For the condition of postpartum visceral deficiency leading to fright and palpitations, it arises from physical weakness and insufficiency of Heart Qi, where the Heart Meridian is invaded by Wind pathogenic factors. It may also result from fear or distress, causing Heart Qi to be affected by Wind; when Wind combats with the Heart, it leads to fright and restlessness. If the fright persists, it develops into palpitations and unrest. The presentation includes eyes that do not move freely and an inability to speak. Palpation reveals a pulse that is moving (Dong) and weak (Ruo), indicating Fright and Palpitations. A "moving" pulse indicates Fright, while a "weak" pulse indicates Palpitations.
This formula (Qibao San / Seven-Treasure Powder) is suitable for use immediately after childbirth to harmonize Blood and Qi, tonify deficiency, calm the Spirit, and suppress fright and palpitations.
Ingredients: Cinnabar (Shachen, ground), Cinnamon Twig (Guixin), Angelica Sinensis (Danggui), Szechuan Lovage Rhizome (Chuanxiong), Ginseng (Renshen), Poria (Baifuling), Antelope Horn (Lingyangjiao, burned until carbonized but retaining its nature, each 2 qian above), Dried Ginger (Ganjiang, 1 qian; in other obstetric formulas, these are typically equal parts).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder. Take 1 qian per dose. Administer mixed with Qianghuo Doulin Wine (a wine prepared with Notopterygium root and beans, used for postpartum care). If alcohol is not consumed, mix with clear rice water. If feeling mental heat and stifling, administer mixed with decoction of Ophiopogon Tuber (Mendong, heart removed). If experiencing mental heat, stifling, and pain below the heart, administer mixed with urine of a healthy young boy. If feeling mental heat in the chest and heart, reduce the dosage of Dried Ginger and Cinnamon Twig; if feeling cold, increase them. For abdominal pain, add Angelica Sinensis; for mental stifling, add Antelope Horn; for Heart deficiency with timidity, add Cinnamon Twig; for anorexia or nausea, add Ginseng; for tremors due to deficiency, add Poria. Adjust according to judgment. Take twice daily and once at night.
