Wang Langxiong suffered from abdominal pain and incessant vomiting. Friends in the city tried their best to treat him but failed. I took his pulse and found that the timing, volume of urination and defecation, and the speed and strength of the pulse were inconsistent, leading me to diagnose it as a case of intestinal parasites (Chong). I prescribed a decoction containing Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Binglang (Areca Seed), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) each at 1 qian, Wulingzhi (Trogopteri Dung) at 3 qian, Wu Mei (Mume Fructus) 3 pieces, and Chuanjiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) at 3 fen, boiled in water. The pain and vomiting stopped immediately upon ingestion.
Jingchuan Xiong had widespread papules and acne all over his body, which were red and itchy. Other physicians treated him with Baijili (Tribuli Fructus), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Jiuhuangqin (Scutellariae Radix processed with wine), and Gancao again, but without success. Later, attributing the condition to Wind-Heat, they administered Xuanshen, Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum), Chishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Gancao, Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shengma, Can'erzi (Xanthii Fructus), and Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus). Consequently, his appetite decreased sharply, and sores erupted all over his body, causing unbearable pain and itching. Upon taking his pulse, I found both hands exhibited Huanruo (slow and weak) pulses. I prescribed Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) with Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) removed, and added Baibiandou (Lablab Album), Sharen (Amomi Fructus), Yiren (Coicis Semen), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba), and Huangqi (Astragali Radix). After one dose, his appetite returned; after four doses, the pain and itching ceased; after ten doses, the sores and scabies shed like skin.
The wife of Cheng Yuwu was seven months pregnant when her breasts suddenly became red, swollen, and painful, accompanied by aversion to cold and fever, resulting in Neichui (Internal Blowing, a type of mastitis during pregnancy). I used Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus) at 4 qian as the Sovereign herb, Dangguiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix tail) at 2 qian as the Minister herb, Gancaojie (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma with nodes), Pugongying (Taraxaci Herba), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), and Lianqiao each at 1.2 qian as the Assistant herbs, Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) and Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) each at 0.8 fen, and Juye (Citri Reticulatae Folium) 5 leaves as the Guide herb. Boiled in water and taken for two doses, she recovered. This prescription has cured countless cases, as women often suffer from Liver Meridian disorders due to depression and anger. Therefore, Gualou and Gancao soothe the Liver; Beimu resolves stagnation; Lianqiao and Pugongying clear toxicity; Chaihu and Qingpi regulate Qi; Juye guides the medicine to the channel; and Danggui invigorates blood. With blood circulation restored, Qi regulated, toxicity resolved, and heat dispersed, swelling and pain subsided. If abscess formation is imminent, Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) can be added.
A woman surnamed Huang, young and in her first pregnancy, reached full term. Suddenly, in the middle of the night, she muttered incoherently, her eyes rolled upward, her body arched backward like a bow (Jiaogong Fanzhang), exposed herself without shame, her mouth and eyes deviated, she fell into a coma unaware of her surroundings, and could not respond to questions, terrifying her entire family. I said: This is Zixian (Eclampsia of Pregnancy) caused by Wind-Phlegm stirred by anger. It should be treated with Yunjizi Gegen Tang (Kudzu Root Decoction modified by Yunjizi) plus Dafupi (Arecae Pericarpium). One or two doses will suffice. The formula consisted of Gegen, Beimu, Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Fangfeng, Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui, Fuling (Poria), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), and Gancao each at 2 qian; Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), and Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) each at 4 qian. Boiled in water and administered, she regained consciousness.
Note: Beimu facilitates childbirth; for those not yet at term, Shengma should be used instead.
