When a woman's zang-fu organs are harmonious, her qi and blood will be abundant, preventing wind pathogens and demonic influences from invading. If the Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) systems are deficient and damaged, the spirit will weaken, allowing demonic essences to enter the viscera. The condition resembles pregnancy, hence it is called "Ghost Fetus" (Gui Tai).
For treating Ghost Fetus during pregnancy, characterized by the discharge of dark blood from the abdomen and abdominal pain, use Xionghuang Wan (Realgar Pill).
Ingredients: Xionghuang (Realgar, ground finely), Guijiu (Podophyllum, de-haired), Mangcao (Daphne genkwa bark), Dansha (Cinnabar, ground finely), Badou (Crotonis Fructus, peeled, heart and oil removed), Tagan (Leporis Hepatis, roasted until yellow, each 0.5 liang), Xiyyi (Gecko, one piece, roasted until yellow), Wugong (Centipede, one strip, roasted until slightly yellow).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder, mix with honey to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take two pills on an empty stomach with warm wine, twice daily. Diarrhea should follow. If no diarrhea occurs, increase to three pills. Initially, clear water will be discharged, followed by countless worms resembling horse tails. In severe cases, snake-like worms or masses resembling egg yolks, white paste, or bean juice may be expelled. The disease will then be cured.
For treating Ghost Fetus in women and unbearable pain due to qi and blood stagnation:
Ingredients: Banmao (Mylabris, head, wings, and legs removed, processed), Yanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizoma, stir-fried, each three pieces).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder, further milling until smooth like flour. Mix with warm wine and take half qian. Stop when the fetus/mass is expelled.
For treating emaciated women with Ghost Fetus masses and amenorrhea:
Ingredients: Yuanhuagen (Genkwa Radicis Cortex, 3 liang).
Cut the herbs, stir-fry until yellow, and grind into a fine powder. Take one qian per dose, mixed with decoction of Tao Ren (Persicae Semen). Evil matter should be discharged.
Discussion states: During winter's severe cold, if the human body is weak and injured by cold, it becomes Shanghan (Cold Damage). Mild cases present with shivering chills, slight fever, mild cough, and nasal congestion, resolving after several days; severe cases involve headache and body ache, alternating chills and fever. If prolonged without cure, it damages the fetus. For pregnant women suffering from Shanghan, Zhang Zhongjing provided no specific treatment methods; medication requires caution and avoidance of certain substances, and cannot be treated uniformly as for non-pregnant women.
For treating pre-partum abdominal pain, regulating menstrual flow (too much or too little, early or late), and unstable fetal qi. Also for postpartum undissipated blood stasis, excessive blood loss, or lochia retention. Use Jiajian Siwu Tang (Modified Four Substances Decoction).
Ingredients: Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) (in another prescription, raw Dihuang is used, each 1 liang).
Cut the herbs. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1.5 cups of water, boil down to 0.8 cup, retain 0.6 cup of clear liquid, and take hot. Administer four times daily. Continue until improvement is observed.
If bleeding occurs during pregnancy, add 6-7 leaves of Aiye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) and 1 qian of Ejiao (Asini Corii Colla) powder, decoct together. If the condition is severe and powders are insufficient, cut each of the four ingredients (0.5 liang each) finely, add 4 cups of water, boil down to 2.5 cups, strain, and divide into four doses. Take hot before meals, finishing within one day. Continue until improvement is observed. For normal postpartum nursing, take until three lunar months pass; if weak with irregular blood viscera function, take for one month.
If deficiency leads to heat, and heat combats blood causing dry mouth and throat with thirst, add Gualougen (Trichosanthis Radix) 1 liang and Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) 3 fen.
For stabbing abdominal pain and inability to discharge evil matter, add Danggui and Shaoyao each 1 fen. For metrorrhagia, add Dihuang and Puhuang each 1 liang. If heat generates wind, add Chuanxiong 1 fen and Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) 0.5 liang. For fever and restless pulse, dizziness and stiff neck, add Chaihu and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) each 0.5 liang. For constipation, add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) 0.5 liang and Taoren (Persicae Semen) 1 fen (stir-fried). If loose stools occur, add Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Shufuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) each 1 fen. For chills and fever, add Jiangjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex) and Shaoyao each 1 fen. For vomiting, add Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Renshen (Ginseng Radix) each 0.5 liang. For abdominal distension, add Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) and Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) each 1 fen. For deficiency heat causing restlessness and insomnia, add Zhuye (Phyllostachys Nigra Folium) and Renshen each 1 fen. For irritability and extreme thirst, add Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) each 0.5 liang. For fluid retention under the heart with mild nausea, add Zhuling (Polyporus), Fuling (Poria), and Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) each 1 fen. For deficiency-cold symptoms resembling Shanghan, add Renshen, Chaihu, and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) each 3 fen.
