Commentary states: What is the cause of abdominal distension, chest fullness, and irregular vomiting after childbirth? The answer is: This is caused by residual blood (postpartum retained blood stasis) scattering into the Spleen and Stomach. When the Spleen is affected, it fails to transform and transport the essence of food and fluids, resulting in abdominal distension; when the Stomach is affected, it fails to receive and digest food and drink, leading to vomiting and regurgitation. If physicians do not understand this principle and treat it with ordinary medications for distension or vomiting, the medicine will be irrelevant to the disease, further damaging the healthy Qi, making the illness harder to cure. Simply taking Disheng Tang (Efficacious Sage Decoction) will lead to recovery.
Red Peony Root (Chishao), Pinellia Rhizome (Banxia), Leaf of Eupatorium (Zelan Ye), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Tangerine Peel (Chenpi) (each 1 fen), Licorice Root (Gancao) (1 qian).
The above herbs are cut into pieces. For each dose, use one bowl of water and half a liang of dried roasted ginger. Decoct until half a bowl remains, strain, and take warm in three divided doses.
The Stomach is the sea of water and grain. The essence from water and grain transforms into Blood and Qi to nourish the Zang-Fu organs. Childbirth causes injury and disturbance to the Zang-Fu organs. Sometimes, Qi becomes excessively abundant, causing Qi to invade the intestines and stomach. Due to dryness and stagnation in the intestines and stomach, Qi rebels upward, resulting in vomiting, regurgitation, and inability to eat.
For postpartime cold-Qi in the Spleen and Stomach, chest and epigastric fullness, vomiting and regurgitation, weakness in the four limbs, and inability to ingest food and drink, use Dingxiang San (Clove Powder).
Clove (Dingxiang), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Areca Seed (Binglang), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu), Cinnamon Twig (Guixin), Angelica Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Magnolia Bark (Noupo), Peucedanum Root (Qianhu) (each 3 fen), Licorice Root (Gancao) (0.5 liang), Galangal Rhizome (Liangjiang) (1 liang).
The above herbs are made into a coarse powder. Each dose is 4 qian. Use one lamp of water and three slices of ginger. Decoct until 7/10 remains, strain, and take warm on an empty stomach.
For postpartum disharmony of Stomach-Qi, incessant vomiting, and complete inability to eat, it is suitable to take Kaiewei San (Stomach-Opening Powder).
Chebula Fruit Flesh (Hezi Rou) (1.5 liang), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) (1 liang), Licorice Root (Gancao) (0.5 liang).
The above three ingredients are ground into a fine powder. Separately, take 0.5 fen of Pinellia Rhizome (Banxia), 1 fen of Ginger (Shengjiang), and two to seven stalks of Scallion Bulb (Xiebai). Use one large lamp of water, decoct until 6/10 remains, strain, and divide into two doses.
