Discomfort and a sensation of hunger mixed with pain in the chest and epigastrium (Xiongzhao), are conditions frequently seen in women. Tracing the origin of this disease, it is mostly caused by Phlegm (Tan). These phlegms are transformed from blood, body fluids, tears, and sweat. Some say this is "Blood Zao" (a type of discomfort attributed to blood disorders). Nowadays, people often cure it by eating stir-fried residual pig's blood. Examining the logic behind this, it is because using blood guides the blood back to its source. This is similar to the principle of using salted plum to suppress saliva secretion. It would be better to use Xu Xueshi's Xuanfuhua Decoction (Inula Flower Decoction). This formula treats phlegm-cold-water qi in the heart, abdomen, and Zhongwan (CV12) area, manifesting as a feeling of water accumulation below the heart, chest discomfort, borborygmus, excessive salivation, spontaneous flow of clear fluid from the mouth, and tightness, distension, fullness, and pain in the hypochondrium, along with anorexia. These symptoms are caused by deficiency-cold of Stomach Qi. The pulse is deep, slow, wiry, and thin, which characterizes this condition.
Xuanfuhua (Florentine Iris Flower), Beixixin (Asarum Root), Juhong (Tangerine Peel), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Gancao (Licorice Root), Kugeng (Platycodon Root), Baishao Yao (White Peony Root), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) (each 0.5 liang), Chifuling (Red Poria) (0.3 liang).
The above herbs are cut into small pieces. For each dose, take 4 qian. Add one and a half cups of water and seven slices of fresh ginger. Decoct until reduced to eight-tenths of the original volume. Strain and take warm.
The *Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang* treats morning sickness (Ezu) using Banxia Fuling Tang (Pinellia and Poria Decoction), which is also excellent. (See the discussion on Ezu).
Regarding vomiting in women, it arises from evil cold pathogens affecting the Spleen and Stomach, leading to dysfunction in the digestion and transportation of food and fluids. The Stomach is the sea of water and grain. If Stomach Qi is disordered, wind-cold pathogens invade. When cold clashes with the Stomach, Stomach Qi rebels upward, causing vomiting. I have carefully considered that vomiting diseases are not solely caused by deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach. There are cases of vomiting due to Stomach Heat; cases where the body of the Stomach is cold but the cardia is hot; cases due to abundant Phlegm; and cases due to Blood deficiency. The Classics state: "Without Yin, there is vomiting." Therefore, one cannot apply a uniform treatment for all cases.
If vomiting is caused by Stomach Cold, it is appropriate to use Ren Shen Ding Xiang San (Ginseng and Clove Powder) or Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill) from the *Ju Fang*, as well as Banxia Wan (Pinellia Pill) or Ren Shen Qi Wei Wan (Seven-Ingredient Ginseng Pill) by Xu Renze.
If vomiting is caused by Stomach Heat, it is appropriate to use Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction), Lugen Tang (Phragmites Rhizome Decoction), Zhuru Tang (Bamboo Shavings Decoction), or Huaihua San (Sophora Flower Powder).
If vomiting is caused by cold in the body of the Stomach and heat at the cardia, it is appropriate to use Huoxiang Zhengqi San (Agastache Powder to Rectify the Qi) from the *Ju Fang*, decocted with fresh ginger and dates. Taking it cooled stops the vomiting.
If vomiting is caused by abundant Phlegm, it is appropriate to use Banxia Fuling Tang (Pinellia and Poria Decoction) or Er Chen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction) from the *Ju Fang*.
For morning sickness (Ezu), Fuling Wan (Poria Pill) can be taken concurrently. (See Volume 12, Discussion 2 for specific details).
If vomiting is caused by blood failing to return to its source, it is appropriate to use Shiquan Dabu Tang (Comprehensive Great Tonifying Decoction) added with Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Huoxiang (Patchouli Herb), fresh ginger, and dates, decocted and taken orally.
If vomiting occurs alongside Hongjiao (Beriberi/Foot Qi), there are specific discussions elsewhere, so I dare not elaborate here.
