The symptoms of Bianzheng (periodic growth and development in infants) resemble Taiyang disease (diseases affecting the Taiyang channel, often presenting with fever and aversion to cold). Fever, convulsions, coughing with heavy voice, sneezing, startled crying, absence of sweating, hot ears, and red lips and tongue tip without white blisters indicate a common cold (wind-cold invasion). If the ears are cold, or there is no sweat or spontaneous sweating, and white blisters like fish eyes appear on the upper lip, these are signs of Bianzheng. Although an infant's skin, bones, muscles, zang-fu organs, Qi, and Blood are fully formed after birth, they are not yet substantial; therefore, Bianzheng occurs.
"Bian" means change; "Zheng" means heat. With each episode of Zheng, Qi and Blood become slightly stronger, and the spirit becomes distinct. After ten changes and five steamings, followed by three major steamings, totaling 576 days, the process of Bianzheng is completed, and the child then grows into an adult. When encountering these symptoms, one must not easily use diaphoretic (sweating) or purgative methods. Severe cases resolve in seven days, while mild cases resolve in two or three days naturally. For severe conditions, Lijing Wan (Relieve Convulsion Pill), Hupo Baolong Wan (Amber Embrace Dragon Pill), and Xingxing San (Xingxing Powder) are all effective. For abdominal distension and rapid breathing, Wuse Wan (Five-Color Pill) and Baiyu Bing (White Jade Cake) can be used to induce mild purgation.
Preparation of Badou (Croton Seed): Take any amount of Badou, remove the shell, select fresh, white, and moist kernels, grind them into a paste, wrap them heavily in paper, press with a stone to remove the oil, and place them on the ground. In winter, leave for one to two months; in summer, leave for half a month. Allow them to release plum-rain moisture and detoxify before use. Otherwise, it will harm people.
Preparation of Niudan Nanxing (Arisaema with Cattle Gallbladder): Take any amount of Nanxing, grind into powder, mix with bile from a black cattle slaughtered in the twelfth lunar month to moisten it (yellow cattle bile is secondary), pour back into the original gallbladder, hang in a ventilated place for three months before use. Preparation during the dog days (hottest period of summer) is better. (Nanxing has a fierce nature and should not be used lightly without processing.)
Baiyu Bing: Treats various types of wind-stroke tidal fever, excessive phlegm-saliva, abdominal distension, and all symptoms of Bianzheng. A larger dose moves phlegm, while a smaller dose dissolves phlegm.
Huashi (Talcum, 5 liang), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root, 4 liang), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, 1 liang, prepared with ginger), Danning (Arisaema with Gallbladder, 8 qian, processed), Qingfen (Calomel, 3 qian), Feifan (Alumen Calcined, 3 qian), Badou (Croton Seed, 2 qian, processed. This herb has the power of breaking through gates and seizing flags; its nature is fierce. Do not use lightly if unprocessed. Be cautious! Be cautious!)
Grind into powder, make pills with wheat flour paste, size of wheat grains, shaped into small cakes. Administer 20 cakes per year of age, adjusting according to size.
Wuhua Wan (Five-Color Pill): Treats all injuries in children, phlegm-saliva obstructing the chest and diaphragm causing discomfort, indigestion of milk and food, formation of accumulations and masses, hardness and pain upon pressure in the hypochondrium and abdomen; also effective for all types of wind-stroke and epilepsy.
Qing Wanzi (Green Pills):
Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), Nanxing (Arisaema, processed. Each 5 qian), Badou (Croton Seed, 5 fen, processed before use).

Hupo Baolong Wan (Amber Embrace Dragon Pill), Lijing Wan (Relieve Convulsion Pill), Lijing Dan (Relieve Convulsion Pellet), Niuhuang Wan (Calculus Bovis Pill) are all effective; choose as appropriate.
Xingxing San (Xingxing Powder): Treats fever from Bianzheng, coughing with heavy voice, as well as wind-cold coughs, and conditions resembling epidemic sand-pox and chickenpox; all can be treated with this formula.
