Postpartum pain caused by the upward rush of accumulated blood masses is mostly due to cold wind invading after childbirth. Urgently administering Yanhu San (Corydalis Powder) can expel the blood stasis; if it persists for a long time without dispersing, it forms a Xuejia (blood mass). Additionally, Hanhan (cold hernia/abdominal pain due to cold) also causes pain; using Wuzhuyu Tang (Evodia Decoction) to warm and disperse the cold is sufficient, without the need for purgative methods.
[Note] A hard mass in the abdomen postpartum that is firm and causes stabbing pain is mostly due to wind-cold pathogens invading through deficiency after childbirth, causing blood stasis to coagulate. It is appropriate to administer Yansu San (Dioscorea Hypoglauca Powder) to expel it. If left untreated for a long time without dispersing, it will inevitably form a Xuejia (blood mass). There is also the condition of Hanhan (cold hernia), which also causes stabbing pain in the lower abdomen; this belongs to stagnation and obstruction due to cold qi. It is appropriate to use Wuzhuyu Tang (Evodia Decoction) to warm and disperse the cold, leading to natural recovery, without the need for purgatives.
Wuzhuyu Tang (Evodia Decoction) (Formula seen in Volume 1)
Postpartum tendon spasms, commonly known as Jizhao Feng (chicken-claw wind), occur when blood deficiency and fluid damage are compounded by wind invasion. For those without sweating, Yangrong Tang (Nourishing Ying Decoction) combined with exterior-dispersing herbs is indicated, specifically Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), and Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis). For those with sweating, Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) added with Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), and Ejiao (Asini Corii Colla) is indicated to greatly tonify Ying blood.
[Note] Postpartum tendon spasms and pain, inability to extend freely, commonly known as Jizhao Feng (chicken-claw wind), are all due to postpartum blood deficiency failing to nourish the tendons, combined with wind pathogen invasion, thus causing spasms and pain. In cases without sweating, it is appropriate to dispel external pathogens while nourishing Ying, using Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), and Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis). In cases with sweating, it is appropriate to use Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) added with Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), and Ejiao (Asini Corii Colla) to greatly tonify Ying blood.

Postpartum food injury causing epigastric fullness, aversion to food odors, gastric discomfort, acid regurgitation, or vomiting sour fluid. Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) added with Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), and Suosha Ren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus) should be used together; if accompanied by vomiting, acid reflux, and phlegm-saliva, Er Chen Tang (Two Aged Ingredients Decoction) should be decocted for regulation.
[Note] Overconsumption of meat and noodles postpartum, injuring the diet,必然 leads to chest and heart fullness, aversion to smelling food odors, mental restlessness and gastric discomfort, acid regurgitation, and vomiting sour fluid. It is appropriate to use Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) added with Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), and Suosha Ren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus) to tonify while resolving stagnation. If there is additionally vomiting, acid reflux, and phlegm-saliva, it indicates a combination of phlegm and fluid retention. It is appropriate to use Er Chen Tang (Two Aged Ingredients Decoction) with modifications for treatment.

Dingxiang Doukou San (Clove and Cardamom Powder) Rujuyin (Zhusu and Citrus Decoction)
Postpartum hiccups are due to stomach deficiency and cold. Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), Baikou (Cardamomi Albi Fructus), and Fulonggan (Caoshixin Tu - Caulis Longanae Folium / Furnax Terra) can be used, or taken with Tao Ren (Persicae Semen) and Wuzhuyu Tang (Evodia Decoction). One should not urgently add Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata). If fever, thirst, red face, and dark urine appear, it indicates heat; Zhu Ru (Bambusae Membrana Saccharina), Ganshi (Dried Persimmon), and Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum) should be decocted and taken.
[Note] Postpartum hiccups are all due to dual injury of Qi and Blood, spleen and stomach deficiency-cold, causing middle Jiao Qi to rebel and become unsmooth. It is appropriate to take Dingxiang Doukou San (Clove and Cardamom Powder), which consists of Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), Baikou (Cardamomi Albi Fructus), and Fulonggan (Furnax Terra) ground into powder, taken with decoction of Tao Ren (Persicae Semen) and Wuzhuyu Tang (Evodia Decoction). If ineffective, Shen Fu Tang (Ginseng and Aconite Decoction) should be used to vigorously tonify. If fever, red face, and dark urine occur, it belongs to excess-heat. It is appropriate to decoct and take Zhu Ru (Bambusae Membrana Saccharina), Ganshi (Dried Persimmon), and Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum), named Rujuyin (Zhusu and Citrus Decoction).
