Wang Youweng, a wealthy elder aged eighty-one, suffered from chest and diaphragm heat with fullness and obstruction, thirst, a white tongue coating like powdered starch, and coughing severe enough to prevent sleep due to fatigue and external contraction. This is Shaoyang syndrome (a pattern caused by pathogenic factors invading the Shaoyang channel). The prescription consisted of Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) 1 qian, Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus), Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam), and Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) each 8 fen, Jiu Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma processed with wine), Jiu Qin (Scutellariae Radix processed with wine), and Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix) each 7 fen, Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 4 fen, and three slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). After ingestion, he was able to sleep. However, thirst and cough persisted. Ban Xia Qu (Pinelliae Rhizoma prepared with bran) was added to the previous formula, and Er Mu Wan (Two Mother Pills, a formula containing Anemarrhenae Rhizoma and Fritillariae Bulbus) was administered at night to treat the heat-induced cough, leading to recovery.
The wife of Wang Lian’s brother had experienced prolonged menorrhagia with purple-black blood clots. Currently, she suffered from pain in the epigastrium, chest, and abdomen, swelling of the vulva, cold hands and feet, complete loss of appetite, and a hard, iron-like mass below the umbilicus and abdomen. Her pulse was rapid on the left and deep and choppy on the right, indicating Xue Jia (blood stasis forming a mass). The prescription included Tang Qiu Zi (Sugar Ball Fruit) 5 qian, Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis Rhizoma), Wu Ling Zhi (Trogopterori Faeces), Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Mai Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus), and Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) each 1 qian, decocted in water. Pain decreased by half that night, and her hands and feet gradually warmed. Subsequently, Dan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Pu Huang (Typhae Pollen), Yi Mu Cao (Leonuri Herba), and Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) were added. After four doses, pain ceased completely, and vulvar swelling subsided. After another four doses, menstruation regulated.
Madam Cheng, wife of Mr. Cheng Xiangru, was four months pregnant. She presented with headache, generalized body pain, severe lower back pain, aversion to cold and fever, cough, thirst, and floating and rapid pulses in all six positions. Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) was prescribed with Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), and Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), decocted with Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus). That night, she suddenly experienced severe chills followed by fever, and again at dawn. Seeking urgent help, I stated, "This is a sign of impending sweating." Soon after, sweat appeared; thirst, headache, and body heat diminished. Only chest and diaphragm distension remained, caused by fetal qi pressing upward, resulting in Zi Xuan (fetal suspension characterized by upper abdominal distension and pain during pregnancy). Da Zi Su Yin (Major Perilla Infusion) was administered. The formula contained Zi Su (Perillae Folium), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Da Fu Pi (Arecae Pericarpium), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), and Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba). After ingestion, she felt cold with continuous sweating, and chest/abdominal pain worsened. Du Ming Dan (Life-Saving Pill) was urgently administered. She slept peacefully. Upon waking, pain and distension resolved, she could eat, her body temperature normalized, sweating stopped, and she stabilized. Du Ming Dan consists of Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Tao Ren (Persicae Semen), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), and Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), decocted with vinegar and water, providing miraculous pain relief.
