Discourse states: During pregnancy, the body is deficient. Upon contracting wind pathogen, the meridians and collaterals of the Taiyang (Greater Yang) are injured. Subsequently, wind-cold pathogens contend with each other. When it attacks, there is lockjaw (trismus) and stiffness of the back, termed Jing (spasm). (It is also said that) the signs include dizziness, oppression in the chest, and loss of consciousness. The patient recovers spontaneously after a short while, only to relapse after a long interval; this is termed Feng Jing (wind spasm). It is also named Zi Xian (infantile convulsion/eclampsia), or Zi Mao (pregnancy-related vertigo/fainting). In severe cases, opisthotonos (arching of the back) occurs.
For treating wind-stroke during pregnancy presenting with opisthotonos, lockjaw, and slurred speech, use Mahuang San (Ephedra Powder).
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, processed to remove joints) 1 liang, Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) 1 liang, Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) 1 liang, Lingyangjiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu, powdered) 1 liang, Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex) 1 liang, Shengma (Bupleuri Radix) 1 liang, Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, stir-baked) 1 liang, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 0.5 liang, Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) 0.5 liang, Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) 3 fen, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 3 fen, Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, processed) 3 fen.
Crush the above herbs. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1 sheng of water and 4 slices of fresh ginger. Decoct until reduced to 6 fen. Strain the dregs. Add 0.5 he of Zhuli (Bamboo Sap). Take warm.
For treating wind-stroke during pregnancy presenting with lower back pain, stiffness, and intermittent opisthotonos, use Fangfeng Gegen Tang (Saposhnikovia and Kudzu Root Decoction).
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) 2 liang, Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) 2 liang, Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) 2 liang, Shenggan Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens, dried) 2 liang, Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, processed) 1.5 liang, Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, processed to remove joints) 1.5 liang, Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex) 1 liang, Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) 1 liang, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 liang, Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) 1 liang.
Crush the above herbs. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1 sheng of water. Decoct until reduced to 7 fen. Strain the dregs. Take warm.
The "Duan Ju" text records the treatment for sudden fainting during pregnancy where the eyes cannot recognize people, followed by spontaneous recovery and recurrence, or sometimes failure to recover. This is termed Chi disease. It is also named Zi Xian (infantile convulsion/eclampsia), or Zi Mao (pregnancy-related vertigo/fainting). Use Gegen Tang (Kudzu Root Decoction). If bamboo is nearby and can be obtained quickly, prepare Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) first, then prepare the decoction; if bamboo is distant and cannot be obtained immediately, prepare the decoction first. Mastering either method suffices. Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) is particularly effective for treating various types of closure syndromes and resuscitating the critically ill. It is not only effective for pregnant women who appear dead but also for pediatric convulsions and sores from metal wounds. The method for preparing Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) is found in Volume 3, Discourse 1.
For treating pregnancy near term, where contraction of wind pathogen causes sudden fainting, inability to recognize people, vomiting, dizziness, and falling, with brief recovery followed by recurrence, this is named Zi Xian (infantile convulsion/eclampsia).
Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) 2 liang, Beimu (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus, heart removed) 2 liang, Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex, heart removed) 2 liang, Mufangji (Stephaniae Membranaceae Radix) 2 liang, Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) 2 liang, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 2 liang, Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) 2 liang, Baifuling (Poria) 2 liang, Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex, roasted) 2 liang, Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) 2 liang, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 2 liang, Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) 3 liang, Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, crushed) 3 liang, Renshen (Ginseng Radix) 3 liang.
Cut the herbs finely. Add 9 sheng of water. Boil to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into two doses. Beimu (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus) facilitates easy delivery. If not yet at term, substitute with Shengma (Bupleuri Radix). Avoid consuming Haizao (Sargassum), Songcai (Brassica pekinensis), and vinegar products. (See Volume 3, Discourse 2 for details. Other formulas may also be selected and used in detail.)
