Zu Di Yingzhang experienced pain in the epigastric region directly opposite the heart, so severe that it could not be touched or approached. It was suspected to be caused by blood stasis (Yu Xue). A decoction of Yanhu (Corydalis Rhizome), Wulingzhi (Trogopterus Dung), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Huashi (Talcum), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Gancao (Licorice Root), Taoren (Persicae Semen), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), and Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizome) was prepared with water. Just before taking the medicine, a small cup of leek juice was added. That night, the pain ceased, allowing him to sleep, and his appetite returned. However, he felt a sensation of bearing down during defecation and discomfort due to pressure. This indicated that the blood stasis had moved and was attempting to descend downward. The previous prescription was modified by removing the leek juice; after one dose, he was completely recovered.
My younger brother Shunan suffered from forehead pain, generalized body pain, dry mouth, a thick yellow tongue coating, a floating and large left pulse, and rapid pulses in all six positions. At this time, which was early mid-autumn, Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) combined with Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) plus Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) was administered, but the fever did not subside. In the afternoon, Liutongshen Sanjie San (Six-Exhausting Unblocking Decoction Powder) was used, taken with scallion soup at a dosage of three qian. The fever subsided slightly, but recurred at midnight with forehead pain, particularly severe at the vertex. The root of the tongue was yellow, scorched, and blackish; urination was red, painful, and difficult; he was irritable, unable to sleep, and suffered from generalized body pain. This presented as a combination of diseases involving the three Yang meridians, specifically a summerheat syndrome. The next day, Xiao Chaihu Tang was modified with Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao) as the chief ingredient, added with Ben (likely Gaoben/Lepidii Seed or similar, text says "Ben"), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Zhuye (Bamboo Leaf), Jingmi (Rice), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), and Dazao (Jujube). Shortly after, profuse sweating occurred extending to the feet, and the fever finally subsided completely. He remained irritable and sleepless, so Xiao Chaihu Tang was again administered with Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), Shanzhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Zhuru (Bamboo Shavings), and Zhuye. His irritability settled, he fell asleep, residual heat cleared, and his spirit refreshed, leading to recovery.
A wealthy woman suffered from constipation of both stool and urine for three days during mid-autumn. A local practitioner gave her two doses of Badou Wan (Croton Seed Pills). While diarrhea ensued, urinary retention worsened. She experienced abdominal distension and oppression, with the umbilicus protruding more than two cun. Her external genitalia were swollen and cracked, preventing sitting or lying down; she wept, moaned, and desired suicide. This was diagnosed as Zhuantiao disease (retention of urine due to bladder displacement/obstruction). One cun of tree bark growing eastward, Er qian of Huashi (Talcum), Yi qian each of Xuanshusuo (Corydalis Rhizome), Taoren (Persicae Semen), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Qumai (Dianthi Herba) were decocted in water. Half a cup of leek juice was added just before ingestion. After a short while, urination began slightly. However, severe pain persisted in the Yuhu (vulva), requiring extreme straining to void. The prescription was changed to Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), and Xuanshusuo (Corydalis Rhizome) decocted, with Erythrinitrum (Xuanmingfen) mixed in at two qian. This approach aimed to raise the clear and descend the turbid. After administration, both stool and urine passed freely, relieving the distension and urgency. The following day, it was reported that abdominal pain preceded bowel and bladder movements, accompanied by pale bloody fluid and scanty urine. Two doses of Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Gancao (Licorice Root), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Xuanhu (Corydalis Rhizome), Fuling (Poria), Shanzhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus) were given, resulting in the resolution of all symptoms.
