Remarks: If an infant passes blood in stool or urine within seven days after birth, this is caused by excessive heat in the fetal qi. When the mother consumes alcohol, wheat products, and roasted or fried hot-natured foods, the heat toxin flows into the Heart and Lung meridians. The fetus, while in the womb, absorbs this heat toxin, which also transmits to the Heart and Lungs. Since the Heart governs blood (in relation to the Small Intestine), it manifests as hematuria in females; since the Lung governs Qi and connects with the Large Intowel (in relation to the Large Intestine), it manifests as hematochezia in males. The blood may appear pale red, resembling meat-washing water; when severe, the blood is bright red. For such cases, do not use other medicines. Instead, use fresh Rehmanniae Radix (Sheng Dihuang), extract its natural juice, mix with a small amount of honey, and administer warm. The condition will stabilize shortly. This method is effective for both male and female infants. Ganlu Yin can be taken concurrently. Decocting dense decoctions of Imperatae Rhizoma (Maogen) and Imperatae Flos (Maohua) is also excellent. Xijiao Dihuang Tang can also be used. Zangdu Ju Jin Wan is effective. Dihuang Wan can also be applied. In cases with blood stasis, Taoren Chengqi Tang should be used to purge the stasis.
Ganlu Yin: Treats guest-heat in the stomach of children, causing bleeding gums with foul breath, swelling and ulceration of the gingiva, frequent discharge of pus and blood, a constant desire to keep the mouth closed (due to pain/discomfort), hunger with irritability but loss of appetite, red and swollen eyes intolerant to cold-cold medicines, sores on the mouth and tongue, and swollen/painful throat. It is suitable for cases where pox/rashes have erupted or are about to erupt. It treats yellowish edema of the body and face, slight general edema, chest and diaphragm fullness of Qi, irregular bowel movements, yellow and obstructive urination, and occasional fever.
Ingredients: Shu Dihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed, baked), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus, stir-fried), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried), Shanyinyinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Pipaye (Loquat Leaf, brushed clean of hairs), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis, rhizome removed), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Sheng Gan Dihuang (Raw Dry Rehmanniae Radix), Tianmendong (Asparagi Radix, heart removed, baked). All ingredients in equal proportions.
Usage: Coarsely powder the above ingredients. Take 2 qian per dose, add one cup of water, decoct to 0.7 cups, filter dregs, and take warm after meals before bedtime. For children, divide one dose into two servings, adjusting according to age.
Ju Jin Wan: Treats hematochezia, fever with irritability, abdominal heat-pain with thirst, and wiry-rapid pulse. It also treats fright-heat with red, dim, and gritty eyes, or bleeding due to alcohol toxicity.
Ingredients: Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizome, 4 liang total: 1 liang soaked in water then dried, 1 liang stir-fried, 1 liang processed/pao, 1 liang raw); Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 1 liang); Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, rhizome removed, 1 liang).
Usage: Grind into fine powder, bind with wheat paste into pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 50 pills per dose, adjust as needed, swallow with Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus) water soaked in rice wash water, at any time. In summer, add 1 liang of Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma); not needed in spring, autumn, and winter. Alternatively, powder Zhiqiao and mix with the above powder; also effective. For children, make pills the size of mung beans; also treats bloody dysentery.
Xijiao Dihuang Tang: Treats Shanghan (Cold Damage) and Wenbing (Warm Diseases) where sweating was indicated but not performed, leading to internal blood stasis, manifesting as hematemesis (vomiting blood) or epistaxis (nosebleed), sallow complexion, and black stool. This formula primarily resolves blood stasis and also treats excessive eruption of rashes/pox to resolve toxicity.
Ingredients: Sheng Xijiao (Rhino Horn, shaved; substitute with Shengma if unavailable, 1 liang); Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex, bone removed, 1 liang); Sheng Dihuang (Raw Rehmanniae Radix, 8 liang); Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, 7.5 qian).
Usage: Coarsely powder. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct with one cup of water.
Qianjin Dihuang Wan: Treats intestinal wind due to Heart heat, and bleeding due to Zangdu (visceral toxin).
Ingredients: Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizome, 4 liang, coarse powder); Sheng Dihuang (Raw Rehmanniae Radix, 8 liang, ground to extract juice, mixed with dregs, sun-dried until extremely dry).
Usage: Grind into fine powder, bind with refined honey into pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 30 pills per dose, swallow with Maimendong Tang after meals, adjust according to patient's size/age.
Taoren Chengqi Tang: Treats fecal impaction due to blood stasis, passing bright red or black blood.
Ingredients: Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 4 liang); Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 2 liang); Gancao (Licorice Root, 2 liang); Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 2 liang); Taoren (Persicae Semen, 50 kernels, skin and tip removed, non-double kernels; most texts agree, only external books use 150).
Usage: Coarsely powder. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct with water. Stop when bowel movement is unobstructed; if not relieved, administer again.
