. Take one qian mixed with Tao Ren (Persica Seed) decoction, expecting discharge of foul matter.
[Bu Yi] Treats women with Ghost Fetus feeling like holding a jar.
Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus) Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) Bajitian (Morinda Officinalis Radix) Badou (Crotonis Fructus) (do not remove oil) Yuanhua (Genkae Flos) (vinegar-boiled, two liang)
Grind into powder, make pills with refined honey the size of wu zi. Take seven pills per dose with honey-wine, expelling foul matter leads to cure.
The above prescriptions all contain toxic drugs and should not be used lightly; they are preserved here merely as ancient formulas.
