Oak Bark (Quercus cortex, cut, 3 sheng)
Take the above herb and decoct it in 10 dou of water until reduced to 5 sheng. In summer, use cold water; in autumn and winter, warm it appropriately. Divide the liquid to wash the breasts. It can also be used to wash various deep, ulcerated, and chronic sores. After washing, apply a plaster or powder. This method is the same as that in *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold).
Gastrodia Rhizome Herb (Tianma Cao, cut, 5 sheng)
Decoct the above herb in 15 dou of water until reduced to 10 dou. Wash the breasts according to the temperature (cool or warm) to relieve itching. The leaves of this herb resemble those of hemp; it grows in winter and flowers in summer. The flowers are red, resembling the flowers of *Caryopteris*. It can also be used to wash impetigo-like yellow-weeping hot sores with itching, damp gangrene, genital erosion sores, and infantile scalp sores. After washing, apply a plaster or powder. (Same as *Qianjin Fang*)
Xiangfen (The black smoke collected from heating Cinnabar to produce Mercury, 3 liang, roasted until dry and charred) Alum Stone (Fan Shi, 3 liang, calcined into powder)
Sift the above two ingredients through silk cloth. Mix them with Jiajian (a traditional adhesive base made from insect secretions) to form a paste-like consistency. Apply this paste to breast sores three times daily. If prepared as a powder, mixing is unnecessary; it will adhere naturally if there is exudate. It can also be applied to various hot sores, weeping yellow impetigo sores, honey-colored crusts (impetigo), male genital erosion with itching and dampness, various infantile scalp sores, gan erosion, perioral fatty sores, and spider-web-like sores. (Same as *Qianjin Fang*)
Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian, 2 liang) Lead White (Hufen, 10 fen) Mercury (Shuiyin, 1 liang, ground together until dispersed)
Pulverize the Huanglian. Mix the three ingredients thoroughly. Wrap the mixture in skin and cook it熟 (heat/steam) until cooked. This is for self-preparation. Even if one cannot gather all ingredients from a single source, ensure the mercury is finely dispersed into the lead white powder. Apply to breast sores, various damp itches, and yellow-weeping fatty sores. If mixed with Jiajian, it becomes a plaster. (Same as *Qianjin Fang*)
In women, Ru Yong (Breast Abscess) occurs due to swelling and accumulation in the breast, where the skin becomes thin and shiny, indicating the formation of an abscess. The Foot-Yangming Meridian experiences blood stasis and obstruction. Blood converges here, and Qi accumulates without dispersing, leading to the formation of the abscess. *Qianjin Fang* states: Patients under forty years old often recover with treatment, while those over fifty must be treated promptly to improve. Without treatment, death often occurs in middle age. Furthermore, breast abscesses occurring during pregnancy or other body abscesses generally pose no harm. This is because pregnancy-related abscesses originate in the Yangming Meridian, which belongs to the Stomach and governs the muscles, not damaging the Zang organs, hence no harm. Palpation of the Guan position on the right hand showing a Chen (Deep) pulse indicates Yin Deficiency, predisposing to Yong (Abscess) or Ru Yong. If untreated for a long time, it may transform into a Fistula (Lou).
During the Kaiqing era, Lady Wu, wife of Zeng Duyun Gongren from Jialin, Gan Chuan, suffered from Nai Yong (Breast Abscess) at the age of fifty and subsequently passed away. This confirms that the words of the sages are not spoken lightly.
*Chanbao* (Treasures of Childbirth) discusses: Postpartum women should frequently empty breast milk and avoid accumulation. Failure to discharge bad fluids allows internal heat to accumulate, causing hard, firm swelling, pulling pain, thirst, and tenderness upon touch. If pus forms, it is called Du Ru (Jealous Breast), which is more urgent than a standard abscess. One should take Lianqiao Tang (Forsythia Decoction) to drain heat and toxins. Externally, apply a paste of Xiaochidou (Adzuki Bean) powder mixed with water for quick recovery. Alternatively, manually express milk several times, massage with a child's hand, or have an adult suckle the breast and spit out the fluid, which may resemble pus. If a woman does not breastfeed postpartum and milk accumulates, it can also form an abscess.
