Why are various types of wheezing caused by heat? During the late summer when the heat is intense, breathing becomes rapid and coarse, clearly indicating that wheezing is often due to heat pathogen. The Lung governs Qi and belongs to Yang. When Yang Qi flows smoothly, it penetrates and connects the Zang-Fu organs; thus, the Lung is regarded as the "Huagai" (Canopy covering the five Zang organs), favoring clarity and emptiness while disliking stagnation and turbidity. Exhalation follows Yang going out, inhalation follows Yin entering; through this rising and falling, Yin and Yang achieve harmony. If there is obstruction, Yin cannot ascend and Yang cannot descend, leading to a disharmony of Yin and Yang, which generates urgent wheezing. Additionally, external pathogens such as Wind-Cold, Summer-Heat, and Dampness interfering with each other can all cause wheezing; moreover, emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Thought, Sadness, Fear, Fright) damaging the Zang organs can also cause wheezing. Symptoms include: mouth open for breathing, rapid breath, chest fullness, phlegm-induced wheezing, or a sound in the throat resembling a sawing motion. Although there are sixteen symptom patterns, one must investigate the root cause. If caused by Cold pathogen, dispel it; if due to Qi stagnation, regulate and smooth it; if due to Spleen-Stomach deficiency, warm and tonify it. Regarding children, there are essentially four conditions: 1) Lung affected by Cold pathogen, coughing leading to wheezing; 2) Lung Heat causing phlegm congestion and upper respiratory urgency; 3) Consumption of salty and sour foods injuring the Lung Meridian causing wheezing; 4) Post-illness Qi deficiency generating phlegm leading to wheezing, which is particularly difficult to treat. A slippery pulse with warm hands and feet indicates survival; a choppy pulse with cold extremities indicates death. If sweating is like oil, beads of sweat do not flow, and wheezing does not cease, it indicates death.
