Mr. Sun Dongsu's mother-in-law was six months pregnant when she contracted a wind-cold, resulting in cough, pulling pain in the abdomen, phlegm obstruction causing unclear voice, and dizziness. The pulse was slippery and rapid on the left; weak at the right Cun (Cun position), slippery at the Guan (Guan position); strong at the left Chi (Chi position), and weak at the right Chi. I prescribed Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Fu Ling (Poria), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), Zi Su (Perilla Folium), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), and Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix). After four doses, the illness was cured.
Wu Dongqu, aged fifty-seven, had suffered from malaria the previous year, leading to chest fullness and distension, and significant muscle wasting. Because he had taken excessive purgative medicines, his Spleen and Stomach functions were damaged. His knees, heels, and ankles became edematous, with generalized fever, thirst, short and dark urine, yellow tongue coating, and a dry, burnt-coal-like center of the tongue. Mistakenly taking cold-natured medicines caused him to have diarrhea five or six times consecutively, unable to open his eyes, with weakness in hands and feet, and fatigue in speech. Upon examination, all six pulse positions were floating and large, but hollow upon deep pressure. He could not eat. This indicated severe deficiency of Middle Qi and impending collapse of Yuan Shen (Original Spirit), which was very alarming. I immediately prescribed Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), and wine-fried Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), decocted in water. After two consecutive doses, he could open his eyes and gradually speak. Later, Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) without Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), plus Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Bai Bian Dou (Dolichoris Semen), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Huo Xiang (Agastaches Herba), Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), and Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis) were used for regulation until recovery.
Mrs. Wu Xiyuan, due to infertility, suffered from much depression and overthinking. Her muscles gradually wasted, skin became dry and cracked, sores appeared all over her body, her body felt like it was burning, and she experienced chest and diaphragm distending pain radiating to the back, along with incessant cough. After more than ten months of treatment, everyone believed it was Zhai Ji (Consumption/Tuberculosis) and incurable. Hearing that I was at Cheng Fangtang's residence, they invited me to treat her. The pulse was slippery, large, and forceful at the right Cun and Guan, and wiry and rapid on the left. I prescribed Gua Lou Ren (Trichosanthis Semen), four qian; Luo Bo Zi (Raphani Semen), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus), and Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) as Jun (Sovereign) herbs to regulate Qi, resolve phlegm, and relieve depression; Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), Ting Li Zi (Lepidii Semen), and Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) as Chen (Minister) herbs to clear Lung Fire; Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix) as Shi (Envoy) herbs. After thirty doses, she recovered, and was subsequently regulated with Qian Jin Hua Tan Wan (Thousand Golden Phlegm-Resolving Pill). Previously, every winter she would suffer from cough, phlegm, and asthma, unable to sleep. From then on, phlegm never recurred in winter.
