[Xue] The aforementioned syndrome, if due to damp-heat in the Liver and Spleen, use Shengyang Chushi Tang (Ascending Yang to Drain Dampness Decoction). (Applicable for metrorrhagia.) If due to wind-heat in the Liver and Spleen, use Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free Wanderer Powder). If due to depression and anger in the Liver and Spleen, use Jiawei Guipi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction). If due to Qi deficiency of the Stomach and Spleen, use Qianshi Baizhu San (Qian's Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder). If Spleen Qi sinks, use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction); if due to wind-heat in the Liver channel, use Fangfeng Huangqin Wan (Saposhnikovia and Scutellaria Pill). If wind pathogen invades the intestines and stomach, use Weifeng Tang (Stomach Wind Decoction). There was a pregnant woman who, due to anger, experienced chest and diaphragm discomfort and reduced appetite. After taking herbs for digestion promotion and Qi regulation, her Spleen and Stomach became weaker, appetite further decreased, stools were loose and uncontrolled, and over time she passed yellow watery stool or white mucus. Observing her complexion, it was yellow with hidden white. I said: Yellow indicates Spleen deficiency, white indicates Lung deficiency. In the morning, administer Buzhong Yiqi Tang to raise and tonify Stomach Qi; in the evening, administer Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) to cultivate and tonify Spleen Qi, resulting in recovery.
Daquan Fang treats sudden discharge of yellow fluid like glue or bean curd dregs during pregnancy, accompanied by fetal movement and abdominal pain.
Jingmi (Glutinous Rice, 5 he) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 6 liang)
Boil the above with seven sheng of water, reduce to two sheng, divide into four doses.
Yinzhu Jiu (Silver Ramie Wine) (See previous section on "Fetal Movement Instability").
Another prescription: Use fresh Aiye juice (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) two zhan, Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) one liang, Baimi (White Honey) one liang.
Boil until three-tenths remain, take warm. If fresh Aiye is unavailable, concentrated decoction of dried Aiye may be used. One variation adds Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia). Another uses wine instead of honey.
Mai Jing states: When a woman is six or seven months pregnant, if there is a sudden profuse discharge of more than one dou of watery fluid, the fetus will inevitably tilt and fall; this is because the isolated amniotic fluid descends prematurely out of season. (Fetal leakage involves slow discharge of fluid; here the discharge is sudden and profuse, thus indicating abortion.)
[Da Lun] Fetal shock in pregnancy refers to the condition when pregnancy is nearing term, the fetal spirit is established, but injury occurs due to falling or stumbling, even leading to bleeding and unconsciousness. To verify whether the mother and child are safe, refer to the treatment methods in Chapter Four.
[Xue] I observe: For the aforementioned syndromes, if caused by anger, falling, or convulsions of the limbs, use Gouteng Tang (Uncaria Decoction). (See previous.) If due to Qi stagnation, use Zisu Yin (Perilla Infusion). (Applicable for fetal pressure on the heart.) If due to Spleen and Stomach Qi deficiency, use Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) plus Suzhenggeng (Perillae Caulis). If due to constraint injuring the Spleen, use Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction). If due to depression and anger injuring the Liver and Spleen, use Siqi Tang (Four Seven Decoction - for miscellaneous Qi disorders) plus Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix). If blood loss is excessive, use Foshou San (Buddha's Hand Powder). If ineffective, use Jiao'ai Tang (Gelatin and Mume Leaf Decoction). If Qi and Blood are deficient, use Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) plus Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) and Aye (Mume Leaf).
Cui Shengmiao Foshou San (Miraculous Buddha's Hand Powder for Inducing Labor): Treats women in the fifth or seventh month of pregnancy who suffer trauma from impact, causing fetal distress, or intrauterine fetal death with lochia discharge, incessant pain, trismus, and near syncope. Administer this medicine to test. If the fetus is intact, pain ceases, and both mother and child are safe. If the fetus is damaged, it will be expelled immediately. This formula originates from Xu Wenzhong's Miraculous Formula for Fetal Movement Instability, stating it treats blood rushing to the heart and abdomen with fullness, acting as swiftly as pouring hot water on snow. It also treats pre- and postpartum fever, blood stasis, and abdominal pain. (Also known as Xiong Gui Tang).
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 6 liang) Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 4 liang; Zhang's formula uses equal parts)
Grind into coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose with one large zhan of water, boil until nearly dry, add one large zhan of wine, boil once more, strain, and take warm. If trismus prevents swallowing, force-feed. Repeat after the time it takes to walk five li. No more than three to five doses are needed for delivery. Another source says: This medicine treats excessive blood loss due to fetal injury, metrorrhagia, traumatic wounds, tooth extraction, and fainting. Boil with water and take. If there is prior spotting and abdominal pain, add Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) and Guigui (Cinnamomi Cortex) in half dosage, effective immediately. (See detailed principles of obstetrics and gynecology).
Treats sudden falling, or injury from lifting heavy objects causing labor strain, abdominal pain and heaviness, and intrauterine fetal death not expelled. Three doses cause immediate expulsion.
Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 1 liang)
Grind into fine powder. Mix with hot wine and take one fangcun bi (approx. 2-3 grams), three to four times daily.
Note: Chuanxiong ascends and disperses Qi; there are cases of sudden death after ingestion. If the pulse is floating and strong upon light pressure but empty upon deep pressure, it is contraindicated.
Treats high falls during pregnancy causing abdominal pain, bleeding, and irritability.
Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens, 1 liang) Yimucao (Leonuri Herba, 1 liang) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 0.5 liang) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 0.5 liang)
Cut into pieces. Take 4 qian per dose with one zhan of water and four slices of ginger, boil to six-tenths, strain, and take at any time.
