Mr. Wu Xuefang had a red mass under his left hypochondrium, the size of a chicken egg, with small pustules nearby causing pain. His left pulse was wiry, large, and rapid, while his right pulse was slippery, large, and rapid. This was likely due to his lifelong preference for fried and roasted foods, which caused heat-toxin accumulation in the Liver and Gallbladder meridians (Liver and Gallbladder meridians: pathways associated with the liver and gallbladder organs). He was prescribed one large Trichosanthis Fructus (Gualou), 3 qian of Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao), and 1 qian each of Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), and Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus (Beimu). After taking three doses consecutively, the pain decreased by half. Because detoxification was timely, the hard red mass under the hypochondrium gradually dissipated, preventing the formation of a major toxic abscess. Subsequently, blood-activating and heat-clearing methods were continued. A second prescription included 3 qian of Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao), 1.5 qian of Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), 1 qian each of Lonicerae Japonicae Flos (Jinyinhua) and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), one large Trichosanthis Fructus (Gualou), 0.8 fen each of Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao) and Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhiren), and 0.5 fen each of Carthami Flos (Honghua) and Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu). After four doses, he recovered.
Wu Xiaoquan, a successful candidate in the imperial examinations, suffered from insufficient Heart Blood, phlegm in the Stomach, and deficient Yang Qi in the Lower Yuan (Lower Yuan: refers to the Kidney system and foundational vitality). His pulses in all six positions were weak, except for the slippery pulse at the Right Guan position. He was prescribed pills made from 4 liang each of Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi) and Lycii Fructus (Gouqizi); 2 liang each of Morindae Officinalis Radix (Bajitian), Cuscutae Semen (Tusizi), Psoraleae Fructus (Poguzhi/Buguzhi), and Corni Fructus (Shanzhuyu); and 1 liang each of Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Poria Cum Radix Xylomi (Baifushen), and Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen). These were processed with refined honey into pills, taken orally with light salt water on an empty stomach, 3 qian per dose. Externally/Adjunctively, Guoyang Suozhen Dan (Solidify Yang and Lock Essence Pill) was used to assist treatment. This formula consisted of 1 liang each of Dragon Tooth (Longchi) and Alpinia Oxyphylla Fructus (Yizhiren); 2 liang of Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai); and 0.5 qian each of Cinnabar (Chensha), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), and Nelumbinis Plumula (Lianhuaxin). These were bound with Euryales Semen powder paste into pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Each night, 1.5 qian was taken with Juncus effusus decoction (Dengxin Tang). It effectively secured essence.
Li Sichun suffered from distending pain in the chest and diaphragm, with purple blood stasis present in his sputum. The underlying cause was alcohol accumulation leading to stagnant fire. His pulses were short in both Cun positions, slippery in the Guan positions, and rapid in both hands. Initially, Hong Liushen Wan (Red Six Gods Pill) was administered. Subsequently, he was treated with Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhi), Coptidis Rhizoma prepared with wine (Jiu Lian), Curcumae Longae Rhizoma (Yujin), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Juhong), Poria (Fuling), Fermented Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia Qu), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Talcum (Huashi), and Perillae Fructus (Zisuzi). After taking these, the chest and diaphragm felt slightly more relaxed. Then, a pill formula was prepared using 2 liang each of Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhiren), Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus (Beimu), and Yiyuan San; 1.5 liang each of Moutan Cortex (Mudanpi), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Juhong); 1 liang of White Poria (Baifuling); 0.5 qian each of Perillae Fructus (Zisuzi), Curcumae Longae Rhizoma (Yujin), and Red Yeast Rice (Hongqu); and 3 liang of Rubiae Radix et Rhizoma (Qigen). These were bound with Medicated Leaven (Shenqu) paste into pills. Taken twice daily with plain warm water, 2 qian per dose, he recovered after conditioning.
