Xu Shan's wife presented with distending pain in the chest and hypochondrium, and a sensation of stomach discomfort (zao) at dawn. Each time the sensation of stomach discomfort occurred, the pain intensified. The pulse at the left Cun and Guan positions was surging and slippery, as was the right Guan position. This indicates Liver-Gallbladder Qi stagnation transforming into fire (gan dan you yu huo) and sticky phlegm (jiao tan) in the Stomach, constituting an excess syndrome. The *Neijing* states: "When Wood is stagnant, unblock it." The nature of Wood and Fire favors free flow; therefore, one should use Longdan Xianxiong Wan (Dragon Gallbladder Eliminating Viscera Pill) to soothe and unblock. As the saying goes, "Pain results from obstruction; relief follows unblocking." After taking 1.5 qian of Longdan Xianxiong Wan, bowel movement occurred once, and the pain vanished completely. However, her voice remained hoarse. She was then treated with Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Jiuhuangqin (Scutellariae Radix processed with wine), Xiangfu (Cyperii Rhizoma), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), and Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), resulting in recovery.
A certain woman, during the summer months, suffered from difficult and painful urination, swelling of the external genitalia (yuhu), hematochezia, and fever. Her left pulse was wiry and rapid, while the right Cun pulse was short and weak. This indicates Lung Qi deficiency and excessive Liver fire. Since the Liver is the Sea of Blood and governs urination, and the external genitalia are areas connected by the Liver meridian, treatment should focus on resolving the congestion in the Liver meridian. Once Qi flows freely, new blood can return to its vessels; once heat is resolved, urination will cease to be painful, and swelling will subside. The prescription consisted of Huashi (Talcum) 3 qian, Taoren (Persicae Semen), and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) each 1 qian, Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 1 qian, Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Renshen (Ginseng Radix) each 8 fen, Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) 6 fen, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Guipi (Cinnamomi Cortex), and Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) each 3 fen. After four doses, the illness disappeared as if it had never existed.
The wife of my clan's younger brother, Dai Shi, experienced abdominal pain primarily around the umbilicus and lower abdomen, profuse leukorrhea like flowing water, soreness and pain in the four limbs, and tenesmus with stool urgency. She had developed dysentery with red and white discharge (chibai li). Palpation revealed both Cun and Guan pulses were surging and rapid, and the Chi pulse was also rapid. She was prescribed Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Binglang (Arecae Semen), Guipi (Cinnamomi Cortex), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Huashi (Talcum), Taoren (Persicae Semen), and Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix). After one dose, the bloody discharge stopped. However, she still had scanty and difficult urination, afternoon fever, and four bowel movements per day and night. The formula was changed to Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Huashi (Talcum), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Jiuhuanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma processed with wine), Jiuhuangqin (Scutellariae Radix processed with wine), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), and Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix). All symptoms resolved. Only headache and lower back pain remained. She was then given Rouguixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Jiuhuangqin (Scutellariae Radix processed with wine), Jiuhuanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma processed with wine), Pugu Zhi (Psoraleae Fructus), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), and Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) decocted and taken orally, leading to complete recovery.
