A patient suffered from this condition, starting in the afternoon and resolving at dusk. I said: This ailment must originate from the feet. The classics state that each of the twelve meridians has associated sinews, but only the sinew channel of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney meridian extends from the foot to the neck. Generally, sinews are associated with the Liver. From noon to dusk is the Yang of Heaven, specifically Yin within Yang. Furthermore, Yin within Yang corresponds to the Lung. From the Li (Wu hour, noon) to Dui (You hour, dusk) periods is when Yin is prosperous and Yang is weak. Thus, the *Lingbao Mifa* states: From Li to Qian (Xu hour, evening), Kidney Qi exhausts and Liver Qi weakens. When the Liver and Kidney organs are affected by Yin Qi, symptoms manifest at this time. I received this prescription and was cured after three doses.
The Kidney governs the waist, and in women, the Kidney is connected to the Bao Luo (uterine network). If Kidney Qi is deficient, external contraction of the Six Excesses (Liu Yin) or internal injury from the Seven Emotions can all lead to lower back pain. Ancient formulas describe five types of lower back pain. For example, for wind-induced lower back pain, Xiao Xuming Tang (Minor Rescue Life Decoction) added with Persicae Semen (Taoren) and Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong) is appropriate; for lower back pain due to Spleen-Stomach Qi obstruction and cold-dampness, Wuji San (Five Accumulations Powder) added with Persicae Semen (Taoren) is suitable. For deficiency injuries and the five types of lower back pain, Qing'e Wan (Green Eagle Pill) and Shenyi Wan (Divine Response Pill) (all these formulas are found in the *Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang*) can be used. For lower back pain due to Qi stagnation, Shenbao Wan (Spirit Treasure Pill), Black Morning Glory Seed (Hei Qianniu), Fennel Seed (Huixiang), and Tangerine Seed (Juhe) will certainly be effective.
