Raw Aconiti Lateralis Radix (remove skin and umbilicus) Zingiberis Rhizoma Album (processed) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Ginseng Radix (each one liang)
Crush the above herbs. For each dose, take four qian. Add two zhan of water, decoct until seven parts remain, remove the dregs, and take on an empty stomach. If vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain occurs, add Cinnamomi Ramulus half a liang; if urination is difficult, add Poria half a liang. Generally speaking, for dysentery, even if the body is cold, extremities are reversedly cold, cold sweat pours out, and all six pulses are deep and hidden, it is not advisable to lightly use Aconiti Radix Preparata. This disease is often caused by latent summerheat. There are also cases with cold sweat pouring out, extremities reversedly cold, weak six pulses, but cold back, dirty complexion, or face like painted oil, dry teeth, vexation, dry thirst with desire to drink; this is a latent summerheat syndrome. Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction), Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria), and Jiuzheng Huanglian Wan (Wine-Steamed Coptis Pill) will surely be effective. Scholars should ponder deeply.
Yangqishi (crushed and flown/sifted, half a liang) Zhongru Fen (Calcii Carbonis Pulvis, one liang) Dafu Zi (Processed Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata, take half a liang of powder, half for medicine, half for paste)
Use the Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata paste to make pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take five to ten pills per dose, on an empty stomach, with warm wine. If thirsty, take with Ginseng Radix decoction.
Da Fu Zi (two liang and half, processed) Da Ren Shen (one liang)
Crush the above two herbs. For each dose, take four qian. Add two zhan of water, ten slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Freshum, fifteen buds of Caryophylli Flos, and a pinch of Oryza Sativa Fructus. Decoct until seven parts remain, and take warm on an empty stomach.
Treating anorexic dysentery (Jinkou Li). Meng Gongshi Langzhong transmitted that it is very wonderful.
Shilian Rou (Nelumbinis Semen) regardless of quantity, do not roast or remove the shell. Grind the flesh together with the plumule into fine powder. Take one qian per dose, mixed with old rice decoction. One will feel the desire to eat.
This disease is likely due to toxic qi rushing up to attack the Lung (Huagai), causing Heart Qi blockage, thus preventing food intake. After taking this medicine, Heart Qi becomes unblocked, and dysentery should stop immediately and heal. If not healed, take dysentery medicines on one's own.
Formula for treating anorexic dysentery: Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) regardless of quantity, half raw, half roasted yellow, grind into fine powder, mix with rice decoction and take.
Treating critical and distressed lower dysentery.
Shexiang (Moschus, half qian, separately ground, added at the time of use) Lurong (Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum, one liang, fire-burned to remove hair, roasted with butter until yellow, then ground into powder, mixed with Moschus)
Boil Junci Medulla in date flesh to make pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take fifty pills per dose, on an empty stomach.
Miu Lifu said: Some physicians add Banxiong (Boswelliae Resina) half a liang per batch, which is especially effective. People in Shaoxing suffering from dysentery often die. Medicines commonly used for dysentery such as Popaveris Pericarpium should not be taken orally; only this medicine and Meishizi Wan (Arecae Semens Preparata Pill) are effective.
Liu Congzhou Dysentery Mantra: Lin Qianshuo, the Jijiu (Imperial Tutor), said that physician Liu Congzhou was meritorious in treating diseases and his discussions were extraordinary. There is verification saying: Generally, dysentery, whether red or white, is classified into cold and heat syndromes. If hands and feet are warm, it is a Yang syndrome; simply take Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria), mixed with millet decoction; then take twenty Gan Ying Wan (Gan Ying Pill) and it will heal. If hands and feet are cold, it is a Yin syndrome; one should take warming medicines, such as Yi Han Wan (Yi Han Pill) or Aconiti Radix Preparata. Treating dysentery in this way is invariably effective. I have personally used this formula with success. Someone suffered from dysentery in summer, going sixty to seventy times a day; after two doses of Wu Ling San, it stopped.
Jiuzheng Huanglian Wan (Wine-Steamed Coptis Pill) (The "Ju Fang" description does not mention treating dysentery, but I have used it with good results), Jiang Fu Tang (Ginger and Aconite Decoction), Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction), Shen Ling Bai Zhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder), Xiang Ru San (Elsholtzia Powder), Bai Du San (Detoxification Powder), Li Zhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill), Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), Huanglian Ejiao Wan (Coptis and Donkey-Hide Gelatin Pill), Zhongru Jian Pi Wan (Calcium Carbonite Spleen-Strengthening Pill), Zhu Che Wan (Chariot Park Pill), Gan Ying Wan (Gan Ying Pill) (also sometimes made into pills mixed with Su He Xiang Wan (Styrax Pill), named Su Gan Wan. Also sometimes with added beeswax, made into Sophora japonica seed-sized pills, ten pills taken together), Wei Feng Tang (Stomach Wind Decoction), Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), Yu Hua Bai Dan (Yu Hua White Elixir), Shi Quan Da Bu Tang (Comprehensive Great Tonifying Decoction), Dou Men San (Dou Men Powder), Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria), Zhen Ren Yang Zang Tang (True Human Nourishing Viscera Decoction), Shui Zhu Mu Xiang Wan (Water-Boiled Costus Pill), Da Yi Han Wan (Great Warming Cold Pill). All the above formulas come from the official bureau, so they are not recorded again. Such as Dou Men San, Yang Zang Tang, Shui Zhu Mu Xiang Wan, Shen Xiang San, Doukou Bing, all contain Popaveris Pericarpium. However, this drug greatly damages the Spleen and Stomach, and ancient formulas did not use it. For people with strong Spleen and Stomach, those who take it often have good effects; I tentatively keep it here.
