Lingyang Jiao San (Antelope Horn Decoction, see *Ancient Formulas of Furen Gui*) treats deficiency wind during pregnancy, characterized by stiffness and rigidity of the neck and nape, spasms of tendons and vessels, slurred speech, difficulty in expectorating phlegm and saliva, and loss of consciousness. This condition is named Zi Xian (Eclampsia of Pregnancy).
Antelope Horn (sliced) Chuan Duhuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen) Wujia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex) Yiyi Ren (Coix Seed, stir-fried) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) Fushen (Poria with Hostwood) Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Seed, skin and tip removed, each 5 fen) Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, each 1 fen)
Add five slices of fresh ginger to the above herbs, decoct with water, and take orally. If caused by wind-heat in the Liver channel or anger/fire, Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) must be used.
"If food stagnation occurs, leading to abdominal distension and vomiting, this indicates Spleen and Stomach deficiency with inability to digest food. Use Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction). If ineffective, use Pingwei San (Stomach-Pacifying Powder) added with Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Fuling (Poria). Or if fetal qi causes distension, or distension causes pain, this indicates Spleen and Stomach Qi deficiency unable to support the fetus. Use Antai Yin (Fetus-Securing Drink) added with Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma). If ineffective, use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction).
Li Dongyuan's Pingwei San (see *Gu Fang Ba Zhen · He Zhen*) treats disharmony of the Spleen and Stomach, lack of appetite, fullness, distension, stabbing pain in the heart, abdomen, hypochondrium, and ribs, vomiting, hiccups, nausea, acid regurgitation, belching, heavy body, joint pain, spontaneous diarrhea, cholera, dysphagia, and regurgitation.
Houpo (Magnolia Bark, processed with ginger and stir-fried) Chenpi (Tangerine Peel, white pith removed, each 5 liang) Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, skin removed, soaked in rice wash water and stir-fried, 8 liang) Zhigancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 3 liang)
Adding Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Fuling (Poria), each 2 liang, to this formula creates Shenling Pingwei San (Ginseng and Poria Stomach-Pacifying Powder).
Grind the above into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, with one zhong of water, three slices of ginger, and two jujubes. Decoct until seven parts remain, strain, and take warm. Alternatively, remove ginger and jujube, add a small pinch of salt, and take with boiling water alone. If urination is difficult, add Fuling (Poria) and Zexie (Alisma Rhizoma). If food is not digested, add Shenqu (Medicated Leaven), Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus), and Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange). If there is Qi pain in the stomach, add Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange), or Zhike (Ripe Bitter Orange). If Spleen and Stomach are fatigued, add Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Huangqi (Astragali Radix). If there is phlegm, add Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber). If stool is hard and abdomen is distended, add Dahuang (Rhubarb Root) and Mangxiao (Mirabilite). If pulse is large with internal heat, add Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix).
Antai Yin (Fetus-Securing Drink, see *Ancient Formulas of Furen Gui*) treats pregnancy at five to seven months; taking several doses can ensure safe delivery.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) Chenpi (Tangerine Peel) Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried) Zisu (Perillae Folium) Zhi Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, honey-fried, each 1 qian)
Decoct with ginger water and take orally. Another version includes Shaoren (Amomi Fructus).
"If there is distension in the umbilical and abdominal area, or dribbling obstruction of urine, this indicates Spleen and Stomach Qi deficiency with fetal pressure on the bladder. Use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Erchen Tang (Two Aged Things Decoction), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma). Take on an empty stomach, then induce vomiting. After the medicine is expelled and breath stabilizes, administer medicine again and induce vomiting again. After several times, it will surely stabilize.
"If injured by labor or overwork, or after eating fried foods, blood appears in the urine. This indicates blood flowing into the uterus due to heat. Clear the Bladder using Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder). If there is involuntary urination or frequent urination, this indicates Liver fire and Blood heat. Use Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder). If there is chest fullness and abdominal distension, urinary retention, and generalized edema, named Taishui Buli (Difficulty in Discharging Fetal Water), use Liyu Tang (Carp Decoction). For Spleen and Stomach deficiency, assist with Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction).
Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder, see Menstrual Pain Chapter)
Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder, see Irregular Menstruation Chapter)
*Qianjin Fang*'s Liyu Tang (Carp Decoction, see *Ancient Formulas of Furen Gui*) treats abdominal distension in pregnancy, fluid accumulation in the fetus, generalized edema, difficulty in urination, or fetal death in utero; all are effective.
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, each 1 qian) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 qian) Fuling (Poria, 1.5 qian) Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum, 5 fen) Carp (one tail, any size)
Prepare as one dose. Scale and clean the carp, boil in plain water until cooked, remove the fish, and retain 1.5 zhong of the broth. Add the herbs and five slices of ginger, decoct until one zhong remains, and take on an empty stomach. Fetal water should be discharged. If the water is not fully discharged and fetal death persists with unresolved distension and oppression, prepare another dose until the water is gone and distension subsides.
"The disease name may be the same while symptoms differ, and symptoms may differ while the disease name is the same. This is briefly illustrated by the original formulas. When using symptomatic medicines, if they are ineffective, treatment should be differentiated by month and meridian."
Xu Donggao said: When the fetus is unstable accompanied by lower back pain, abdominal pain, and even a sensation of bearing down, it is not necessarily due to Qi and Blood deficiency failing to nourish the fetus.
The fetus in the womb is like fruit on a branch; if the branch withers, the fruit falls, which is naturally logical. If women indulge in desires, causing fire to move internally, it can also lead to fetal instability and miscarriage. Generally, this falls within the categories of deficiency or fire. Treatments that clear heat and nourish blood cover these aspects. Furthermore, there are two other causes for disturbing the fetus that must be known. One is when the mother's illness disturbs the fetus; treating the mother's illness will stabilize the fetus. The other is when physical trauma disturbs the fetus; administering two or three doses of Fetus-Securing Medicines will stabilize the fetus.
