[Da] Women suffering from dian-kuang disorder (a category of mental disorders characterized by mania or melancholia) are afflicted due to deficiency and weakness of Qi and Blood, combined with the invasion of Wind pathogen. Humans are born endowing Yin and Yang Qi. When Wind pathogen enters and merges with Yin, it manifests as Dian (melancholic psychosis); when it enters and merges with Yang, it manifests as Kuang (manic psychosis). Yin and Yang have states of deficiency and excess. When the body is deficient, the pathogen combines with the deficiency, triggering an attack. Dian attacks suddenly; the patient feels unhappy, stares straight ahead, collapses, foams at the mouth, experiences spasms of the mouth and eyes, tortuous twisting of the limbs, and loses consciousness. After a long time, they recover. Kuang is characterized by little sleep, lack of hunger, arrogance regarding one's virtue, wisdom, and status, unprovoked laughter, fondness for singing and music, continuous erratic behavior. Hence, it is called dian-kuang. The *Suwen* states: "For manic rage due to Yang Jue (rebellious Qi), drink Iron Dust Decoction." Manic rage originates from the Liver Meridian. The Liver belongs to Wood, while Iron Dust belongs to Metal; this represents the principle of using Metal to control Wood. I once treated a woman who saw ghosts and objects, spoke abnormally, picked at her clothes, and stared straight ahead. Many physicians used sedative herbs without effect. I prescribed Yangzheng Dan (Nourish Righteousness Pill) twice, taken with Frankincense Decoction, assisted by Sansheng Yin (Three Lives Decoction), resulting in immediate recovery. Another male patient suffered from the same condition and also recovered with this prescription. Moreover, Yangzheng Dan is identical to Baodan Wan (Guard the Gallbladder Pill) from *Baiyi Fang*, except that Baodan Wan contains no Realgar but instead contains Frankincense.
[Xue] Mr. Liu Zongnong stated: Some patients suffer fright in the womb, or contract the disease after hearing a sudden loud shock. Fright causes the Spirit (Shen) to lose its residence; when the residence is empty, Phlegm-Drool gathers there. Alternatively, irregular diet damages Stomach Qi, causing Phlegm to stagnate in the chest and diaphragm, leading to illness. One must identify Fire pathogens, identify Phlegm, and consolidate Yuan Qi. If stubborn Phlegm is firmly lodged in the upper diaphragm, emesis must be induced first; if in the intestines and stomach, purgation is required. I believe that if this disorder arises from deficiency of Yuan Qi, or Phlegm-heat causing fever, these are all deficiency patterns. Similar to Slow Convulsion Disorder, there is no Wind to dispel and no Phlegm to purge; one should only tonify the Spleen and Stomach. As Sheng Qi becomes robust, Shen will naturally clear, and Phlegm-Drool will transform. If mistakenly treated with acrid-dispersing agents containing Camphor and Musk, it will inevitably lead to a deteriorating condition. A woman of ascetic habits contracted Dian due to fright. Treatment with Wind-Phlegm dispersing herbs worsened her condition. I used dense decoctions of Ginseng, Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, Angelica Sinensis Radix, and Poria Cocos, assisted by Ginger Juice and Bamboo Sap. After consuming over three jin, she recovered.
