Xu Zhicai, a renowned physician of the Northern Qi Dynasty, stated: In the first month of pregnancy, it is called "Shi Pei" (Initial Embryo). The diet should be refined and well-cooked, with flavors favoring sour and delicious. Barley (*Hordeum vulgare*) is suitable for consumption, while fishy and pungent/spicy foods should be avoided. This is referred to as "Cai Zheng" (Regulation by Talent). During the first month of pregnancy, the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian nourishes the fetus, and acupuncture or moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided. (Acupoints such as Dadun [LR1], Xingjian [LR2], Taichong [LR3], Zhongfeng [LR4], Wuli [LR10], and Zhongdu [LR6] are examples.) The Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian internally connects to the Liver, which governs the sinews and blood. In the first month, the flow of blood and qi is somewhat stagnant; one should avoid strenuous labor, sleep in tranquility, and avoid fear or fright.
In the first month of pregnancy, Yin and Yang newly combine to form the fetus. If Cold predominates, pain occurs; if Heat predominates, sudden fright ensues. Lifting heavy objects may cause lower back pain, abdominal distension, and uterine urgency. If there is sudden vaginal bleeding, preventive measures for calming the fetus should be taken. The appropriate prescription is Wu Ci Ji Tang (Black Hen Decoction).
Wu Ci Ji Tang (Black Hen Decoction)
Wu Ci Ji (Black Hen, one whole chicken, prepared according to culinary methods) Poria (*Poria cocos*) E'jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) (each 2 liang) Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit) (1 sheng) Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber) (5 he, hearts removed) Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) Bai Shao (White Peony Root) Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) (each 3 liang) Gan Cao (Licorice Root) Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) (each 1 liang)
Chop all ingredients. Boil the chicken in 12 sheng of water until the liquid reduces to 6 sheng. Remove the chicken and dregs. Further decoct the liquid to obtain 3 sheng. Add 3 sheng of wine and dissolve the E'jiao completely. The final volume should be 3 sheng. Take warm, 1 sheng per dose, three times daily.
Bu Tai Tang (Fetus-Nourishing Decoction) If the fetus was previously injured in the first month, this formula should be taken preventively.
Xi Xin (Asarum Root) (1 liang) Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root) (2 liang) Gan Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) (each 3 liang) Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) (4 liang) Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit) Da Mai (Barley Grain) (each 5 he) Wu Mei (Mume Fruit) (1 sheng)
Chop the eight ingredients. Boil in 7 sheng of water until reduced to 2.5 sheng. Divide into three doses. Take before meals. If Cold predominates, double the dosage of Xi Xin and Wu Zhu Yu. If Heat predominates with thirst, remove these and add Gua Lou Gen (Trichosanthes Root) 2 liang. If there is excessive mental preoccupation, remove Da Mai and add Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed) 3 he. Another version includes Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) 1 liang.
In the second month of pregnancy, it is called "Shi Gao" (Initial Paste). Avoid pungent and fishy foods. Reside in quiet places. Men should avoid exertion. The joints ache throughout the body, indicating that the fetal essence is beginning to coalesce. During the second month, the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian nourishes the fetus, and acupuncture or moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided. (Acupoints such as Dan Qiao, Qiuxu [GB40], Fuyang [GB38], Jiegu [GB39], Wailai, and Yanglingquan [GB34] are examples.) The Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian internally connects to the Gallbladder, which governs the essence. In the second month, the fetal essence forms in the uterus; care must be taken to prevent disturbance or fright.
In the second month, Yin and Yang energies begin to gather in the meridians. If Cold predominates, the fetus may fail to develop properly; if Heat predominates, the fetus may wither. Exposure to Wind-Cold may cause fetal instability, chest fullness, umbilical urgency, stiff back, and sudden bleeding accompanied by alternating chills and fever. The appropriate prescription is Ai Ye Tang (Mugwort Leaf Decoction).