Jiyan treats pregnancy from the second to third month up to the seventh to eighth month, where falling or stumbling causes fetal movement instability, injury, severe lower back and abdominal pain, hallucinations, fetal Qi rushing upward causing shortness of breath, and continuous bleeding.
Gan Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 2 liang) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2 liang) Aiye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium, 2 liang) Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin, 3 liang) Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 3 liang)
Boil with seven sheng of water, reduce to two and a half sheng, divide into three doses. If abdominal pain is severe, add Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex, 3 liang) and Wujia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex, 3 liang). One variation omits Dihuang and includes Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). Another omits Dihuang and uses one spoonful of fresh Jiangjiangzhi (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens Juice), half he of Dihuangzhi (Rehmanniae Radix Juice), and half he of Matong (Equi Stercoris). Boil the medicine, strain, add these juices, boil three more times, and take warm. Another variation includes Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Baifuling (Poria), boiled with water.
[Dandan] Women suffering from sprains or strains injuring the fetus, causing abdominal pain and metrorrhagia.
Guiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Tail, 3 qian) Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 3 qian) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 3 qian) Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 3 qian) Fuling (Poria, 3 qian) Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 3 qian) Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 3 qian) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, processed, 5 fen)
Cut into pieces. Divide into four doses. Boil with three zhan of water to obtain one zhan. Add Suosha mo (Amomi Fructus Rotundus Powder, 1.5 qian) and Chaohei Wulingtai (Trogopteri Dung, stir-fried black, 1 qian).
Zhuru Jiu (Bamboo Sheath Wine): Treats accidental falls causing blood loss and fetal injury pain.
Qingzhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia, 2 he) Haojiu (Good Wine, 1 sheng)
Boil for three to five boils. Divide into three doses. Immediate relief.
Qinjiao Tang (Gentiana Decoction): Treats fetal movement instability due to stiff falls, with umbilical and abdominal pain. (Formula see "Fetal Movement Instability" section.)
Treats accidental injury during pregnancy causing fetal movement instability and unbearable pain. Also treats metrorrhagia, and Zi Mao (also known as Zi Xian/Eclampsia).
Suosha (Amomi Fructus Rotundus, amount unspecified), stir-fry with peel until black. One variation uses the kernel, lightly stir-fried in an ironing pan, ground to fine powder. Take 2 qian mixed with hot wine. Non-drinkers may use rice gruel. Feeling warmth in the abdomen indicates the fetus is stabilized. This formula is miraculous and has proven effective in my frequent use.
Buyi Antai San (Supplemental Fetus-Stabilizing Powder): Treats sudden lower back pain and continuous bleeding.
Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, equal parts) Aiye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium, equal parts) Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, equal parts) Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma, equal parts) Huangqi (Astragali Radix, equal parts) Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin, processed, equal parts) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, equal parts) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, equal parts) Diyü (Sanguisorbae Radix, equal parts)
Cut into pieces. Take 4 qian per dose with five slices of ginger and one jujube. Boil and take warm.
[Xue] If caused by toxic substances, use Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Heidou (Sojae Semen Nigrum), and Danzhuye (Lophatheri Herba). If caused by falling, use Ejiao San (Gelatin Powder). If ineffective, take Zhimu Wan (Anemarrhenae Pill) with decoction. If caused by falling with bleeding and abdominal pain, use Foshou San (Buddha's Hand Powder). If ineffective, take Zhimu Wan (Anemarrhenae Pill) with Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction). If blood loss is excessive, take approximately one jin of Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) with four liang of Yimucuo (Leonuri Herba), boiled in water and taken slowly. If the fetus is dead, expel using Poxiao (Natrii Sulfas) or Pingwei San (Peaceful Stomach Powder).
Quick Method Formula: Treats abortion attempts using toxins where poison rushes to the heart. External signs include trismus, inability to speak, rigid hands clenched low, spontaneous sweating, and slight fever. Externally similar to stroke, but the pulse is floating and soft. Ten deaths for one survival; doctors often fail to recognize it. Treating it as stroke will surely lead to death. Use 2 liang of Baibiandou (Dolichos Lablab Seed), raw, peeled and powdered. Mix with fresh well water and take for immediate effect.
Ejiao San (Gelatin Powder): Treats fetal movement instability, lower back pain, abdominal fullness, vaginal discharge, or fetal Qi rushing to the heart causing shortness of breath and fatigue, regardless of gestational age, whether due to falling or toxins. (Formula see previous "Fetal Movement Instability" section.)
Formula for treating fetal movement instability caused by accidental ingestion of various drug poisons during pregnancy.
Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, equal parts) Heidou (Sojae Semen Nigrum, equal parts) Danzhuye (Lophatheri Herba, equal parts).
Concentrate and decoct, drink the juice.
Duoming Wan (Life-Seizing Pill): Treats miscarriage with excessive bleeding, intrauterine fetal death, aversion to cold, cyanosis of fingers, lips, and nails, sallow-black complexion. If fetal Qi rushes to the heart, suffocation and near-death occur with cold sweats, panting, fullness, and anorexia. Or if poisonous food/herbs are ingested, damaging fetal Qi, causing continuous bleeding. If the fetus is not yet damaged, it can stabilize; if dead, it can expel. If the fetus is rotting in the uterus critically, it can be extracted immediately. This formula was transmitted by a strange person and is extremely subtle. (This is essentially Zhang Zhongjing's Fuling Guizhi Wan [Poria and Cinnamon Twig Pill], but taken chewed with light vinegar soup. The formula consists of Mudanpi [Moutan Cortex], Fuling [Poria], Guizhi [Cinnamomi Ramulus], Tao Ren [Persicae Semen], and Chi Shaoyao [Paeoniae Radix Rubra] in equal parts. Danyang also praises its efficacy.)
