Treats cold pathogenic factors invading the five Zang organs, manifesting as lockjaw (trismus), rigidity of the four limbs, aphonia (loss of voice), and inability to speak. In the past, a warrior guarding the border went out of his tent to look at the heavy snow and suddenly fainted. The symptoms recurred intermittently. The accompanying medical officer administered this medicine to him, and he woke up after taking two doses.
Da Fuzi (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix) [Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma)] [Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens)] [Gan Cao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma)] [Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma)] (equal parts).
Finely chop the above ingredients. For each dose, use 4 qian (approx. 15g). Add 1.5 liang (approx. 375ml) of water, decoct until reduced to 0.7 liang (approx. 175ml), remove the dregs, and take at any time. If there is lockjaw, pry open the mouth and administer the liquid.
In July of the Jiwei year of the Kaiqing era, Lady Cao, wife of Ma Guanwen Yuzhai, suffered from weak breath and fatigue, cold extremities, aversion to cold with spontaneous sweating, and inability to eat or drink. One physician diagnosed it as latent summerheat and administered summerheat-clearing medicines; another diagnosed it as deficiency-cold and administered warming medicines; neither was effective. I was summoned to diagnose her. Although the six pulses were weak, the guan positions on both sides were particularly severe. Yuzhai asked, "What condition is this?" I replied, "Judging by the pulse, although all six positions are weak, the guan position is especially pronounced, indicating cold in the Middle Jiao. The Middle Jiao refers to the Spleen. Since the Spleen and Stomach are cold, not only will these symptoms appear, but there must also be abdominal pain and vomiting/diarrhea. Now, the extremities are cold; the four limbs belong to the Spleen, so it is undoubtedly deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach." He replied, "I have not yet seen abdominal pain or vomiting/diarrhea. What medicine should be used for treatment?" I replied, "It is suitable to use Fuzi Lizhong Tang (Aconite Decoction to Regulate the Middle)." Before taking the medicine, abdominal pain and diarrhea immediately occurred, which everyone found miraculous! The medicine was prepared immediately, and one dose resulted in recovery.
Treats sudden apoplexy (stroke) with loss of consciousness, gradually progressing to hemiplegia, deviation of the mouth and eyes, trembling of hands and feet, dysarthria (slurred speech), numbness of the limbs, confusion of spirit and mind, dizziness and heaviness of the head and eyes, excessive phlegm and saliva, spasm of sinews and vessels with inability to flex and extend, painful joints, and inability to turn over. It is also effective for treating various wind diseases. If used to treat weakness of the legs (Hongjiao/Jiaji), long-term administration can lead to recovery. For those suffering from chronic wind diseases, it is advisable to take this medicine prophylactically when the weather becomes gloomy or seasons change, to prevent aphonia.
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, roots and nodes removed) [Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Rhizoma)] [Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma)] [Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix)] [Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus)] [Gan Cao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma)] [Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba)] [Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma)] [Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum)] (each 1 liang) [Fu Zi (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix, 0.5 liang)] [Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 1.5 liang)].
Crush the above ingredients. For each dose, use 5 qian (approx. 18.75g). Add 1.5 liang (approx. 375ml) of water, 7 slices of fresh ginger, and 2 jujubes. Decoct until reduced to 0.7 liang (approx. 175ml), remove the dregs, and take at any time. Induce sweating according to the patient's deficiency/excess status and the severity of the wind invasion. Someone with weak legs recovered after taking 6-7 doses.
For mental restlessness and absent-mindedness, add Fu Shen (Poria Cum Radix) and Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix). For painful joints with heat, remove Fu Zi and double the amount of Shao Yao. For irritability and frequent fright, add Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) 0.5 liang. For cold painful joints, double the amounts of Gui Xin and Fu Zi. For nausea, regurgitation, and abdominal distension, double the amount of Ren Shen and add Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) 1 liang. For restlessness, chest oppression, and constipation, remove Fu Zi, double the amount of Shao Yao, and add Zhu Li (Bambusae Succus) 1 he (approx. 200ml) to decoct and take. For cold viscera with diarrhea, remove Fang Ji and Huang Qin, double the amount of Fu Zi by 1 liang, and add Bai Zhu 1 liang (The *Gu Jin Lu Yan* contains Bai Zhu but no Xing Ren). The *Jiu Ji* formula lacks Chuan Xiong and Xing Ren, containing only ten ingredients. The *Yan Nian* formula lacks Fang Feng. For cases with normal bowel/bladder function, postpartum blood loss, the elderly, and children, use Mahuang, Gui Xin, and Gan Cao, each 2 liang.
Another method: For symptoms such as singing and crying or laughing and talking incessantly without restraint. Use Mahuang 3 liang, Ren Shen, Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), and Bai Zhu, each 2 liang. Do not use Fu Zi, Fang Feng, or Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger); instead, add Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 1 liang. For spontaneous sweating, remove Mahuang and Xing Ren, and add Bai Zhu.
For weak legs, add Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) and Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis), each 1 liang. For body pain, add Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) 1 liang. For lower back pain, add Tao Ren (Persicae Semen) and Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex), each 0.5 liang. For aphonia, add Xing Ren 1 liang. (Add Mahuang 1 liang in spring, Huang Qin 3 fen in summer, Dang Gui 4 liang in autumn, and Fu Zi 0.5 liang in winter.)
