The spleen corresponds to Earth in the Five Elements. The spleen is located in the central region and is the organ governing intention and wisdom. The liver, heart, lungs, and kidneys all receive the essence and qi of the spleen to be nourished. The spleen and stomach are exterior-interiorly related. The spleen governs the transformation of grains and the acceptance of food, while the stomach is the sea of water and grains. Therefore, the classics state that the qi of the stomach is the foundation for all four seasons. In women, if blood and qi are unregulated, and the zang-fu organs are damaged by overwork, wind pathogens and cold qi accumulate internally and attack the spleen and stomach. Since the spleen and stomach are deficient and attacked by pathogens, they cannot process the five grains, thus leading to an inability to eat.
