The onset of epilepsy (Epilepsy) presents symptoms similar to convulsions, characterized by upward deviation of the eyes showing the whites, copious phlegm and saliva, loud rattling of phlegm in the throat like a sawing sound, stiffening and falling of the body, loss of consciousness, and unawareness of one's surroundings. The severity varies, but the pathology generally converges into one pattern. The etiology is broadly categorized into four syndromes: Wind (Feng), Heat (Re), Phlegm (Tan), and Fire (Huo). Attacks occur at regular intervals; distant attacks may happen once every year or half-year, while closer ones may occur once every one to two months, or even several times a month. During an attack, the patient experiences fainting and confusion, lacking awareness of their actions.
There are five names for epilepsy, each corresponding to the Five Zang Organs. Disease of the Liver Channel manifests as Dog Epilepsy (Canine Epilepsy), with a cyanotic complexion, opisthotonos, and upward eye deviation. Disease of the Heart Channel manifests as Sheep Epilepsy (Ovine Epilepsy), with a ruddy complexion, staring eyes, protruding tongue, or spitting of bloody froth. Disease of the Spleen Channel manifests as Ox Epilepsy (Bovine Epilepsy), with a sallow complexion, fixed gaze, and abdominal distension. Disease of the Lung Channel manifests as Chicken Epilepsy (Galline Epilepsy), with a pale complexion, frightened crying, opisthotonos, and hand spasms. Disease of the Kidney Channel manifests as Pig Epilepsy (Porcine Epilepsy), with a dark complexion and spitting of white foam. Additionally, Horse Epilepsy (Equine Epilepsy) also belongs to the Heart Channel. In treating this condition, one must first distinguish the sounds to determine which animal's cry it resembles and which meridian and organ it belongs to, then treat according to the specific channel.
Dog Epilepsy: On the days of the Three Fu (Sanfu), take dog teeth, grind them with water, and ingest the solution. Alternatively, use the mandible of a dog, grind into powder, and ingest.