Ai Ye Tang (Mugwort Leaf Decoction)
Ai Ye (Mugwort Leaf) Dan Shen (Salvia Root) Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis) Ma Huang (Ephedra Stem) (each 2 liang) Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) E'jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) (each 3 liang) Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (1 liang) Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) (6 liang) Da Zao (Jujube Fruit) (12 pieces)
Chop the nine ingredients. Boil in 3 sheng of wine and 1 dou of water until reduced by half. Strain and add E'jiao. Decoct to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into three doses. Another version uses one fat black hen, prepared culinarily. Cut off the head, collect the blood, and mix with 3 sheng of wine. Add 1.2 dou of water, boil to extract juice, remove the chicken, add the herbs, decoct to 3 sheng, then add the blood, wine, and gelatin. Decoct to 3 sheng. Divide into three warm doses.
Huang Lian Tang (Coptis Decoction) If the fetus was previously injured in the second month, this formula should be taken preventively.
Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) (each 1 liang) Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit) (5 he) Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) (3 liang) Sheng Di Huang (Raw Rehmannia Root) (5 liang; another version uses E'jiao)
Chop the five ingredients. Boil in 7 sheng of vinegar juice until reduced to 3 sheng. Divide into four doses. Take three times during the day and once at night. Reprepare every ten days. If significant discomfort is felt, add Wu Mei (Mume Fruit) 1 sheng. When adding Wu Mei, use plain water instead of vinegar juice. Another version includes Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis) 0.5 liang.
In the third month of pregnancy, it is called "Shi Tai" (Initial Fetus). At this time, the form is not yet fixed, and external impressions influence development. To conceive a boy, handle bows and arrows; to conceive a girl, play with beads. To have a beautiful child, gaze frequently at jade stones. To have a virtuous child, sit upright in purity and emptiness. This is known as "external image affecting internal sensation." During the third month, the Hand Jueyin Pericardium Meridian nourishes the fetus, and acupuncture or moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided. (Acupoints such as Zhongchong [PC9], Laogong [PC8], Daling [PC7], Neiguan [PC6], Jianshi [PC5], Ximen [PC4], and Quze [PC3] are examples.) The Hand Jueyin Pericardium Meridian internally connects to the Heart. One should avoid sorrow, overthinking, and fright.
The third month is when the fetus takes shape. If Cold predominates, stools may turn green; if Heat predominates, urination becomes difficult, urine being either red or yellow. Sudden fright, worry, or anger may cause falling or stumbling, disturbing the meridians, leading to abdominal distension, severe periumbilical pain, or sudden lower back bleeding. The appropriate prescription is Xiong Ji Tang (Male Chicken Decoction).
Xiong Ji Tang (Male Chicken Decoction)
Xiong Ji (Male Chicken, one whole chicken, prepared according to culinary methods) Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root) Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) (each 1 liang) Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber) (5 he) Bai Shao (White Peony Root) Da Zao (Jujube Fruit) (12 pieces, broken) Gan Cao (Licorice Root) Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) Fu Ling (Poria) E'jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) (each 2 liang)
Chop all ingredients. Boil the chicken in 1.3 dou of water until reduced by half. Remove the chicken, add the herbs, and decoct until reduced by half again. Add 3 sheng of clear wine and gelatin. Decoct to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into three doses. Consume within one day. Rest in warmth afterwards. Another version uses Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis) and Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome) each 2 liang, omitting Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root) and Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger).
Fu Shen Tang (Poria with Heartwood Decoction) For those who previously injured the fetus in the third month, take this formula preventively.
Fu Shen (Poria with Pine Root) Dan Shen (Salvia Root) Long Gu (Fossilized Bone) (each 1 liang) E'jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis) Gan Cao (Licorice Root) Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) (each 2 liang) Da Zao (Jujube Fruit) (21 pieces, broken) Chi Xiao Dou (Red Bean) (200 grains)
Chop the nine ingredients. Boil in 1 dou of vinegar juice until reduced to 3 sheng. Divide into four doses. Take before meals. After seven days, administer one dose. For lower back pain, add Sang Ji Sheng (Taxillus Branch) 2 liang. (*Shen Shi Fang* includes Xie Bai (Allium Macrostemon Bulb) 2 liang and Ma Zi (Hemp Seed) 1 sheng.)
