My cousin's wife, Cheng Shi, felt a lump-like object in her throat that could neither be coughed up nor swallowed down, causing a sensation of obstruction and unease. She also suffered from abdominal pain and diarrhea; she was fifty-eight years old at the time. This is the syndrome of *Meiheqi* (Plum-pit Qi, characterized by a foreign body sensation in the throat). The abdominal pain was a new ailment. I prescribed Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) with added Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Zisu (Perillae Folium), Guipi (Cinnamomi Cortex), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), and Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) for four doses. The abdominal pain persisted, and the diarrhea did not cease. Therefore, I switched to Weiling Tang (Stomach-Paoling Decoction) with added Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus), Sharen (Amomi Fructus), and Xiangfu for two doses. The pain stopped, and the diarrhea improved. Subsequently, I continued with Erchen Tang plus Houpo, Guipi, Zisu, Xuanfuhua, Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), and Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) decocted in water. After four doses, the throat ailment disappeared completely.
A woman first contracted wind-heat with fever and coughing for two days, then gave birth. The fever had not yet subsided when she consumed chicken broth and meat too early. Consequently, her cough and fever intensified, lasting eight days. She experienced distending pain in the chest and diaphragm, headache, thirst, constipation, black and foul-smelling sputum, scanty urine, pulling pain under the hypochondrium, rebellious qi with asthma preventing supine position (unable to lie on her left side), continuous sweating, indicating a critical condition. I prescribed Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus) 5 qian, Zisuzi (Perillae Fructus) 1 qian, Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), and Jiu Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix prepared with wine) each 6 fen, Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) each 5 fen, Fencao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle) 3 fen, and three slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). Decocted in water and drunk, the chest and diaphragm pain reduced by half, and the asthma slightly stabilized. The next day, she took the same prescription again. Her stool was guided out using honey dates (Mi Zao). The fever completely subsided, the pain entirely diminished, and all symptoms soon recovered.
My second cousin's wife had been a widow for twenty years, suffering from right-sided hemiplegia unable to move, and had not left home for three years. Now, her spirit was confused, she spoke incoherently (sleep-talking), and frequently wept bitterly. When asked about the cause, she replied that she did not know herself. Upon pulse diagnosis, both Cun (inch) pulses were short and choppy. I prescribed Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Fuling (Poria), Renshen, Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Baizhu, Da Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Wancansha (Bombyx Batryticatus), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), and Fencao. After four doses, her mental state improved compared to before, but she continued to weep as before, especially at night. I recalled that Zhang Zhongjing's Dazao Xiaomai Tang (Jujube and Wheat Decoction) was precisely indicated for this case, so I administered it immediately. After two doses, she recovered. The formula consisted of twelve large jujubes (Dazao), one he of wheat (Xiaomai), and three cun of roasted Licorice root (Gancao), decocted in water and drunk. This condition resulted from sorrow injuring the Lung organ; due to coldness in the viscera, excessive weeping occurred.
