Mrs. Shao Laiyi suffered from coughing and expectorating red sputum, sometimes resembling pus with the color of peach blossoms. She experienced slight distension and pain in the anterior and posterior chest. Her Cun (inch) pulses on both hands were surging (Hong) and slippery (Hua). This indicates that blood stasis, phlegm, and fire are stagnating in the lung qi pathways, likely developing into Lung Abscess (Fei Yong). The treatment should regulate qi, resolve phlegm, eliminate blood stasis, and clear the Lung Metal. A prescription was used containing Gardenia Fruit (Shanzhizi), Moutan Cortex (Mudanpi), Fritillaria Bulb (Beimu), Mulberry Root Bark (Sangbaipi), Red Peony Root (Chishaoyao), Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong) each at 1 qian, White Talcum (Huashi) at 3 qian, Rhizoma Imperatae (Maogen) at 5 qian, Herba Cirsii Japonici (Xiaoji) at 2 qian, Licorice Root (Gancao) at 0.5 fen, and Aurantium Fructus (Zhiqiao) at 0.8 fen. After four doses, she recovered.
Brother Cheng Xuanzu contracted Spring-Warmth disease (Chunwen) which relapsed due to improper diet. He presented with mental confusion, internal heat, thirst, a tongue coated like burnt coal, hypochondriac pain, deafness, body heat as if on fire, rigidity preventing movement, lying motionless like a corpse for ten days, and muttering in his sleep (dream talk). At that time, an epidemic was rampant in the city, and relatives and friends did not visit or congratulate. I palpated his pulse: the left side was wiry (Xuan) and rapid (Shu); the right side was surging (Hong) and large (Da) with rapidity (Shu). I prescribed Bupleurum Root (Chaihu) and Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao) each at 5 qian, Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu), and Pueraria Root (Gegen) each at 2 qian, Gardenia Fruit (Shanzhizi) and Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi) each at 3 qian, and Licorice Root (Gancao) at 0.5 fen. After three consecutive doses, there was slight sweating on the forehead, borborygmus in the abdomen, and three episodes of watery diarrhea that night, yet the fever persisted. On the next morning, upon re-palpation, the right Cun pulse was slightly softer. Ginseng Radix (Renshen) at 0.7 fen was added to the previous formula. After two more doses, sweating occurred and the fever subsided. However, rigidity, thirst, and deafness persisted; diarrhea and sweating continued unabated; limbs were cold as ice; and no food or liquid had been taken for thirteen days. Everyone considered him dead, but I could not bear to give up. I prescribed Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong), White Peony Root (Baishaoyao), and Dendrobium Stem (Shihu) each at 1 qian, Schisandra Fruit (Wuweizi) 11 grains, Angelica Sinensis Radix (Danggui) at 0.8 fen, Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) at 0.3 fen, Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai), and Licorice Root (Gancao) each at 0.5 fen. Upon subsequent examination, the left pulse had become weak. Coughing appeared, mental clarity gradually returned, he could take some porridge and drink, open his eyes, and produce voice. Diarrhea stopped, he could turn his body, and signs of life reappeared. Subsequently, Four Substance Decoction (Siwu Tang) was modified with Coix Seed (Yiren), Licorice Root (Gancao), Tangerine Peel (Chenpi), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu), Dendrobium Stem (Shihu), Lily Bulb (Baihe), and Fritillaria Bulb (Beimu). After one month of regulation, he fully recovered.