[Zhu Danxi] A woman invariably miscarried around the third month of pregnancy. Her pulse was large and weak on the left hand, and choppy upon deep pressure, indicating blood deficiency. Since she was young, only Middle Qi was tonified to allow blood to flourish naturally. It was early summer, so she was instructed to take 1 qian of Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root) powder with strong decoction of Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) tea, taking dozens of doses, resulting in a successful delivery. Reflecting on this, miscarriages due to Heat and Deficiency are common. Heat and Deficiency must be differentiated by severity. By the third month, Ministerial Fire ascends, making miscarriage likely. Hence, Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), cooked Ai Ye (Mugwort Leaf), and E'jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) are excellent fetuses-calming herbs.
Method for verifying pregnancy after three months of amenorrhea: Grind Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome) into fine powder. Take one spoonful with strong decoction on an empty stomach. Slight movement in the abdomen indicates pregnancy.
In the fourth month of pregnancy, the fetus begins to receive the Essence of Water to form blood vessels. Diet should include rice and glutinous rice; soups should include fish and wild goose. This nourishes Blood and Qi to open the senses and circulate through the meridians.
During the fourth month, the Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian nourishes the fetus, and acupuncture or moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided. (Acupoints such as Guanchong [TE1], Yangchi [TE4], Neiguan [PC6 - *Note: Text error in source, likely meant TE acupoints like Waiguan*], Sanyangjiao, Tianjing [TE10], and Qu Yuan are examples.) The Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian internally connects to the Sanjiao (Triple Burner). In the fourth month, the six Fu Organs are formed in sequence. The body should remain still, the mind harmonious, and diet moderated.
In the fourth month, if Cold predominates, there is epigastric unease with nausea, chest fullness, and loss of appetite. If Heat predominates, urination is difficult and frequent, resembling strangury, with urgency below the umbilicus. Sudden exposure to Wind-Cold causes stiff neck, chills, and fever. Disturbance may cause body agitation, lumbar/back/abdominal discomfort, intermittent symptoms, fetal pressure on the chest, irritability, and sudden bleeding. The appropriate prescription is Ju Hua Tang (Chrysanthemum Decoction).
Ju Hua Tang (Chrysanthemum Decoction)
Ju Hua (Chrysanthemum Flower) (egg-sized, one piece) Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber) (1 sheng) Da Zao (Jujube Fruit) (12 pieces) Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) (1.5 liang) Gan Cao (Licorice Root) Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis) (each 2 liang) Ma Huang (Ephedra Stem) E'jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) (each 3 liang) Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber) (4 liang) Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) (5 liang)
Chop the ten ingredients. Boil in 8 sheng of water until reduced by half. Add 3 sheng of clear wine and E'jiao. Decoct to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into three doses. Rest in warmth; sweating is expected. Apply powder to the body and protect against Wind-Cold for four to five days. Another version uses one black hen, boiling its juice to decoct the herbs.
Tiao Zhong Tang (Middle-Regulating Decoction) If the fetus was previously injured in the fourth month, take this formula preventively.
Bai Shao Yao (White Peony Root) Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) (each 4 liang) Hou Po (Magnolia Bark) Li Gen Bai Pi (Li Root White Bark) Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange) Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root) (each 3 liang) Xu Duan (Dipsacus Root) Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome) Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (each 1 liang) Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis) (1.5 liang) Wu Mei (Mume Fruit) (1 sheng)
Chop the twelve ingredients. Boil in 1 dou of water until reduced to 3 sheng. Divide into four doses. Take three times during the day and once at night. After eight days, administer another dose.
In the fifth month of pregnancy, the fetus begins to receive the Essence of Fire to form its Qi. Sleep late, bathe, wash clothes, reside in deep quarters, wear thick clothes, absorb morning sunlight to avoid cold disasters. Eat rice and wheat; eat beef and mutton soups; season with Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit) and Five Flavors. This nourishes Qi to stabilize the Zang Organs.
During the fifth month, the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian nourishes the fetus, and acupuncture or moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided. (Acupoints such as Yinbai [SP1], Dada [SP2], Gong Sun [SP4], Shangqiu [SP5], Sanyinjiao [SP6], Lougu [SP9], and Yinlingquan [SP9] are examples.)
